This is my go to Mexican restaurant especially after a long day of work. Their green chicken enchiladas is really good! Good portion in my opinion. Their tacos are really good as well. If I don't get the enchiladas I get the al pastor tacos. I once got the chimichanga and that was also really good. The fried dough was soft. Their customer service is 100%. We were looking for a Mexican Restaurant in Highland Park to eat dinner and we found this place that's still open late. We ordered Chicken Fajitas and Bistec Encebollado. The chicken fajita meat is soft, moist and taste great with sautéed sweet peppers and onions, it's delicious. The beef Bistec was thinly sliced but dry and a bit hard. Well lighted and nice decorated Mexican Restaurant. Service staff a one man team. He's the Cashier, Bus Boy and Server. He's friendly and attentive. This is one of our two local Mexican spots. Super nice people who take great pride in their restaurant. My daughters often choose this spot for their tacos. I try to order something new each visit. The last time we stopped I had the tostadas from the lunch menu. Full range of Mexican sodas. Most meals come with Spanish rice and beans. Tried to place on order on GrubHub on a Sunday before noon, but the app said it was going to take over an hour. So we decided to call in and it was about a an half hour instead for four orders. I went with the chicken burrito, which was good, but it was nothing special. The grilled chicken inside was not particularly exciting. However, I do appreciate that they put a good amount of chicken in there. I was only able to finish half the burrito and saved the rest for the next day. We only ordered here because we were in the area and needed a quick lunch spot to pick up some food, so I don't really see us coming back here. read more

Lunch is a few dollars cheaper than dinner, and is a slightly smaller portion, but not by much, so the price is right whenever you go. We absolutely love El Sol and get take out at least twice a month. We typically stick to tacos and burritos but some of the entrees (like the enchiladas) are also good. Our favorite part? The salsas! With your chips and salsa you get a red and a green. They are clearly homemade because they are slightly different each time but we love that and they are always delicious. There is indoor dining now available but they also do a great job with take out. read more

Only knocking one star because I went celebrating a birthday and was acknowledged that it was a birthday, and didn't get a free dessert. The Tall Man and I are still on a quest to find good Mexican food in Central Jersey and came across El Sol, right in "downtown" Highland Park and around the corner from our favorite coffee shop. The restaurant is cute, with brightly painted walls hung with fun ceramics and other decor. There were a few tables occupied for a weekday lunch but it wasn't busy. Service was quick and courteous. The Tall Man got a burrito especial with chorizo, while I got the bistec asado. The burrito was chock full of ingredients, although it was a little dry and had more rice than any other ingredient. My steak was decent but also a little dry, but the beans were tasty and added some needed moisture. Both of us agreed that our dishes were fine, big portions but somewhat lacking in flavor. Overall it was a decent experience, and I wouldn't mind returning if we were in the area and really wanted a Mexican fix. At least it beats out On the Border! read more

This place is such a cute restaurant in the heart of Highland Park! The service has always been great each time I've gone there which is something I really critique while trying new establishments. I ordered the enchiladas de verde. These are made with juicy shredded chicken and plenty of verde sauce. I was a little disappointed that the sauce wasn't spicy, not even the salsa. I'm not sure if this was because I didn't request it that way or if it is normally that way, however I'll make a note next time to order it spicy. I also wish they put onions and crumbly white cheese on top of them to enhance the flavor but overall the dish was delicious. I will continue to keep coming here for my favorite dish! Went for Daily Lunch Special Food - 5/5. Tortilla chips had good crunch to them and a good level of salt. I enjoyed there being two flavors of salsa to try. The red salsa had a richer tone while the green salsa had a refreshing flavor. Burrito was a good size with nice ratio of meat and rice. The beef was tender and the rice had a fluffy bite to them. The toppings looked pretty but was a bit of a hindrance when trying to eat the burrito as the sauce would get on your hands and the vegetables would fall off. It would have been nicer to have them on the side of the burrito instead; aesthetics pending. Service - 4/5. Very friendly and quick service. Value - 5/5. Their daily lunch specials run at $9 for any of the varieties they offer. Food is yummy and portions are plentiful. Fabulous! This little place has some great authentic Mexican food and I'm not easily pleased when it comes to Mexican. I ordered the bean burrito and guacamole. Food was average. I ordered empanadas and a pastel de 3 leches (tres leches cake). The empanadas were good and came with rice and beans. When I opened the small box of tres leches, I was taken aback by the blue frosting coating the cake. Then I saw that there was a raspberry looking filling in the cake. Right away I knew this wasn't tres leches and instead, birthday cake. Disappointing considering I placed my order solely craving tres leches. This is a great authentic mexican place in highland park. I got vegetable enchiladas and they were Delicious. The sauce was very Tasty and the rice was perfect. Fresh chips and salsa are given to you when you sit down. We got nachos as an appetizer and they were great. Not the typical nachos I'd expect. Still a good place to have Mexican food, but unfortunately they don't do mixed tacos, only one type for 3 tacos. Second time I came I got the chicken enchiladas and my friend got taco combo dinner with rice and beans. Chicken enchilada was delicious and the rice added an extra flavor. Decent, but not real authentic Mexican. With tons of great places so close by in NB, it's surprising this place is still in business. We ordered chimichangas and enchiladas mole. The server, who only whispered the entire time and never changed her blank expression, brought over some chips and salsa to start. Quite good! Green sauce and red sauce were tasty and chips were crispy and warm. The good ends there... the chimichangas were supposed to be filled with al pastor. I did find some small pebbles of pork distributed throughout, but the chimi was 90% rice with no sign of cheese. It was fried well, but just a huge carb bomb. Barely any protein. The mole sauce on the enchiladas was tasty, but the chicken inside was bland and rubbery. It seemed that it had been either previously frozen or just reheated to super overcooked and tasteless. Skip this restaurant and pick one of the many amazing Mexican spots in New Brunswick. read more

They have an amazing salsa verde sauce when they first serve chips and salsa. The chips come out warm like they were just freshly made. I ordered the vegetable tamales. They were pretty good...not the best I've had though. The portions are pretty big so I couldn't finish my meal. I think this place is a solid 3. Today was my first time ordering from this restaurant. I ordered the Garlic Shrimp dinner for my hus and me. The portions were good and everything was very tasty. If I had to critique further I would say just a little more garlic in the garlic sauce would have made it off the chart delicious. The chimichurri was the best I've ever had.
