This is my family's favorite Mexican place in Monroe as we've been going there for years for cinco de Mayo (which is also my sister's bday). I haven't been in a few years since I live out of town so it was nice to come back. I didn't recall them have the best salsa!! So great, could have filled up on chips and salsa which were delivered promptly. The service was great as well as the jumbo marg, huge and tasty. All the food was very tasty and lots of great Mexican flavor in every bite. My only feedback was the nachos supreme was a little underwhelming in size and protein/toppings compared to other restaurants (not only Mexican style: everyone who follows me know my extensive experience with nachos). Adding on extra salsa though helped fill any voids. But still overall the ambiance, drinks, food and service will definitely continue to bring us back! Definitely check this place out. read more

I eat here every 2-3 weeks. Staff is friendly, no wait time what-so-ever, and the food has always been full of flavor and never disappoints me. Only con is the price, my fiancée and I go here and usually it evens out to about $70. 10/10 would recommend this place to anyone wanting to experience authentic Mexican food. read more

Thankfully, in their menu they had a vegetarian section. I was stuck between the Burrito Zacatecas because it had mashed potatoes in it and the Burrito Grande Vegetariano because according to the waitress it was bigger. So I asked if they could put the mashed potatoes in the Burrito Grande Vegetariano, the waitress said yes. I was disappointed at the size of my burrito. It did not look like a Grande-size burrito. It looked like a mediocre burrito. I honestly think they just gave me the Burrito Zacateca instead. I was disappointed in both the size and taste of the burrito and the rice was dry and chewy. Both rice and beans were ordinary and definitely was not worth the cost of the dish. Left me feel lacking and I had to eat more chips to fill me up. Upon receiving a second helping of salsa for my chips, my friend and I noticed a stringy white hair a substance sticking out of my salsa. Eyew. I really wanted to like this place, but the food spoke for itself...and it definitely was not worth the price they were charge while lacking in portion and quality. It's a shame. read more

Hostess was rude seemed that she was upset to set up for 13 people when the place was empty, I can see why!! Felt very uncomfortable there since we walked in no one was friendly...Vibe was totally off. Portions were small. Their fountain drinks were even bad! Food seemed reheated and not fresh. Having a good friend in Monroe means exploring the culinary offerings from time to time available. El Vaquero has come to be a regular in our restaurant rotation because of their consistency and general deliciousness. Daily drink specials (think jumbo margarita for $9 special) also never hurt anyone either. In my delving into the menu, I usually either order the spinach enchiladas or the mushroom quesadilla, which is on the a la carte menu on the back. I also have had them do the mushroom quesadilla in the choose your own combo platter on the back too. There's something just perfect about their sautéed shrooms and the crispy tortilla and gooey cheese. The guacamole is also served in an edible tortilla bowl and is simple but pleasant. As someone not fond of crazy inclusions in guac, it's right up my ally. Salsa is served in personal ramekins which is also nice so you can double or triple dip to your hearts content. Service has always been friendly and prompt--even with a line to be sat. There is an outside patio and bar as other dining options. I would highly recommend El Vaquero to anyone in search of solid Tex-Mex in Monroe! read more

We enjoy El Vaquero quite a bit. We keep going back. They have plenty of dishes that aren't the standard tex-mex fair. They seem to have lots of family recipes, which is great. Well it was my first time out in a year to eat so I decided to try this place. They did follow social distancing which I appreciated. Once I sat down they took my order and didn't take long to get my meal. I took my first bite and glanced up at the ceiling to find their air vents pitch black with hanging mold. If I could give this zero stars I would. My sister lives near this restaurant and the last two times we ate there Terrible things happened. First time I was charged for something that had nothing to do with my order. We had four different waiters. No one seem to know what the other staff had done. Second time was just a few days ago. The waiter took our order, and he should have asked what sized margarita we wanted. Because we have eaten here before we know that a large margarita has the same or nearly the same amount of alcohol as a small one Nonetheless, he up sold us. First time here and won't be the last!! I was not very hungry so I ordered a taco and refried beans. It was good...I have had better, I have had worse. Next time I will explore the menu more. The big surprise - what my hubby ordered! It was called Molcajete and I took a pic of it. It came out in this very hot stone and had a few different meats and veggies. Ordered take out. The meal was ready 15 minutes after saw stated when I ordered. Ordered two meals, got one little salsa container. When I asked for more, got one more, and then the rude manager lectured me that I could only have two. I have been to hundreds of mexican restaurants and never have I been told I could not get more salsa. Anyway the salsa was horrible, as was the rest of the food. The tostada was soggy, the cheese enchiladas were cold and the enchilada sauce was like some weird marinara sauce. My recommendation is to stay away. Lousy mexican food, rude management. read more

Tonight was only our second time trying this place. First time was better than "meh" and with the lack of good Mexican food in the area, we decided to try again with a carry out order. The food was simply awful. The tacos were soggy and had ingredients on it that we requested be left off. The meat had absolutely no flavor. The same with the rice and beans. The cheese enchiladas had no cheese in them! I ordered the Steak El Cuatrero- the shrimp was decent but the steak was dry and cold with congealed cheese. The dogs liked it. The salsa is decent. That's about it. We ordered online with a 6:30pm pick up and arrived at 6:25pm. It was ready but everything was cold and soggy. Definitely will not return. The wife and I stopped in for our first (and last) visit on Saturday. The place was really really noisy, may have been due to the family of 15+ who were celebrating a birthday, seated at a row of tables, pulled together, down the middle of the restaurant, and they were really loud. My wife ordered the fish tacos, with refried beans and rice, I ordered the steak taco's  with the refried beans and the rice, we both had water to drink. It would take to long to describe just how AWFUL these two meals were. I still shudder at the thought of them. I am not sure how this place has received any stars above one or two in any of the other reviews. About the only thing that was decent was the water, everything else that was put on our table was gawd awful. If you have any kind of palate at all you will steer clear of this "Mexican restaurant".   A one star rating is at least one star to many. read more

Absolutely Love this place . One of my favorites. This is definitely a Mexican restaurant, so if you like Mexican you came to the right place. If not, this is not the place for you. The wait staff is very friendly. The service is great! Doesn't take long for your orders to be served. This might vary depending on how busy it is when you go, but I've always had very fast service. The menu here is 98% Mexican, but plenty of meal choices. Not really a kids menu, but our kids loved the unlimited free chips & salsa. I love their spicy salsa. I highly recommend (its the green colored salsa). Just ask for the hot salsa. You'll be glad you did if you like spicy stuff. The meal prices are very affordable. All under $20. I strongly recommend the Molcajete Ranchero served on volcanic rock. This is my wife's favorite dish. There is an outdoor patio option for those warm sunny days , so you can enjoy your food and the weather outside if that is your preference. There is also a small bar with a decent TV with sports on . The wait staff will generally put on whatever you want to watch on the TV. There is not a lot of TV's however. If you like Mexican food for an affordable price, this is a must try if you are in the area. You'll thank me later. read more

This was my second lunch visit. You can't beat the value of their lunch specials! They are $4.99. They offer 5-6 different specials till 2pm at lunch. I had the Taco Salad with beef ( it is also offered with chicken) and it was delicious. A couple of my dining companions had the chicken version and they were very pleased and said it was good with plenty of chicken. They also offer '$2.99 margaritas. I had one on the rocks and it was an average margarita, really nothing special. We also ordered the fresh made guacamole for $5.99. That was OUTSTANDING! Fresh (made to order), very tasty, and plenty for folks to share. Everyone at my table enjoyed the guacamole. We plan on returning soon for another group lunch. read more

We had a wonderful lunch at Vaquero's today, probably the best guacamole I've ever had. It was a very fresh bright green with lots of onion and cilantro. The fajita del mar was also excellent, with perfectly grilled scallops, shrimp, tomatoes, peppers and onions. It came with an option of refried or pinto beans, shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes and onions and spanish rice. To top it off, we had fried ice cream with chocolate sauce served in a tortilla shell and crowned with lots of whipped cream! Service was quick and attentive, while we were there someone was softly playing guitar. You can eat inside or opt for patio seating, which offers a fine view of Meijer's.
