I've eaten at El Tapatio many times. Probably about 10. Never had a single bad experience. I'm not saying it's out of this world. But it deserves a higher rating than I'm seeing. I was shocked to see the low score. Don't read too much in to that. I've never disliked any of the food I ordered. Last time we went to El Tapatio there was a couple of old ladies singing live tunes to the small group of patrons / customers. Both myself and my date had fun and liked the food. She is picky and she loved it. I am not. The staff is super friendly. I usually just get the dinner combination. I think it was rice and beans, burrito + chalupa. The mesa shell was awesome and I scarfed every single bit of my entree. Later I ate seconds at home. The servings are generous and the bill was totally acceptable. The service though, is amazing. My family and I are in the process of relocating to the area from so cal and we've discovered we're not alone. We bring with us trained Mexican food palates. We love Mexican. If it weren't for the calories we would eat Mexican eight days a week. Mexican is wonderful and can rise to the level of art every bit as much as French. So it is with some considerable authority that we speak as a family and beg you to learn from our experience. We're guessing this place only survives because of its location, which ensures that it gets a lot of drive-by tourist clientele, especially during the Festival season. How do you make Mexican flavorless? They succeeded. Start with the chips and salsa: salt free? And watered-down salsa with not only no kick, but almost no taste. My wife had (rather, drank) menudo - watery, minimal tripe. The traditional side things you usually get to throw in (parsley, onions, corn, peppers - all fresh) were all from the seasoning section of the supermarket, dry and flaky, not fresh. My daughter had chicken that was covered in a sauce that was quite obviously tomato paste with sugar. Were they going for mole? I had a pork tostada. Okay, we've been spoiled by cal mex and I was expecting the shell Instead, it was one corn tortilla fried hard buried under shredded lettuce, grated cheese from the supermarket, tomatoes, a teaspoon of sour cream, a teaspoon of guacamole (extra charge) and about four diced cubes of chicken. Oh, a teaspoonful of cold refried canned beans. $13? Taco bell is worlds better at half the price. Providing a soundtrack to the worst (and that's the only reason my family encouraged me to write this review - we NEVER have reviewed a restaurant before, anywhere) Mexican meal - certainly the worst of any culture for those prices - were two very nice elderly ladies with a karaoke machine trying to do Eagles. They're undoubtedly very nice and somebody's grannies, but their variety of entertainment is usually limited to nursing homes, not a restaurant with first class prices (though 5th class food). I feel bad writing this, but you have to know what you're getting into if you go to this place. They're charging like it's Acapulco's when their food is worse than street vendors (actually, street vendor food is usually pretty good so strike that). Difficult to figure out where the parking lot is if you don't already know. You need to go in through the car dealership then pull around to the back, no direct street access. Says on Yelp they are open until 12:00AM on Friday nights. This is incorrect! We tried to call ahead to ensure they would be open. No answer on phone, we get a message that voicemail is not setup. Decide to try anyway. We got there at 11:30PM. Open signs are all on, great! Walk in, Owner says they are closed. Womp womp. We told him it wait, it says online they are open until Midnight. "Only some nights when there is live music," he says. Alright 'den. Either you're open 'til 12AM or you aren't, shouldn't really be that complex. This place has so many bad reviews I was all prepared to hate it. Instead, I was quite pleased with my visit here. First, the chips were crisp and came with a huge cruet of flavorful salsa. Then, I ordered menudo. It came with chile flakes, Mexican oregano and onions (but no lime slices) The lime slices I didn't miss 'cause I used some of the abundant salsa instead of the chile flakes. There were also four corn tortillas. The menudo was of an nonstandard color, sort of tan instead of red, but had less grease than menudo often comes with, a good portion of cow stomach, and a flavorful broth. It was a good sized bowl for just $8.50. My dining companion had a tostado, and was quite satisfied with that. There were good live musicians playing on the little stage in the dining room, and they also had a card they stamp for every meal you buy, and eventually you can get one free. read more

We found this place on our drive up the I-5. I had the veggie burrito meal and it was probably the beat veggie rito' I'd ever had! It was full of broccoli, carrots, cauliflower, green bell peppers, onions, and a bit of cheese. The gentleman that helped us was nice and they even had a guy strumming his guitar up on stage and he sounded great. Worth saying that my first food experience with El Tapatio was actually really good. I got some mole enchiladas with ground beef and it was pretty darn tasty. Not exactly a difficult thing to make and the sauce was possibly not house-made, but I loved every bite, so I can't really complain. Today I ordered out some vegetarian fajitas. The description said it came with rice, beans, sauteed green peppers, mushrooms, onions, guacamole, pico de gallo, and sour cream. I got it because it said it came with these ingredients, and it did. It came with all of them. What it did not tell me was that it would also include cauliflower, broccoli, and carrots, which made up about half the fajita filling. I didn't want any of those vegetables. If I did, I would have gotten Chinese cuisine. It also didn't come with any tortillas (not that they said it would, but I think that's kind of a key part of a fajita), so I basically ate a plate of beans and condiments with a couple peppers, onions, and mushrooms tossed in. It's not very good, and I could have gotten this at any other Mexican restaurant. So, next time I'll get the steak fajitas. Actually, I probably just won't get fajitas from them again. But I'll probably get the enchiladas. read more

Worst restaurant experience I've ever had. The entrance is difficult to find and you have to maneuver to behind other buildings in the parking lot. Right when you walk in the door, a woman is there trying to sell you jewelry so you have to evade her even to get to the hostess. The featured "Live Music" is two older women performing very loud karaoke, looking incredibly bored and meaning you can't hear your partner even when sitting in the back of the restaurant. After all the weirdness, the chips and salsa were stale and watery, respectively. I had a quesadilla that had way too many tiny shrimp and what tasted like BBQ sauce. Even after putting the terrible dining experience behind me, the restaurant charged my card THREE TIMES for $10 more than the ticket price, resulting in a $90 meal for two people. What a great place. So glad I stopped! I had been driving all night from Laguna Beach. I was exhausted and looking for a good hearty breakfast but with 300 more miles to drive to Portland I didn't want a carb hangover. I looked at the menu and was about to order and Jorge came over and asked if I might be interested in the chicken soup he had JUST finished preparing? I could see in his eyes and hear in his delivery that I would be missing out on something really good if I passed. I took him up on it and it was definitely the right choice. Perfectly cooked veggies, chicken was so tender it fell off the bone. He asked me if I wanted it served in the traditional Mexican way with a little rice and I said yes. I am so satisfied. This is obviously not Jorge's first rodeo. He was ultra professional and friendly. I enjoyed our conversation. He was very proud of his restaurant and were he has chosen to live his life. He cautioned me to obey the speed limit so in addition to serving me excellent food and hooking me up with a coffee for the road he probably saved me $400! My wife and I have been to this restaurant several times... we have been repeatedly told that the rice and beans are vegetarian (meaning no lard or chicken broth in the rice)... after our fourth or fifth trip to the restaurant we decided to ask again because we had a different waitress then the times before who told us that there was in FACT!!!! chicken broth in the rice... we feel like we have been completely betrayed and lied to because we are in fact vegetarians. We have told multiple people about the that the beans and rice in this establishment are vegetarian and when they attended the restaurant they asked as well and were told the same thing by the same person that told us. I have ordered take out from here twice and have been disappointed and underwhelmed. The food just doesn't taste very good. A friend was wanting to treat me to a meal at a Mexican restaurant and she suggested this place. I told her about my previous experiences and suggested we go to Taqueria Picaro. She didn't want to bother going downtown and this place was near where we lived, so off we went. We walk in and there are 2 older ladies with purple shirts on singing what we thought was karaoke, but turned out they were the "live" music. Honestly, they were rather endearing, if slightly off key. My friend ordered the chimichanga and I ordered the shrimp wrapped with bacon. Wow, I have never had such inedible shrimp in my life-- they obviously baked the f**k out of it. Even the bacon was super dry. I tried to pile on some guacamole and sour cream and it didn't help at all. The bacon should add wonderful flavor and an little fat to the shrimp. Not here, apparently. My friend texted me the next day and said the chimichanga did NOT agree with her at all. Don't waste your time here-- there are WAY better places to go. Hint-- Taqueria Picaro and Agave. read more

The word "produces" is intentional. The enchilada was a tasteless soggy and pale blob. The taco was semi-soggy, semi-crisp factory manufactured shell accompanied by iceberg lettuce. Bad service, employees acted as if we were a nuisance to their chatting. Margarita was a lower quality than a gas station. No music just silence. Water glasses were empty and no one checked on us during the entire meal. At the end, we went to use a online coupon (limelight deal) which they advertised for months about. The deal clearly says bring in your phone and show to employee. They would not accept it and refused to do anything about it. To start off there was no body in the restaurant besides a big party group. We walked in and we didn't know where to check in for a table. Once we got attention they took forever to set up our table and ended just putting a small table on the end of a booth where the booth and chairs were wobbly.
