I had a burrito craving so checked LA Taco for the nearest recommendation. I arrived around 1pm on a Saturday and the patio was nearly full - good sign! They do Cochinita Pibil, which I just recently discovered and love so I ordered that in my burrito. She told me there would be a bit of a wait for my food so I hung out waiting maybe 15 minutes - they were busy with numerous dine-in and takeout orders. My burrito was well worth the wait, juicy, tangy, delicious. I'll be back for sure. They had pretty loud music playing, which made for a good vibe but made listening out for my name to be called a little harder. If you have hearing aids the noise level might be a challenge here. read more

Hey Fam, Check out this small Mexican Restaurant. Only a few seats outside or just take out. There is a cute liquor store behind that has great selection of canned cocktails or wine. The Chicken Taquitos were really good and so was The El Zarape burrito which is a Cali Burrito with Fries inside. Also the Mole Quesadilla was amazing! I started following this guy on TikTok who travels all throughout the US trying these amazing hole in the wall gems. El Zarape caught my attention because the food looked absolutely mouthwatering. Nik Metcalfe this was absolutely delicious. Well worth the drive from Long Beach to Los Angeles. To start the chips and salsa was fresh and tasty. The sweet lady at the counter guided us along as We explained that we were in town from Dallas and had this scheduled for a week. The salsa, one a little spicy and the other a verde like sauce was delicious. Thoroughly enjoyed both. The crunchy Tacos dipped in Birria juices were soooo good. oh my god no. I already kind of knew this, but decided to try again anyway bc not much was open. first off my order was very wrong. not going to go into all of that but the shrimp in my burrito needed to be fished out as it was overcooked and very low quality. it was giving cup o noodles shrimp. and smelled AWFUL. it was giving microwave. i'm about to dry heave thinking about it. it was BAD BAD. the enchiladas were also inedible. as was the salsa...... Needed to grab something to eat before seeing Poetry for the People at the Fountain Theater and El Zarape's patio turned out to a great choice on a warm day. There was a bit of people watching too.. maybe because of the liquor shop next door. Easy ordering at the window, there were printed pamphlet menus, a posted menu, and some specials - so be sure to look through it all. J ordered a bacon breakfast burrito and a cafe de olla (in case of mild food coma ha) and I ordered taquitos dorados with chicken. Everything was served fresh and hot, but the service is not quick. The food was served with care, on lovely plates and with garnishes. Although we were on a slight time crunch, the presentation even being just a patio spot was so nice the we had to sit and enjoy it. With the taquitos I especially loved that you could taste the oregano in the chicken and the fresh lettuce to cool everything down. I had a couple bites of the breakfast burrito and the salsa verde added some nice tangy light spice on the savory bacon, potatoes, and eggs. We enjoyed our quick lunch! read more

A cute authentic Mex food place tucked east past downtown! I used to come here more when I lived here, but was glad food was still really good and the people here were awesome still! Carne asada here is so so so good and is definitely the main thing to recommend when eating here. The best shrimp burrito I've had in a long time. They pack the burrito with huge shrimp and it's so filling and yummy. I live nearby in east hollywood and try to come here every few weeks. Service is friendly and quick. Their red salsa is soo spicy and absolutely fantastic. Parking is limited and shared with the liquor store, which is super convenient to grab your beers. read more

With so many Mexican restaurants to choose from in and around the Los Angeles metro area, El Zarape should get your attention when you're craving fresh ceviche, burritos, asada fries, quesabirria tacos and mole! I noticed that the menu lists chips and guacamole under "Sides," so I ordered just the guacamole. However, when I went to pick it up, the cashier denied me the chips. I wasn't asking for free chips; I simply expected them to come with my order as indicated. Friends and I needed something to eat while visiting a friend at a nearby hospital. I absolutely love Mexican food and this place reminds me of when I first fell in love with it. What is especially unusual, is that I first found out I enjoyed the food after trying a vegetarian dish. My health fanatic friend had me questioning my food choices so I said why not. It was a Mexican bowl with zucchini, yes zucchini. It was very flavorful especially with the beans, guacamole and rice. That was an unexpected surprise. My husband always orders the huevos rancheros with a cucumber lime drink, and I usually get the huevos con chorizo with a tall glass of Coke. Everything is consistently delicious, especially their salsa and chips which are honestly some of the best. Seating is never an issue, and the staff is always friendly and welcoming. But everytime I come back to el zarape and I get my usual Surf & turf burrito (no beans) but if you like beans then keep it the way it's comes. That Burrito and everything else these amazing people that work and cook at El zarape make, puts the biggest smile on my face. And they are super friendly and great people. Stopped by for a quick lunch today and couldn't decide on what to order, I ended up ordering the quesabirria tacos however in all my excitement I think the staff misunderstood my order and charged for a birria quesadilla. When I got my order I realized it was wrong but I didn't want to have the staff remake the order (they were so kind and willing to but it was not necessary) and it was honestly so much more food than I was expecting. The staff so kindly offered me a quesabirria taco to accommodate for the misunderstanding, I was not expecting this at all but this speaks so highly of their customer service. I've passed this place without going in for like 15 years but today i finally decided to try it out. This place isn't really your normal taco joint in that they don't automatically give you radishes and chilies etc. But the Taste is impressive. I had the carne asada tacos. The portions aren't huge at all but I think it's just enough. The red sauce is pretty spicy, don't get into it if you can't handle heat. If you can, I'd recommend because the flavors are there. Definitely a hole-in-the-wall type of place, serving up quick Mexican eats. The term "you get what you pay for" applies here, especially the ceviche. I orderd both the fish and shrimp ceviche and they tasted the same. The ceviche was pre-made and didn't taste fresh at all, and it was SO SALTY. There was barely any fish in there; mostly tomato and onion. The shrimp quesadilla and shrimp taco were not bad, though. The shrimp tacos were tasty, but tiny, definitely more of an appetizer. Their chips were really good and the creamy orange sauce was good as well. I ate the majority of the chips dipping them into that. The service was quick, but I was also the only person there, aside from the man who ordered before me. One of the guys wiped some tables down while I was there, so it's nice to know they keep them clean. They have a tiny parking lot (literally tiny, two parking spots) but I'm not sure if that belongs to them or the store behind them. There is free street parking, however, you just may need to walk a block or so. This cozy taco stand is open late night in East Hollywood. We ordered shrimp tacos, pollo asado fries, a carne asada torta and an horchata. The tacos were pretty good. My only complaint is that the shrimp in the shrimp tacos might not have been seasoned. This wasn't a big issue because the toppings on the taco really came together. A little seasoning would have been the extra kick to make the taco perfect. Food is reasonably priced and service is fairly quick. This place has a window to place your orders and pick up food.
