If you want authentic Mexican food there are a handful of places in Amarillo but el tejavan is one of the best

Great "real" Mexican food! The asada tacos are killer! Nice place for a date.

I eat here 2 or 3 times a week. Guacamole is good, the ceviche appetizer is very clean and crisp. Great service and clean restaurant, everything is always great. I could eat the Cabrito or Menudo every day, easily in my top ten. read more

Beef fajitas were surprisingly good. Table sals was quite spicy. Table corn chips were excellent. Freshly made corn tortillas really among the best I've had. Gorditas were very good. Happy hour 2$ margaritas were poor, but the classic Texas Rita was fine. Great food overall. Lots of screening babies, but hey new parents deserve a tex-mex too. read more

The best authentic Mexican food in Amarillo. My kids live in Dallas and ask me to bring the homemade corn tortillas when I visit. I've never been disappointed in the food or the service or the cleanliness of the restaurant. We order the tomatillo sauce by the quart to take home with us. It's a must try! read more

We eat here every time we're in town. Mostly because the prices aren't too bad & the food is delish. I love the horchata & barbacoa tacos. I love the chips & salsa & we just tried the chunky guacamole today which was so good! I love the cilantro they put in it! My husband, a Hispanic, who knows the difference between real from the fake mexican food--- loves the food. We'll be back & I hope to try some different items on the menu. read more

Recommended by Pastor Bo. We enjoyed dinner immensely. I had the Plato El Pastor and Cat had the Chicken Quesadillas. Restaurant was clean and the staff quite friendly. Location is easy enough-right off of I40. About $43, so it wasn't the cheapest but we bought a frozen margarita and a large Dos XX to go along with it. We would go back! read more

Worst service ever. We saw the waitress twice first time was to get our order second was to bring our food. Had to get up and ask a different waitress for refills which took about 10 minute to get after asking. Than we told me sorry we have a big table over there and we are getting ready for a wedding. I don't care if you have a big table or a wedding I care about getting my food and my order. Would not recommend. Food is not the best. read more

Just when I think this place can't get any better, it does! Still spotless, excellent service, and they've added items to the menu that are to die for. Can't beat homemade tortillas and salsa made fresh daily either. And the guacamole, holy guacamole. It is by far the best I've ever eaten, and since eating is my hobby, it rocks! No tex-mex here by any means. WOW is all I've got to say. Wow. We've got to stop eating there 3x a week; otherwise, the better half and I are going to have to by a bigger vehicle...lol. Here's a case where I'd like to give 3.5 stars. El Tejavan is quite solid for Tex-Mex. But four stars to me suggests more enthusiasm than I have for it. With that said, when passing through Amarillo, I usually stop here for lunch or supper, and it doesn't disappoint. Travelers from other parts of the country would be well served by some real Tex Mex here, but for Texans, it is like I said, solid but not exceptional. Pork stew with green sauce is my go-to dish. Chile rellenos are also good, as are their tortillas. read more

First time I visited El Tejavan. It was a nice place and the location was good. The food was more authentic than most. Oveall, I was not impressed. The food was okay and the server was less than attentive. I would like to try the margaritas, they seemed popular. I would not go back on my own. It is too far from my home. But I would go if the group I was in wanted to go. read more

There has never been a visit to el tajavan where I wasn't satisfied the staff is awesome and the food and drinks are even better!!!

Ordered the Carne Asada. I have to say it was disappointing. The steak was flatter than a pancake and dry as a bone. It had no seasoning at all. The beans and rice were okay but nothing special. Thank God the margarita was decent. Chips were okay and the salsa was average. i had to step it up with the hotter version. I won't be back. read more

This is only a review of their menudo. Used yelp to find some good menudo in Amarillo, so I try this place. While not bad by any means, it was very bland. Have had much better. I also had to ask for chopped chili peppers to be brought to me to garnish the menudo. A place the really knows their menudo should not have let this happen. I admit their other menu items looked good and the service was good. read more

If you order the Fajitas Trio for 2 and ask for additional tortillas get ready to pay .70 more for each one you ask for. Never in my life have I ever been charged for something like this on top of the $27 plus to start with. Food was good. read more

Excellent home made corn tortillas! Who knew this little gem is one of Amarillo's best kept secrets for a killer Saturday breakfast?! Had the Enchiladas Montadas ( pork seasoned with chorizo seasoning rolled in corn tortillas topped with two over easy eggs ) and it was great. Normally I don't like runny yoked eggs, but it was a great compliment on this dish! Staff was super friendly and their ability to juggle the tables efficiently was great to watch. read more

I was passing through Amarillo for work and was looking for a decent Mexican restaurant. I'm not really a big fan of Mexican normally because it's usually really bogged down with cheese. I decided to give El Tejavan a try anyway and loved it. It's off the highway like everything in Amarillo, but not in a super touristy area. It is small and unassuming, the staff is really nice, the guacamole is fresh and delicious. The food was fantastic and reasonably priced. Go there! read more

Why do people in Amarillo still eat at "On the Border" or "Leal's" when El Tejavan is right there on I40 West??? It's not even only in the "hood" any more!! The best authentic tacos (al pastor, adobada, asado, etc) in any sit down restaurant in Amarillo. Love the Carne Asada, grilled beef sliced thin, and served with tortillas, grilled onions, and a great cook pico de gallo. If you have had bad "fajita" experiences lately, you have to try, it blows the competition away. My favorite is the "Cocktel de Camarones", an awesome Mexican Shrimp Cocktail. It is served in a beer goblet, chilled, with avocado, cilantro, shrimp, and a nice tomato sauce (clamato maybe?), with hot sauce and crackers...wow!! Had the cabrito (stewed goat) on a cold winters day last week, and left feeling warm and fuzzy.... read more

When we first walked in the door, the restaurant was quiet and the decor a bit dated. By the time we got our drinks and first tapas, the place was packed and buzzing. We shared all our courses and loved every single one. The cost is reasonable and the food is unique and flavorful. A nice change of pace. read more

Man, I don't know if the reviews are old and things have changed or what? The chips and salsa were terrible. The salsa tasted like pureed tomatoes and chilis. No garlic, no salt, no cilantro, just nothing special. And the chips were the worst I have ever tried. They were very thin and brittle, reminded me of baked chips. Terrible. I would have thought they would have restaurant style or homemade chips for the price of the restaurant. My husband had the chile rellano and said it was pretty bland. Nothing exciting. We shared the caldo de res. I thought it was good. Nice flavor, but pretty expensive for the amount. I ordered a chalupa because I saw it on the website. Turns out that the pic on the chalupa page is not a chalupa but a gordita. I showed the waitress and she did not offer to exchange the item I got for the correct one. For the price of the food, she should have done that. So I ate the chalupa anyway. It had a lot of meat. The meat was pretty salty. It was just okay. The waitress never smiled once or treated us with any enthusiasm. It was lucky for them my husband did the tipping. I wlll not be returning. read more

Do not even want to give it a star because they do not even deserve it. Where to begin? My husband and I went on a quest for a new place to try for dinner and since we had not tried El Tajavan we decided to give it a try. We first were seated at a table that did not have any lighting except for the table across from our table. Unable to read the menu due to the very poor lighting and the black background on the menus, WOW talk about tough on the eyes! We tried to decide on what we were going to have for dinner. The waitress was friendly though, we ordered guacamole as an appetizer and it was good but was over loaded with onion, don't get me wrong, I do like onion but not to the point where it over runs the rest of the flavors. After still not being able to decide on our main course due to the lighting, I guess the head waitress came over and asked if we would like to move to a table that had lighting. Of course we said yes. So we ordered and had the chips and salsa wich we both thought were very good. My husband ordered the fried Chili Rellano, and I ordered the 3 Enchiladas, one Beef, one Chicken and one Cheese. When we were served my husbands Chili Rellano was mushy, my Enchiladas were warm, the cheeses on top was not even melted, and after the first bite I didn't like how it tasted. I picked my plate up and tilted it to one side and my oh my the water drained out of the Enciladas. Right then I knew they had been frozen and not fresh. And gaucamole dip that was served on the plate was for sure store bought. Yuck! From a mushy Rellano and watery Enchiladas, the microwave had been used. Definitely will not return.
