Easily the worst Mexican restaurant I've been to. The atmosphere gives off that it is a authentic restaurant but once we sat down our visit went downhill. A) service - we received some of the worst service in town!! The waitress kept forgetting orders and mixing them up. She was careless and did not seem to understand what was going on. I ordered a vegetarian burrito and she came out saying "chicken burrito?", I replied "I ordered a veggie burrito" to which she stated "oh, here you go" and I had to send her back to the kitchen to make sure that it was not a chicken burrito. The waitress also charged for every little thing, which is not fair because for the amount of food that comes with the fajitas, not enough tortillas are provided. My friend asked for extra and he was charged $1.25/piece. The waitress also OFFERED us, we DID NOT ask for, but SHE offered us spicy salsa....upon receiving the bill we were charged. Even through all the ups and downs we still tipped the waitress 20% when she should not have received any tip. B) food - the food was absolutely disgusting and was a disgrace to Mexican food! My friend who ordered qusedillas and myself who ordered a burrito were presented with food cold as a rock! The cheese was not melted and it all fell off in one giant piece when cutting into my burrito. The guacamole was flavorless, the queso had clearly been heated up in a microwave, and the rice was as bland as can be. It seems as if the food was prepared as carelessly as the waitress served the patrons. Overall I give this place a 1/5 stars and recommend anyone looking for decent food avoid this place. If you like bland and flavorless food, you will love this place and if you're lucky you'll receive the same terrible service we did. But if you enjoy real Mexican food with great service, I suggest you go to any of the other Mexican restaurants in this area. read more

We have been coming here for a while now. (Delaware location) Great atmosphere! We asked the server if beans are made in pork, the server told us no and menu did not mention it either. So, we ordered them and found out later that beans are indeed made in pork lard. If that is not discriminatory then I don't know what is. I ordered tacos de pollo asado and some kind of virgin mango flavored drink (it doesn't seem to be on the menu but I asked my waitress what she suggested). You're started out with chips and salsa which are good, but not very special. The portions are large. The tacos come out as double tortillas with the meat on them, piping hot and covered in foil. You get pico de gallo in a bowl on the side along with beans and cheese and salsa both on the side. I like this way of bringing the food out since it minimizes the sogginess of the tacos and you can add what you like. It was difficult to finish all of my food since there was just so much, but it tasted great so it was worth the challenge. The salsa roja really good, but pretty spicy so watch out for that. The drink, however, was not that good. It tasted chalky, and had a sort of ambiguous fruit taste. It wasn't mango flavored like I was told. Ambience wise, I love the decor, lighting, and music in El Tapatio. It's exciting but not distracting to diners. read more

Typical strip mall mexican joint, extensive menu, many items pretty overpriced, taking into account that a lot of what you get is rice and beans. We ordered takeout steak fajitas, which were ok, meat not especially tender or flavorful, swimming in peppers and onions. Tortillas were well wrapped in their little aluminum roll and beans, etc. in a separate container. Beans and rice were ok. Salsas were ok as far as flavor, but one annoying detail- wanted to ask for extra salsa and it was $2 additional - wait, what? Music playing in the background that created a festive ambience. Large selections of items to choose from with reasonable prices. Plus the portions are huge. Took my family here for my wifes birthday and left very impressed! Definitely wish there was one of these in Virginia! Our favorite mexican place before was Uncle Julios. That was before coming here! 1st, I loved the festive interior. Extremely colorfull and festive. The service was awesome as well. Our waitress was very attentive and our food came out very fast. The complimentary chips and salsa upon sitting down were fantastic! Some of the best salsa Ive ever had. Our table shared a pitcher of strawberry margaritas. I wont lie and act like Im a big drinker because Im not... but it was definitely good. Not very strong, and leaned more to the sweet and fruity side. The food was excellent. BEWARE OF EL TAPATIO - they will nickel and Dime you. We had a party of three and received chips and salsa upon arriving and just as we do at any Mexican/texmex restaurant, we went right through them only to notice that they charge 1.99 for a chip refill. After we received our food we noticed our meals had less than a teaspoon of guacamole we asked for more and were told that we would be charged for it. To top it all off, the fish tacos we ordered were fish, flour tortillas and salsa. Pretty plain. When we asked for a little bit of lettuce to go on these dry tacos, they were going to charge us for that to. We asked for the manager and all she could say was "We make the guacamole fresh." Right off the bat, I thought the chips and salsa were really good. I love fresh warm tortilla chips. I tried the Chimichangas, and I have to say I really enjoyed them. I had one fried and the other soft, but both were chicken. The fried was definitely better then the soft. It was covered with a creamy cheese sauce, lettuce, a slice of tomato, sour cream, and guacamole. My wife had one of the combo plates with a taco, 2 enchiladas and a queso fundido. My family introduced me to this restaurant and now my boyfriend and I have become regulars! The live mariachi band on Friday night is super fun and just made for a fantastic ambiance! The servers were extremely friendly and apologized for the slightly long wait, although, it was pretty busy in there so I can't blame them. Went with the carnitas burritos and a side order of poblano. The pork was juicy and tender. The burritos were well made and pretty straight forward with green salsa and cheese. It was a simple burrito, more like a basic type with no frills. The burrito was meat in the tortilla with the sauce and cheese. No fancy fruit salsa, imported cheeses, or other fusion additions. Just a basic good burrito with well made carnitas. It was soft, juicy and tender. The poblano was a soft but not soggy pepper with creamy evenly melted cheese. Staff was friendly and service was fast. Lots of parking and a convenient location. A nice solid comfort food type of Mexican restaurant. Came here on Mother's Day and our server couldn't seem to understand a plain chicken burrito. We sent it back 3 times which is something we hate and never do but they just couldn't seem to get it right. We won't be back here. Loved the gorgeous, colorful authentic Mexican decor. Each chair is hand painted and walls adorned with paintings, including by Kahle and Rivera. Went here with a group from work- so very diverse palates. We ordered a variety of items with no problem. Vegetarian options are available. Guacamole is okay- I ordered mine to be chunky after looking at the strangely smooth bowls served to a friend. My burrito tapito was served with chunky guacamole refried beans and rice. Today we experienced the craziest thing. As my wife and I were enjoying a meal-- (as we do there every 2 weeks) we recognized that our bill was $16 higher then it should've been after reviewing a previous check they had shown us. After 4 beers, the waiter added herself the tip that she "thought she deserved." When we questioned her about it she said that it was a new rule that over "$60 spent, the tip was included" --- really? For a party of 2 we asked? We asked for the manager and he basically said "if the waiter knows you don't tip well enough they add their own tip" like WTF! I am a surgeon, my wife a director-- we tip a minimum of 25% on every FUCKING Bill. Did they confuse us? Do doctors charge you double a visit because they feel like it? No. All I know -- is that we were fucking pissed off. Tips are earned by the way---- and if you charge a party of 2 gratuity then let the public know that! Everyone please PLEASE review your checks! This was completely unprofessional and we will be reporting it to the Department of Labor and the corporate office. Don't fucking think this will go unnoticed. We enjoy dining at this restaurant on a Friday night to hear the live mariachi band. The band members are all so friendly and the music is not too loud so you can still hold a conversation with those at your table. All of the waiters are very friendly as well. Although there always is a wait for a table, it only takes about 10 minutes to get seated. Once seated, you not only get greeted by your waitress but you are also given tortilla chips which are so flavorful. For my main course, I like the chicken enchiladas with green tomatillo sauce.
