This is a cute, little family-owned Mexican restaurant that is easy to overlook. The decor is bright and colorful and tables have a little cactus that produce fun vibes. The staff was very friendly, though a bit slow with bringing the check despite there only being 3 people to attend to. I was also disappointed that they did not have Watermelon Aqua Fresca available despite it being on the menu. Despite that, I really enjoyed both the chips/salsa and the Carne Asada Tacos. Depending on what you're used to, $9.00 for 3 tacos may be a bit pricey. The serving size was enough for just me and I was perfectly satiated by it. There was plenty of meat in the tacos and the cilantro did not overpower the tacos, but instead boosted the flavor. The beef was dry but I used the lime and the salsa verde from the chips to combat this. The chips and salsa are free with what you order, and I thought the chips were similar to any other chips you get from a Mexican restaurant. However, I am a huge fan of the salsa verde, which is why I used that for my tacos as well. It had enough spice to make my nose run, but there was plenty of sweet flavor to balance it out. The saltiness of the chips complimented this salsa well. Overall, I cannot wait to return here and try more of the many items they have!

This place used to be called Los Contreras, but I believe it is the same menu as when it was. This place was always excellent, inexpensive, delicious authentic Mexican food, but I feel like it's only gotten better. We just ordered out some burritos and a combination plate and everything was absolutely delicious. It's somehow gotten better! We moved a little further away from it recently, but we'll still be coming here when we're in the mood for great real Mexican food!

I skipped on the green sauce because it was really spicy.

We made reservations but waited 10 minutes to be seated. It was very crowded. Prices are reasonable. Now some negatives: I didn't care for where we were seated. We were 3 people and they made a table for us upstairs in what looked like their party room. There was a table of teenage girls there for their birthday. I wanted to be in the main dining room. Also there was a DOG at the table next to us and it was not a service dog!!! If I come back I will suggest downstairs.. also to smuggle a dog into a restaurant is completely unacceptable. She whipped the dog out of her pocketbook as though she had been hiding it all night. I am HIGHLY ALLERGIC. (sidenote the dog was adorable and well behaved, but should not have been in a restaurant on a Saturday night. ) Service was very slow. It took a while for water refills and drink orders. Now onto the food: the street corn was delicious but small. Plantains were good. I also had a mango frozen margarita. (at least I think it was a frozen margarita. It came in a martini glass while everyone else had a margarita glass so I have a problem with that as well. Margaritas belong in a margarita glass ). It was good. The steak and cheese taco was also good. And the tres leches was good.

Went to Meximodo for a birthday dinner and had mixed feelings about the experience…read more The vibe was really nice, and the service was great....our servers were attentive and made sure we were taken care of throughout the night. Unfortunately, the food just didn't live up to expectations. I ordered the steak tacos, and the steak honestly tasted like frozen Steak-umm meat. A few others at the table ordered the same and agreed. The only people who seemed to really enjoy their food were the ones who got the shrimp tacos. As for the margaritas, they were just okay...not very strong and not really worth the price. Overall, while the atmosphere and service were good, the food was disappointing. I don't think I'd return, especially when there are so many authentic Mexican spots that offer better quality.

You definitely have to circle around a few times to get a spot. When we went on a Tuesday night as a group of 3, although it was busy inside, we were seated immediately. It was busy and loud inside but we still were able to talk and hear each other without yelling. Our server Michael was great and super attentive. He was knowledgeable about the menu and answered all of our questions. Tuesdays are half off on tacos so I decided to order 4 tacos: the chicken tinga, al pastor, chorizo and potato, and the carne asada. I wanted to get 4 different tacos that I've never tried before and this was the perfect option since it was half off. This was an amazing idea because the portion size was huge and everything was so good. I was surprised by how much I liked the chorizo and potato taco because I don't usually get chorizo but I will definitely get it again. After eating we were too full to get dessert, but I would definitely like to try a dessert next time!

Our waitress was very nice and helpful. She came by many times to check on us. All of us ordered something different and loved everything. We ordered the beef empanadas for an appetizer. I would definitely go here again and try other items.

We sat at the bar, ordered way too much for two people, and enjoyed every bit of it. The empanadas, which are clearly a crowd favorite, absolutely delivered, and I loved that there were vegetarian options not just for those but across the menu more broadly. That made a big difference. Yes, it's crowded, and yes, you should think about reserving before you go, but the wait is worth it. The staff was also really helpful and kept things moving despite how packed the place was. If you're in Iselin, Jose Tejas is an easy recommendation.

It was cheap, but the price wasn't ever the issue, and super tasty. The mix of Cajun and Tex mex was wonderful. Was. We drove up to visit friends, and decided to stop for old times sake, get some of the camp town shrimp, and other tasty stuff we remembered. I'll start with the vibe. I've done some reading about the aesthetics of fascism and I wonder if maybe this is just the sign of the times we live in, but gone are the fun colorful Christmas lights and the rustic, carved up dining tables. Even the waiters look boring and professional and staid in their uniforms, I can tell they aren't allowed to display any uniqueness like they used to, because there wasn't a single tattoo or piercing to be seen. The bar? Don't even get me started. It looks like it's more fun at the local Applebees. All the people sitting there looking as miserable as the newfound aesthetic of the place What did they do to this place? All the Christmas lights are bland white. The whole vibe shifted. I asked the manager on the way to the bathroom if they changed the decor and he absolutely blew off my question and didn't respond. Maybe he was afraid to. Ok, so now the food, here's the chance to make up for the unfortunate vibes. Nope. The chimichurri steak was poor quality like shoe leather, with a serving of burnt broccoli. The camp town shrimp was okay, and my husband's salmon was also substandard. The menu had shrunk, friends told us they did that because of Covid. Covid was SIX YEARS AGO BRO! Fix your restaurant. It had sad "I'm selling it to private equity" vibes. Before you know it the food will be shipped in mass produced pre-prepared and frozen, they'll get rid of cooks, and the waiter will just bring it from the microwave, like crapplebees. What an absolute shame and I haven't wrote a review in years. I can't recommend this to our friends down south who go up to visit the NY NJ area anymore! I feel like I did a disservice sending anyone there, not knowing how far it's fallen. Shame!
