mmm~ A taste of home! Wow, after moving from SoCal I felt as if I would never have familiar Mexican food again. Baja Burrito makes a great burrito with excellent sauces, including spicy sauces that are full of flavor to go along with the heat. There isn't much to say about the service, you go to the counter, order, and pick up your food to sit at a table. It is very much a serve-yourself type if place. It isn't crowded with tables, so it is also easy to move around in, which I appreciate, though I may regret if I visit during a rush! This is a go to place for my husband when we come to Raleigh! He has actually been coming here for over 10 years. The menu is simple and the ingredients are fresh. You order at the register and by the time you walk to the end of the counter your food is ready! I made a burrito plate instead of having the full burrito. It was delicious. I recommend the mole chicken. It has a unique flavor and is shredded finely it's really delicious. I have eaten here several times. Yesterday i ordered takeout for the first time in about a year. When i showed up to pick it up they did not have it ready, not the end of the world as they were able to make it relatively quickly (maybe they didnt pre make it because i selected the option to pay with my card when i arrived). The most disappointing thing was the food itself. I chose the vegetarian option and it was just kind of gross. Taste was good, a little bland for me - but I'll know to add more jalapeños or ask for extra pico next time. I got a side of queso for my chips and was a little shocked at how small the portion size they gave me was. It was served in a small cup as if you'd put a side of ketchup or something in. Baja Burrito is right around the corner from work so I've been there a bunch ot times but it's usually because I'm being dragged over by somebody else! It's really not a bad place, a casual college taqueria that's usually a bit crowded with ok food. The menu is simple: tacos, burritos, quesadillas and salads with your choice of chicken (mole, verde), steak and pork. I typically get the mole chicken quesadilla which is a lot of food. The place is inexpensive but not cheap, expect to pay $8+ for lunch with a drink. I'd give them a better rating but two things bug me about the place. The burritos and quesadillas come with chips but no salsa! You pay an extra .55 for the salsa, are you kidding me?! I mean the stuff is decent but most Mexican places treat salsa as a condiment, you just get it with the meal! The other reason is burrito snobbery. I knocked down a ton in SF so that's my standard. At Baja, they don't take the time out to squeeze the liquid out of their ingredients and don't steam the tortilla. So you end up with a very wet, loose burrito that falls apart quickly. A no-no in my book, burritos are meant to be eaten out of hand, not with a fork. So what can I say the place is ok but I always seem to leave a bit disappointed. You can do worse than Baja Burrito but I'm guessing that Chipotle and a lot of local taquerias do a way better job of delivering Mexican food! read more

Went to Baja Burrito with a couple of friends before a movie the other night. The praise was high as were my expectations. The interior isn't anything fancy. Bright colors on the walls but everything is pretty bland. I ordered the Deluxe Chicken Mole Burrito. It came with Chicken, Black Beans, Rice, Sour Cream, and Hot Sauce. It was plenty big. The flavor of the chicken was good but I was expecting more heat from the hot sauce. It was also really really messy and didn't hold together like I expected. Something that went into it was just too watery. Don't get me wrong I didn't mind the mess but I missed the ease of eating that comes with a slightly drier consistency. The chips that come with it are forgettable. It would really surprise me if they were home made. The service is forgettable. You don't have to do much to provide good service at a counter-type place but they missed the mark. Nonetheless, the burrito was good and I would go back to try the nachos, tacos, and quesadillas. read more

Come here hungry because these burritos are huge. The burritos are wrapped in foil whether you dine in or take out, and it helps keep the burrito together while you are eating it. Tortilla chips come as a side but they come plain. You will need to order some salsa separately if you want it but you will probably need extra chips as well. The burritos are a great price! And don't be put off if you come here at lunch and find a long-ish line at the register. This place is always well-staffed, and the manager (owner?) is fully on top of making sure that orders are processed efficiently and quickly. Based on the positive reviews (which I'm now noticing are two or three years old), I drove 25 minutes to check this place out. Quite possibly the worst burrito I've ever had. The tortilla was overly steamed to an almost pasty-wet consistency; the white rice was cooked to mush; the chicken was sparse; and the sour cream, guacamole and salsa that I paid extra for was limited to about 1/3 of the burrito at one end. If there was any cheese inside, I couldn't see or taste it. The chips were actually warm and tasty; but when I asked for some dipping salsa, I was told it would be 55 cents extra. There were only two people seated at a table at 12:30 pm, which should have been a warning. Also, the restaurant is located in an old, worn down, split level outdoor mall where half the stores are vacant, the stairwell up from the rear parking lot was dirty, dark and littered, and a few sketchy-looking individuals were hanging around. Cheap Southwestern eats that is a big win! I go at least 3-4 times a month for lunch. I always get the nachos all the way and my co-buddy always gets the steak burrito. The nachos are super tasty. They are steamed to melt the cheddar the way they should be. No mystery "cheese sauce" here! I also get loads of black beans, guac, sour cream, pico de gallo, jalapenos and their house hot sauce (which is pretty good - get extra if you like some heat). The order process is a guy just asking questions and the paper doesn't even have all the options on it. While the other person was making my food I asked about lettuce. She told me it was extra. Ever since i've started work in the area, Baja Burrito has become that something I CRAVE (literally) when 11:30AM comes along. Everything I've had there has been amazing. Sure, it's not fancy food, but it sure is tasty and satisfying. They also have awesome healthy options. Brown rice, grilled veggies, grilled fish. it's soooooooo good. I give this place 3 stars mostly because of my interaction with the cashier taking the order (middle aged Caucasian lady, short blonde hair). She seemed to be very flustered (borderline rude) when I tried ordering a side of both pico and hot salsa which totally threw her off. Apparently, after so many years of being open, they have not realized the difference between hot SAUCE and hot SALSA. She kept saying they don't have hot salsa, but do have hot sauce. Hot sauce is typically served from a bottle with vinegar as key ingredient. Hot salsa is just a spicier version of salsa (by preference) among all kinds of salsa i.e. green, red, etc. After more miscommunication with the cashier and finally giving up on my exchange with her, I just hoped that I get my food hot salsa or not and paid for it. Moments later I asked one of the very sweet Latina ladies as to why the blonde cashier kept calling it hot sauce, knowing well her and I that it is a salsa and not hot sauce. She said she had no idea but agreed with me in the cashiers confusion and that's just the way it has been. My main advice, from a Mexican-American customer, if you're going to embrace and make a business out of a culture's food, embrace it fully by learning the little nuances of the idioms and names. Aside from my bitter, noon interaction with the cashier, the ladies in the kitchen and on the food prep line are super nice and do an excellent job in making delicious food for this place. read more
