Since moving in 6 weeks ago, they've become a staple in our home; I've tried all kinds of tacos and burritos and tostadas and huaraches with different meats, and everything has been exceptional. Despite being tucked away in the far northeast corner of Raleigh (almost in Knightdale), Taco Market is worth the drive. It is in a space that was either an Arby's or a Bojangles but has been decorated cheerfully. Order up at the counter from a huge menu both in front of you and to your right and wait for your food. When your food comes out, make sure to ask for some little plastic containers to fill with sauces and other accouterments in the super fresh and absolutely amazing salsa bar. Seriously I could go on and on about the salsa bar -- fresh pico de gallo, onions, radishes and cilantro as well as 4-5 different hot sauces (though only the bright red arbol/habanero is really intense). After scoping out the cold side of the salsa bar, make sure to notice the two covered dishes to their right. The larger container contains tasty blistered onions and jalapeños and the little one contains this insanely hot oil with toasted dried peppers that kicked my butt. As to the food itself -- the tripe is the best I've ever had, served crispy while not a bit tough or chewy. If you're a fan, it's outstanding. The carne asada is also good, the 'puerco' (basically carnitas) is roasted really nicely and the al pastor is really good though it's actually de trompo style (not sweet at all and drier). Have tried those in taco, huarache, torta and sope formats and loved all of it. Delicious and affordable food. You could easily drive right past this restaurant without noticing it. They also have a drive-thru which is very convenient and some of the best food you can get from a drive thru in Raleigh. The part of town isn't the best, but this is a good lunch spot if you find yourself in west Raleigh or Knightdale. read more

Took our family last night. Our kids have become recently very picky eaters so we were nervous to say the least. I ordered several types of tacos and found that they are HUGE fans (and so are we) of the Al Pastor tacos here! The Carne Asada Tacos and Sopes are also quite good. Can't wait to try their Tortas. This place is definitely going to get us coming back. The food was great. Agua Frescas: Awesome we tried the Melón and horchata, super tasty. Salsas: No Joke, their salsa is great but also VERY Spicy. I have Mexican ancestry and have a pretty decent salsa tolerance and will say that a little of their salsa goes a long way so go easy when you get some. A couple nit-picky things. They use Styrofoam for plates and plastics for just about everything. I do wish they would consider silverware in the future and less use of non-recyclable no biodegradable items. Some of the dishes come on reusable plastic plates and taco trays on paper but I do cringe every time I see the styrofoam. They have a new TV Screen for the menu and it rotates every other minute between different food items. So you may not see the tacos at all if you glance at the screen when you arrive until a minute or two later. That said this place is worthy of the drive. I don't get this place... I keep coming back and every time I'm disappointed. I like that a lot of the meals come with chips and salsa. But the food is alwaysss cold. I've been here a good 8 times maybe got warm food once. I'll try it for dine in when they re open for their salsa and toppings bar but the drive thru is a total miss. They don't all really speak English, so you'll have a much easier time as a spanish speaker. And every time I order at the speaker you have to re order at the window cuz they missed something. I do love that they serve Pibb to drink though! The menu is great and I want to like this place so bad, I just really don't. Also there's always additional charges on my receipt with no explanation... it'll say "extra....$1 extra.....$1" and I don't add anything extra whatsoever or customize the meal. read more

Very good! Had the asada quesadilla and flan for dessert. Quesadilla was fresh,cheesy, creamy, just very good with the spicy green verde sauce also good. The flan was a large slice portion 12oz, creamy, just great. The flan is made by a company called la Bonita located in 911 e.main street clayton, nc per the labelled container. Best of all the have DRIVE THRU! No paper menus or website, sweet lady at the window helped with the menu after explaining a few items. Definitely can't wait to go back!! Certainly a step above Taco Bell, you can tell what meat you're eating and they use fresh ingredients. They also fry their shells by hand and you can definitely tell the difference. And the price is on par with Taco Bell anyway so I really don't have any reason to go back to Taco Bell. I'd suggest going to check them out, even if the location is a little out of the way. read more

This is one of my go to spots every now and then for dinner sometimes lunch. But mainly dinner. 90% of the time I order the California burrito which is $6.99 for chicken or beef, add another $1 if you want to make it grilled chicken or shrimp burritro. The grilled chicken is with the extra dollar. Adding shrimp is not worth it because they cook it as mini popcorn shrimp. It doesn't taste good in the burrito or go well with it. I haven't tried much of their other good items but it's fairly good. The gem dish of the place is the California burritos. read more

I wandered over here in search of something Mexican but not fast food or faux Mexican (On the Border, Qdoba, Salsaritas,etc). This is the real deal! And it's FAST! They cater to everyone with the usual "Americanized" Mexican food and then the actual Mexican food... Clearly indicated by their menus. There is one in Spanish and one in English (Americanized). I opted to go for the American Mexican food... you know with cheese, cuz I LOVE CHEEESE! (in my Steve Urkel voice). Both the woman and man were very patient with explaining dishes and taking my order as I went back and forth. If this didn't confirm the service and vouch for the food... a nice, big, surly man let me know how great the food is. As he walked by me with taco drippings on his shirt, I thought to myself..."Self..why not give it a try. The big, surly man said it was okay." The point is, the food was good. What would have set it off is some fresh salsa. I don't believe my order qualified me to get "salads" from the bar, so the dude gave me some salsa packets. It was aight, but I love me some spicy fresh salsa. Perhaps next time I will partake in an authentic order of Mexican food. read more

Tasty food, Tehy do not speak a lot of English but they do speak Taco and that's all I was about! Been twice now had shrimp tacos and also a stew thing. Everything is tasty, quite cheap. The interior is dated but clean. Kitchen works very quick and noone seems to mind that we speak no Spanish. Tasty go for it! read more

Don't get me wrong...drive thru is great when tacos and burritos are wanted. The cashier was very helpful in translating the "Spanish" menu, too!!! If you are used to getting tacos and burritos at Mexican joints, it might seem strange to order a sandwich, but the bread is fresh and delicious, the choice of toppings is unique, and the overall quality is excellent. First, Chris B. is absolutely correct - CLEAN THE TABLES. I grabbed some spare paper towels I had in the car, and cleaned one off myself. Second, very few people speak English there - at least have a cashier whose bilingual. Now, for the food. I was REALLY hoping for something good. Unfortunately, I have found something more disgusting then Haggis (yes, the Scottish "food") - Menudo. It was a greasy soup; the beef tripe was rubbery and tasteless, the tomato flavor was almost non-existent, there were several "?beef-parts?" that we completely unidentifiable, and lastly - it smelled horrible. Sorry folks - it was sewage in a bowl. I tried adding onions, peppers, cilantro - No help. About 20 minutes after I left, I was quite ill/sick. ?Food Poisoning? Yay El Taco Market! Stopped by this place after driving down Taco Row on the way to a friend's house and had to stop. First, the menu is huge. Do yourself a favor though and order the tacos directly and DON'T get the hardshell--those are the americanized versions. That's nonsense and you didn't come to El Taco Market for that. The tacos that I had were delish and well seasoned. We also had some frijoles (yes, always) and some chips, which were pretty solid. Plus Jarritos? Best dinner. They have a really solid salsa bar, though everything was pretty flamin' hot so I stuck with my pico de gallo and Cholula (I am weak, you should definitely try the salsa). This place is probably hands down the best taco joint I've had in North Carolina. They serve up authentic mexican tacos on corn tortillas and the meat if flavored perfectly. Also, they have a small condiment bar so you can load up on extra lettuce, jalapeños and salsas if you'd like. The only downsides are that the place itself is a little 'old' and rundown and unfortunately I got there right at lunch so service was a little on the slow side. There are two menus at The Taco Maker (or El Taco Maker) -- one is more of your typical fast food tex-mex choices, and one - in Spanish - that is more purely Mexican. I got the burrito california, and it was delicious. It was perfectly proportioned with rice, beans, meat and little dabs here and there of guacamole, sour cream and cilantro. There is a 'fixings' bar with cucumbers, pickled onions, 3 or 4 sauces, jalapenos, etc. My husband had the tacos, which were small but extremely inexpensive - he had 3 for less than $3. I would recommend this place over any of the other sit-down Mexican restaurants I've been to in the area. The food is better -- you'll just have to buy your own chips & salsa. read more
