Based on a little pre-trip research, 1862 Dry Bar was on my must-do list for a recent business trip…read moreto Madrid. I visited on a rainy Thursday night so there wasn't a large crowd and I grabbed an open seat at the end of the bar. A friendly gentleman gave me a menu and asked what I was interested in. When I mentioned the Old Fashioned, he advised that it was an Amaro-based version without the usual bourbon/whiskey spirit. I noticed a Brooklyn and commented that I sometimes made those at home. Very politely he noted that if I was making them in the US, it wasn't with Amer Picon, which isn't available in the US. He's right. So an actual, real Brooklyn it would be! I thoroughly enjoyed the Brooklyn. I also enjoyed some brief conversation with the bartender who was very good. The kind who uses the spoon or straw to taste each drink to ensure it was made properly. As I was paying my bill and mentioning to the gentleman who initially greeted me that I wanted to bring my business partners here later in the week, he wrote his phone number on a business card and told me to call him in advance as the bar got very busy when it wasn't raining. Turns out, this friendly man is Alberto the owner! Guess I didn't do quite as much research as I could have! I regret we weren't able to make a second visit to 1862 Dry Bar on this particular trip, but it is going to be my first stop next time I'm back in Madrid. Great vibe, excellent staff and a classy and friendly owner.

Best dinner in Madrid! Everything was just perfect for our recent dinner at Flavia. Before going…read morewe knew they had a Gluten Free menu but didn't realize just how seriously they take allergies. Waitress was fabulous! She asked about allergens while taking our drink order. Made great suggestions for Italian wine and beer. When she brought a tasting plate with mortadella and a bread basket she pointed out to our celiac son that his GF bread was on the way - and wow! He was so impressed with his own warm HF baguette (separate packing clearly showed it was GF) Basically the entire Italian menu has available GF options which made dining a delight for my son (probably over ordered for himself but had snack for the next day!). Delicious pastas (bolognese was so tasty!) and pizzas (crisp and chewy crusts on both regular and GF). Every part of our evening was delightful.

Spain has the best GF bread; not sure why other countries can't replicate the breads. From the bread, to the pasta, to the soups, I just can't say enough good things. The majority of the menu is GF. The ambiance, the staff, the location are all perfect, and I have mentioned the food? I traveled with a pescatarian and a non-foodie, and we all loved every bite of every dish. Flavia deserves all the Michelin Stars and more. You should definitely experience it for yourself. #1sassytravler #flavia

Finally, an Irish pub in Madrid that isn't a Spanish restaurant cloaked in an Irish façade. This…read moremight be the most legit Irish place in Madrid, serving dishes such as Sheppard's Pie, Guinness Stew, fish and chips and different types of beer. Now, that's not to say that they don't try to throw some Spanish flair in there too because they do. The food is delicious and always served as a full portion. I've never left feeling that I needed more or that I didn't get enough. I have had the Guinness Stew twice now and each time it's been consistently scrumptious. My wife had the fish and chips, which is enough to satisfy any hunger. The mixed drinks are very delicious. We had a Long Island and a mojito. Both were tasty and perfectly balanced. The service is fast and prompt; they even speak English and have an English menu, which is a nice relief at restaurants in Spain. I personally suggest you sit outside under the canopy of bright green trees. While you dine, you'll be sandwiched between two beautiful and iconic glorietas, the Fuente de Cibeles and the Puerta de Alcalá. This place is great and I'll definitely be back again and again. The price is very reasonable and competitive. It's also a great place to take visitors who might not be ready for, interested in, or who are tired of jamón, strong cheese, and other Spanish food items. Go and have a great time. Btw, the Leffe beer is my favorite, if you're taking suggestions. Enjoy!
