OK these reviews are wildly inconsistent, I had to leave one of my own. Most of the negative reviews I see are about the rudeness of the staff. I mean... are seamstresses known for their bedside manner? No, they are known for their work. Kathy is of a particular personality (I happen to adore her but can completely understand how she would rub some people the wrong way). She knows what she's doing. She is talented. She gets the job done. I took my fully embellished (pearls, sequins, rhinestones, laid on delicate netting) dress to her after buying it off the rack so it was easily 6 sizes too big. I thought they would run away from a dress so complicated but she said no problem. Yes, I had to make multiple trips back to the shop - but isn't that what's expected? I would expect 3-5 visits, which is what I had to do. She is a tough cookie but my dress literally looked like it was made for my body, it fit absolutely perfectly. It was expensive, I'll admit. I expected it to be, again, let's manage our expectations here as these are designer bridal gowns guys, they are not easy. But just a fair warning, it was expensive. read more

I initially called to ask whether a dress alteration could realistically be completed within a certain timeframe. After briefly explaining the situation, I was placed on hold and another employee came on the line. When I tried to clarify the timing constraints to determine if it was even possible before making the trip, I was interrupted mid sentence and told to just come in . Despite that interaction, I still decided to come in. I currently have mild cold symptoms, so as a healthcare worker I chose to wear a mask out of consideration for others. When I arrived, one employee asked to see the dress and began discussing it, but then abruptly stopped and asked if I was sick while covering her mouth and nose with her jacket. I answered honestly that I had a common cold. Another employee then came over, and the first employee began commenting about me being sick while speaking in another language. The second employee was polite and attempted to continue helping me, but by that point I no longer felt comfortable proceeding. I completely understand people wanting to protect themselves from illness, but the interaction felt unprofessional and unnecessarily rude, especially considering I was already taking precautions by wearing a mask. Fortunately, I was able to find another alterations business willing to work with my timeline that treated me professionally and actually appreciated that I wore a mask while sick. I would recommend others choose a business with a more respectful and professional approach to customer service. read more

My experience was awful. I only went because she was recommended to me by my bridal store. I will be going to another seamstress to fix the dress. The first day I showed up she overbooked herself and I waited an hour and a half to be seen. There were 4 women all there. At the same time for wedding dress alterations. I came in with a dress they said they could alter down several sizes. They kept saying it was a "big project" and overall made me feel like a burden coming in with the dress. They did not spend a lot of time on the dress either as my understanding is that beaded wedding dresses take longer to alter. Whenever I provided feedback to make changes so the dress would fit better they would be visibly annoyed with me even though I was spending a lot of money on the alterations. At the second fitting, the dress looked frumpy on my body and there was a seam over my stomach that was causing a bunching look around my stomach and the back of the dress. The seamstress place her hand over my stomach and said, "that's it. Your belly". And proceeded to recommend shape wear several sizes smaller to fix it. They don't seem to know how to work with my body type. I'm an athletic build with an hourglass shape. I'm quite active so my belly certainly is not the issue... I have a small waist and wide hips. They NEVER made a single formal measurement of my body. They appear to eyeball what to do. Unfortunately I also gave them my second dress around the same time and it was supposed to be a simple hemline to be floor length. They made it way too short so my whole foot was showing. She just eyeballed it and marked with a marker rather than pinning... I was crying in the store because she did not execute a good job on either of my dresses. They felt bad I was crying and tried to fix it but it's still shorter, and they had me bring my dress again to try and make the dress tighter and now it bunches up even more. The only good thing they did was bring the dress in but they never got the sizing right for me and make excuses, blaming it on the dress or the brides body. They did try to make up for it, but it still did not work. Please save yourself the stress and trouble. The body shaming is inappropriate. Go elsewhere even if your bridal store recommends them. read more

I am in town visiting and needed a dress altered. I took my dress here, because I saw that it was near me and had decent reviews on Google. I brought it on a Monday and let her know that I needed it done by Friday at noon as I was going out of town. She marked the dress with blue marker and then told me it would be $120 to be taken in. I agreed to this. She told me to call Friday morning at 9 AM to see if it was finished. I called at 9AM, and it was not finished so she told me to call back again at noon. When I called back, she said it was ready. I went to pick up the dress, and I was in a hurry as I had told her that I had an event out of town and had to leave town around noon. I tried on the dress, and it was so tight I could barely exhale. It had only been 4 days since the original measurement, and I know this was not due to weight gain. I knew this was incorrect, because we had not agreed on having it be this tight when she originally measured. I specifically told her when we measured that I didn't want it too tight. When she zipped it in the shop, I had to hold the dress together bc it was so tight and wouldn't zip otherwise. Additionally, the zipper was crooked (which I didn't kno until I was home and had someone view it from the back, I asked in the shop if it was straight/correct and she said yes), the ruffles did not match up, and the seam appeared to be unraveling. She mentioned to me that whoever zipped the dress needed to be careful to not zip the ruffles, I confirmed understanding and knew my friends were more than capable of zipping correctly. I tried to discuss my concerns with her, and she continuously shut me down emphasizing that it was a really hard job, and that she shouldn't have agreed to doing it. I pushed back saying that if it was too difficult and she wasn't able to take it in, i would have preferred her not agreeing to the job. I would have been happy to pick up my untouched dress if she did not feel competent in altering correctly as I spent $300 on it originally. I decided to just pay her, and leave. She threw down the checkbook and pen on counter in frustration with me. When I got home and tried on the dress, I began crying. I knew that it was not something that I would be able to wear all night for an event and there was risk of the seams ripping as it was tight and made of chiffon. The zipper was crooked, and it squeezed me so tightly that it caused spillage over the top and squeezed my back together. Since I had to leave town, my family friend agreed to take it there. My family friend advised me that the lady was incredibly rude to her, threw the money at her, and then had the seamstress remove the zipper completely from the dress without advising my family friend that would occur. It was especially disappointing that she took the dress back and completely removed the zipper, seemed particularly spiteful to ensure the dress was unsalvageable. The only money given back was the cost of the alteration. The dress was ultimately ruined by this woman and there was no remediation provided. The dress was returned without any zipper in place, cut down the back, fabric unraveling from sewing or removal of zipper. I was so excited for this dress and was willing to pay the high alteration price so that it would not be too big. Unfortunately, I now will not be able to wear the dress at all as there is no zipper, and my event is tomorrow. The woman advised us to not write a review otherwise she would contact her attorney. I brought in a dress that was fully in tact, slightly too big around the bust and was left with an unwearable dress cut down the back with no zipper. read more

I love this place!! The whole team there is top notch. I have been a customer for 15-20 years (honestly, I've been going there so long that I don't remember how long we've been going but both my kids were little when we first visited and now they're grown and living on their own). I have sent my parents, my friends, and other relatives to Elegant Alterations and now they've all become lifelong customers, too. They always take such good care of me and mine. Whether we're needing a dress altered or cups put in, or uniform skirts shortened, a hem for jeans adjusted, or a prom dress tightened--or doing a quick, last minute hem fix before a big trip--they've always had my back. I felt the need to write the following review to help others not have the same experience.... I have used Kathy for my alterations for several years. She did good work on my alterations, and I exclusively used her. In recent months I took several pieces that needed altered to Kathy, and every single item was incorrectly sewed. I had to take all of the pieces to another alternations business to be corrected. Prior to paying Kathy at Elegant Alterations for the items she altered, I pointed out my concern with each item she sewed. She simply told me they each were altered well, and implied I should agree with her and just pay for services rendered. She did not offer to fix any of the items. Upon taking all pieces with defective sewing to another alteration business, I was told by the owner that none of the items Kathy altered for me could be worn. She said they were not altered correctly, and did not look well made now. One of the items Kathy messed up cost $300, and the second alteration lady resewed the item and it looked factory sewn once she was finished. I have spent a lot of money in Kathy's business in the last few months, and then had to take all pieces to another alternations business to be sewed correctly. One pair of pants was not salvageable, because the waist was sewn way tighter than we agreed and I could not even button them. I cannot recommend Kathy or her other seamstress. She is very unprofessional, and is often unable to find your clothes when you pick up. She has even been known to lose clothing. The store owner is extremely rude. Also very unorganized as I came to pick up items for a friend and when I told her the name for the items she asks me to describe them instead. She looked through racks of clothes and came back several times questioning me if I was sure about the descriptions. I have never written a formal review on a business, however, this experience warrants one. I hope this discourages every single person that reads this from visiting Elegant Alterations and Kathy (store owner). I was referred to Elegant Alteration by my fiance to have a sports coat altered ahead of our wedding. On the first visit, I tried on my jacket for Kathy and we walked through the alterations I was requesting (shirt cuff and sides of jacket). I thought it was odd that she only pinned the back of my jacket to fit and did not pin the fabric at the shirt cuff. She assured me she has been doing this 30+ years and knows how to tailor a male jacket. My fiance picked up and paid for my jacket the following week. Upon trying it on at home, I found the sleeves were too short and the sides had been taken in far too much. We then called Kathy to schedule a visit the next day. When we arrived at Elegant Alterations, we were met with irritation and blatant disrespect. She saw no problem with the way the jacket fit. She mentioned her infamous phrase, "this is the way I've been doing it for 30+ years." What she failed to realize is I, as the paying customer, was not happy with the fit. I asked her to let the sleeve out to the length we had previously agreed upon and let the sides of the jacket out enough so that it did not rip at the in-seam. After initial refusal, she reluctantly agreed to perform these alterations. I again asked if she needed to measure or mark the jacket so that she knew how much to let out. Kathy, in all her glory, was adamant that she knows what she's doing. 4 weeks after my initial visit to Elegant Alterations, I picked up my jacket for the 2nd time. Kathy directed me to where my jacket was located. She said I could try it on, but that she would not be making any changes to her work. When I tried the jacket on, I quickly realized she had let everything out to the retail length. The jacket fit the exact same way it did when I brought it in the first time. When expressing this concern, she mentioned that my jacket was costing her time that she isn't getting paid for. She refused to alter the jacket anymore and would not refund my $130 payment. The same day I took the sport coat to a second business for alterations. They confirmed my speculation, in that the sides of the jacket were returned to manufacture fit. However, the sleeves were let out a button size longer than manufacture fit. They offered to expedite my alterations so that the jacket would be available for the wedding. In summary, Kathy charged me for services that were not rendered. She would not acknowledge that a paying customer was dissatisfied with the end results of her product. Kathy refused to further alter my jacket to meet the agreed upon fit and refused to issue me a refund. The end product I received from Elegant Alterations was a jacket with the sleeves a button size longer than standard and no adjustments made to the sides of the jacket. Take this as your warning... stay FAR away! read more

Kathy has a very direct way of speaking so I can understand why some people might have taken things the wrong way (per other reviews that made me hesitant about trying it out at first)...I don't think it's intentional. She gets straight to the point and I can appreciate that. I'm a bit blown away at the work that was completed here. I was told they do the best work for leather, but I knew that the jacket I needed fixing was going to be hard to do because of the material, and the damage. I bought a nice jacket at Zara, and on my first day wearing it, a friend's dog jumped up on me and snagged a hole in it. I was not sure what to do, honestly, because it was a tear in leather. It's not the easiest of materials to fix, and I didn't want to go somewhere and have them put a random patch over it damage, because I thought that would draw more attention than the actual tear. I took it in, where i was told the leather seamstress is the best in town, and i will have to say, that I believe this statement. They were able to create a pattern with some leather that matched the leather on my jacket, and create a the same design on the opposite panel as well to create a symmetrical pattern that works with the jacket. I will definitely be taking all my future alteration needs to this company. read more

Believe me, there is not one "elegant" thing about Elegant Alterations. Kathy RUINED, butchered, ripped and destroyed, my wedding dress. I went in 4 times and I swear each time it was more unrecognizable. She charged me nearly $500 and didn't even finish her job (Although she thought it was finished.) Which is absolutely crazy. She also told me while I was trying it on "I swear I will kill myself if you gain any weight" -- SO unbelievably rude. I had to take it somewhere else to see if it was even salvageable and even the new seamstress was appalled by what Kathy had done to it. She just kept saying "shameful... she should be ashamed" SO- DO NOT put your wedding dress in her hands or anywhere near them. I'm WARNING you!!!!! Kathy worked serious magic to alter my wedding dress with little time to spare. My first wedding dress was damaged beyond repair by a different seamstress. When I got my second dress in, the wedding dress shop knew that Kathy was the woman for the job and referred me to her. I now know why! Kathy altered the hem, waist, bust, sewed in cups, and created a bustle for my wedding dress - all in about a week's time. She was professional, listened to my thoughts and fears through the process, and delivered the dress in great condition much faster than I could have imagined. I went to see Kathy with my sister for her wedding dress alterations. Kathy was funny, inviting, and generous with her services. My sister was worried about her weight fluctuating so close to her wedding date. Kathy was altering her dress up until 3 days before the wedding to make sure it was the perfect fit for Kaileen's special day. Prom dress. Basic alterations to length, take in bodice and shorten shoulder straps. They had the dress for two months. They did not work on the poor fit of the bodice and said it looked fine. They said that we could pad the chest area but not make it fit correctly any other way. The sides of the dress puckered out under the arms and they didn't see a problem with that either. (It was all just big.) They had shortened the shoulder straps but the stitching was poorly done. Almost $200 and I had to take it somewhere else (to a real professional) to be reworked. Thank goodness they did not completely ruin the dress or I would have been buying another two weeks before prom. Ridiculous. I called the boutique where the dress was purchased and they informed me that they had stopped recommending Elegant Alterations and offered to help with a new dress if I could not salvage the original. Kathy is a phenomenal seamstress. She was really nice to work with and able to get the job done in a matter of days. I am getting married in 2 weeks and I connected her week 3 with a request for alterations to my wedding dress. She immediately asked to schedule an appointment for me to come back within the week. Upon my arrival, she immediately went to work. Asked me to change and try on the dress. She made her marks with pins and made sure I was happy with the look and feel of the dress. Again, we are 3 weeks from my wedding. She then asked for my shoes, which I did not have at the time. Later that week I came back with my shoes to measure for the hem. Only 3-4 days later we had an appointment to come in for the final fitting. THE DRESS FIT ME LIKE A GLOVE! It was more than what I could have asked for and it made me the happiest. I felt beautiful in every way. She really worked some magic. I was concerned I would have to wear a bra with the dress, but leave it to Kathy, she was able to make the dress fit me like it was made for me. I haven't even touched on how seamless the alternations look. You cant even tell she did anything to it. That is how PHENOMENAL her work is! Unfortunately, Kathy's experience and talent does NOT outweigh her ability to listen to what the customer wants. I have witnessed her rudeness and eye rolling about certain customers to other customers in the same room. she altered my niece's wedding dress and did a good job... but Kathy is only going to alter the way SHE wants to alter. I brought her a $700 gown to wear to an award show for film and television. I was very clear that I wanted the length to be cut in front ONLY! It was important that it have a long train so that it looked like a ball gown and not a prom dress. I was very clear! She even argued with me about it, but in the end, she took zero notes, and cut off all of the back the exact same length as the front. Then had the nerve to charge me the "wedding dress price" of $200 for simply cutting the tulle off. I said, "That's crazy!" Then she said, "Fine! $150.". So, basically she ruined a $700 gown and I paid her $150. I've never met a more stubborn, rude alterations seamstress in my life! And I worked in Hollywood for 30 years! She's too busy, overworked, tired, doesn't take notes and doesn't have enough staff to help her finish work accurately or in a timely manner. This makes for a miserable experience. read more

I had a really great experience here! I live in Jackson, MS, and had a negative experience with a seamstress in that area who told me that something was wrong with my wedding dress and that it couldn't be fixed. My fiancé and I were already in Nashville for the weekend, and in desperation I called Kathy to see if she could fit me in. Even though this was super last minute and I did not have an appointment, she allowed me to come by (and even stayed past closing hours) to talk to me about what needed to be altered. I just returned to Nashville yesterday for the follow-up fitting and the dress fit perfectly! She tweaked one final thing while I waited there so that I wouldn't have to drive to Nashville again. I also thought that what she charged me for all of the work that had to get done was very reasonable and well with my alterations budget. I would highly recommend this business! read more

Jenny rescued my wedding dress & made it perfect after a far less skilled seamstress attempted to alter it. it was an absolute disaster when i brought it in & out of sheer panic, i overnighted 3 more wedding dresses because i thought my dress was butchered so much that it was too far gone. As soon as i called Cathy, she worked me in within a couple of days- the dress was ready for me in less than a week! Jenny essentially remade the whole thing, cutting off the beautiful lace sleeves to add lace she'd taken from the hem to add to the shoulders (the first hack job cut at least 6" from each shoulder which made the bodice incredibly tight & cut me in half). They work magic here- they are fun to work with & Jenny is the kindest & most encouraging woman. She made everything less stressful & her work is second to none. I will never take an important item of clothing anywhere else. highly recommended!! read more

I can't say enough great things about the alterations I received from this place!! I bought my wedding dress from Anthropologie's BHLDN line and had no clue where to take it after I moved to Nashville. This place did an amazing job, including giving the back of my dress a deeper V even with all the beading the dress had. Story highlights because this one is long: "Her dress was not good taste." "Your dress looks better than that other bride." "You stand too comfortable. You should suck in more." "You're going to fall on your face at your reception." "You're a waste of my time." I went to Elegant Alterations yesterday to get an estimate on alterations to my wedding gown. The dress itself was just under $4000. With that in mind, I wanted the alterations to be done well, but also still be affordable since I spent most of my budget on the dress itself. I told Cathy beforehand on the phone that I wanted an estimate on my dress alterations, and she said to come by anytime after 4:45. I show up at 5 because I had trouble finding the place, and she is passive aggressive to me about being late. I just shake it off because she's right, I was later. Next, she tells me to put on the dress. When I come out, she starts comparing my dress to the girl who had been there when I came in (who I knew from college, but hadn't mentioned that yet) and saying mine was better and hers was ugly with no taste. I tell her that both are great, just different! I said her dress fits her personality well and she seemed to like it. She rolls her eyes. Next, when she is pinning my dress, she tells me she needs to hem the back part of the underlining, and I tell her that isn't necessary because I am on a budget, and that part won't matter for how I have my reception planned. She continues to try to bully me into hemming the dress her way by saying, "when you fall on your face at your reception, you'll think of me and know I was right." Still I don't budge. Next, when I'm standing waiting for her to get something, she tells me I'm "standing too comfortable" and motions to my stomach sticking out. She goes on to tell me that I need to suck my stomach in all day on my wedding day because it's worth it on a special day. Cute. She also quotes me on $35 per bustle, and insists there needs to be 3, which I now see from other past reviews that she was charging me $15 more than other people. At this point, I think she realizes that I don't have endless money to burn because I keep insisting on budget-friendly alterations due to the dress already fitting me so well (it fits like a frickin glove, it just needs a hem and bustle). Because she sees I have a price limit, she starts getting more aggressive and dismissive with my feedback and reminding me of all the more wealthy people she's done dresses for *name drops specific Beaman family members(who I also know and went to college with so that was uncomfortable again)*. At this point, I've been there over an hour (15 min of which she spent talking about other people's gowns and personal lives that I quite frankly don't care about at all and it's not my business who got a divorce), so I say I need to go and I'll compare prices elsewhere and get back to her. She freezes and acts surprised that I'm taking n my dresses with me. I remind her that I told her on the phone that I was just getting a price estimate, and she responds by saying "lots of brides call me, that's not my fault." Got a pen? Write it down. That's what our appointment was for, and I was clear about that. Next, she starts berating me about how I had "wasted her time" and she kept repeating "MY time is money." I say, "I'm sorry if there was a misunderstanding, but I was clear on the phone about what I wanted." So she starts trying to bully me (again) into leaving my dress there, saying all her pins and markings are already on my dress, and her pins "are her money." I tell her I'm sorry she feels that way, but I'm taking my dress with me, and pick out the closest pins to me and reach to hand them to her. She doesn't even look at me and gestures for me to put them in the container at her feet. I genuinely didn't understand so I said, "do you want these back?" And she nudges the container at her feet towards me, while I'm still in my fitted gown and covered in open pins. So I scrunch down, put them in the container and go change. When I come out, she tells me to hang up the dress so she can check for any more pins, and begins angrily erasing the markings she made with a wet rag. She does this for a long time in silence and very aggressively on my dress to make a show of how inconvenient I was to her, and I just stood there in silence and watched. I won't apologize for something I didn't do wrong and isn't my fault. I was clear on the phone, and she had been disorganized, rude, shamed my body, and talked crap about other women that weren't there to defend themselves. I respect strong women, especially business owners. However, I will not give my business to anyone who body-shames women, gossips to strangers about private business, bullies to get their way, is elitist about their clientele, or is just overall unkind. I'm done bringing my business here. For ages, I thought I was doing something wrong to get such a rude reception each time, but I've come to realize that it doesn't matter how nice I am or how I try to communicate - the woman in charge obviously feels that she has enough business to treat her clients with contempt. She makes up prices on the spot that seemed high to me each time, but I paid them since the alterations were decent (not spectacular) and was trying to be friendly. Not recommended. read more

Kathy was AMAZING. I was a very picky bride who had to come back a few times and she was always welcoming and always fixed it. She did a wonderful job on the zipper portion of my dress And the hem.
