I moved to the area about a year ago and have frequented El Rincon at least once or twice a month. I guess that qualifies me as a regular. The menu is hit or miss but the crispy beef tacos are superb and the salsa is good too. They've apparently won awards for their green salsa version but you have to ask for it and a lot of the time, it's not available. Sadly, about 50% of the time I go there, the service is abysmal. I have to seat myself because when I walk in, either nobody is manning the front of the house, or people who appear to be doing nothing, simply ignore me. I always go by myself, with my newspaper, and I get the feeling that the wait staff aren't too keen on serving an individual, maybe because they think they won't get a decent tip. In my case, that is far from true, I always tip at least 40-50% of my bill and never less than $3, usually $4 and sometimes, when I actually get decent service, I tip $5 on a $10 meal (including drink). I've often seen tables of four or five get up and leave less tip than I do, on what is obviously a much higher bill. I usually don't mind but the last time I went there, the young waitress (whom I had tipped well on several other occasions) totally ignored me. It was not during a rush period. I waited for what I thought was a suitable period of time, several minutes, and then walked out into the lobby area to see if I could get a menu. That usually prompts SOMEONE to come to the table and at least take my drink order. The young waitress was standing at the front table in the lobby wiping down a menu. I approached her and asked nicely, with a smile on my face, if I could have a menu. She handed me the one she was wiping down and smiled and said, "Oh, Sorry." So I went back to my table and waited, and waited, and waited and waited. Finally, out of sheer embarrassment, the young man who was bussing tables and sweeping the floor, looked out toward the lobby and started calling the young woman's name. After two attempts to get her to come and serve me, he walked out into the lobby area and spoke to her. I know this because I could hear him and I speak Spanish. Then he came back into the dining area and starting cleaning tables again and still, she refused to come to my table and provide me with service. By this time, I had been sitting at the table for about ten minutes. He then, in exasperation, walked back out to where she was standing, still wiping down menus, and asked her again to come and serve me. By this time, I was done. As he came back into the dining area, I was putting on my coat and picking up my purse. He said, "I'm sorry lady, I'm sorry." I said, "I'm leaving" and thanked him. As I walked out the door, right past the young waitress, she snickered in my general direction as she continued to wipe down a menu. She had deliberately ignored me for ten minutes. I've had a lot of bad service over the years but this behavior was pretty shocking to me. My advice to you is never to go there alone and never to expect any kind of decent service. This waitress clearly felt that she could behave in this manner, with impunity and given the number of times I've had terrible service at El Rincon, it seems to be a systemic problem. If you go there, you're taking your chances. It made me feel pretty sad because I really like the tacos, but it's just not worth being treated like a piece of garbage by a teenager. read more
