I visited this restaurant 16 years ago and hated it and never set foot in it again until today. I was craving tacos, and my hubby joking said, "There's always El Rain-cone!" Because he knows how much I bad talked it over the years. Well, to call his bluff, I agreed to give it another try for dinner tonight and. . . Y'all!?! Not only was the service good, the food was GREAT! The beef fajitas were tender and well seasoned, the flour tortillas were homemade and hot/fresh, the ices tea was just the right amount of sweet and the puffy tacos were delicious (although the shell was more of a gordita texture than a traditional puffy taco, in my opinion but still good)!! I haven't been to this place in over 15 years. It was only after 10 minutes that it dawned on me as to why it's been that long. Our service was horrible! It took a while before we were even asked what we wanted to drink. Other customers that came in after us were being attended to before we were. Another server bought out our food and our original server totally disappeared. We later found out that she left for the day. Our food tasted like a Mexican TV dinner. The salsa was bland and had a weird after taste. I'm always amazed that places like this after years still remain in business. This place looks old and dingy. The manager should be fired! Many places like this are disappearing with the rising taxes and lack of interest from local politicians to keep generational businesses from closing shop. The small menudo was hot and delicious. Plenty of meat, hominy and spices. It's not the traditional type of menudo spices I'm use to, but I definitely enjoyed using my last corn tortilla sweeping the small leftover juices in my empty bowl. Folks looking at this review, the picture included is a barbacoa taco. THIS is what a barbacoa taco should look like and what you should pay for. There are places around town, either substituting pulled brisket or serving small amounts, charging ridiculously prices and passing them off to you as a "barbacoa taco". Send. It. Back. I was very pleased with the portion sizes here and took half of my enchiladas home with me. They tasted great and I enjoyed everything on my plate. The chips tasted fresh, but I was not a fan of the salsa, it was too crunchy for my liking. When I was seated a live band was playing some Beatles music which was fun to listen to. I've passed this place many times and the parking lot is usually completely full around lunchtime. I had a sneaking suspicion this place was a great value and the locals knew it. After reading many of the reviews I can see why they are so well liked. My wife and I decided to finally try this place well after the lunch rush in the middle of the week. We were quickly lead to a table and chips and fresh salsa along with a big glasss of water were close behind. Because this is Covid time, we had to download the menu on our phone. we kept our menu choices fairly simple, but they do have some better items to offer. Our waitress was very friendly and she did not even need to write down our order since it appears she keeps the menu in her head. I had one large frozen margarita and I can honestly say it still had some relaxing effect on me after I got home. The food itself it's just your basic Tex-Mex, however, we made Tex-Mex choices but some other items may well be different. The food arrived on these large very hot plates. The rice and refried beans were decent but nothing really special. My beef enchiladas and my wife's Migas were quite good. And both dishes came with freshly made hot tortillas. What it boils down to is you get an incredible amount of food for an extremely reasonable price and the margaritas are great. Definitely worth a return visit. read more

We pulled into this place, starving, driving from the airport to the Air bnb. For a Wednesday afternoon, there was a pretty good crowd. Our server was originally attentive, but when we asked for more time to decide, she didn't come back until I flagged her down. The food was good. I got shrimp enchilada. The serving was generous. The shrimp werte tiny in size but plentiful. I got shrimp in every bite. It was obviously prepared fresh. The rice was clumpy. The refried beans were refried beans. Overall, the food was good. I've been begging my gf to try this place. I've been underwhelmed by Rio Grande's asada. I never get to pick a restaurant again. When we sat, chips and salsa came to the table. It was the most watery slasa I've ever had. It was also the best part of the meal. Next were drinks. My girlfriend got a margarita. The house mixologist made an homage to the earliest cocktails. The ones that existed before ice and fresh limes were available year round. Back when your only option was room temperature Costco marg mix. We ordered queso. Now I enjoy Velveeta on occasion, it has its place. Put some rotel in it and it's passable pot luck cheese dip. But a bowl of moderately melted, unadulterated, Sysco brand industrial cheese product is not what I'm looking for from a Mexican restaurant in Texas. Another reviewer was wowed by the single slice of pickled jalapeno that tops this insult to cheese.. I sincerely hope they try a second restaurant one day. I got steak fajitas. They were completely unseasoned and cooked down to shoe leather. This was the first time in my life I've left meat on my plate. The guac on the side was fine, it was made with those new water injected avocados, I think. To accomplish a vegetarian enchilada my gf requested the meat gravy that comes on them normally be subbed for queso (before the bowl of it came to put the kibosh on that idea). So we can't complain that much, but she said a more solid version of the queso lived inside them. I'm absolutely baffled by the positive reviews of this place. I moved to Austin from Kansas a decade ago and I've never encountered worse tex mex in either place. I like this place. If you look at the other reviews, you will see some people agree with me and some people don't. The food I got was outstanding. For me, the negatives of this place have nothing to do with the food, Which is fine. The problem is the decorating. The room I was in - the West Room - Has the ugliest ceiling of any Mexican restaurant on the planet. It is a blown on insulation ceiling - not asbestos - but like the asbestos that used to be blown on to everything. Right now it looks like the entire ceiling has cancer. Big huge grey globular growths everywhere. I had my meal trying to keep my eyes on the television sets and thinking "Don't Look at the Ceiling. Don't Look at the Ceiling". Which of course meant I stared at the ceiling the whole time. I stared at that ceiling the way I usually stare at people who are not wearing enough clothes. But it was a lot less fun. * * * The food on the table, however, was absolutely first rate. The star of the show was a beef fajita nachos. I once ate at a Mexican restaurant in France - where the French chef thought nachos were some kind of canape. So he constructed each chip individually and decorated each with a geometric pattern. Well actually El Rincon, which has impeccable Mexican credentials, build their nachos the same way. Rather than just take a stack of chips and dump a stack of stuff on them, They took each individual chip, gave it its own individual coverage of refried beans and then added individual custom designed rations of fajita meat to each one, along with individual rations of cheese. They then melted the construction. Jalapenos and guac and salsa and shredded cheese and all the rest were dumped in the middle after melting to allocate among the nachos as I chose. Each individual nacho was its own work of art. Better yet, the underlying fajitas were first rate. I have not had nachos this good in some time. The salsa that came as chips and dip also commanded respect. A little more jalapeno-y than I like - but an honest credible and distinctive salsa worthy of note. * * * You will see from the other reviews that not every dish at El Rincon is marvelous. My horchata (which I am sure was outsourced from some standard place) was not that great. So I can see how one could get unlucky here. What is good is very good however. So I would have no problem Coming back here, rolling the dice a few times and seeing what comes up. I will have to make a point however not to look at the ceiling. We normally come to El Rincon for the menudo, tonight we came for dinner and drinks. Tonight was disappointing, I will not be returning. I ordered the shrimp Chile Relleno & a Mexican martini highly disappointed with both. The Relleno tasted like a bag of small frozen shrimp that had no flavor & the martini says it comes with Jose Cuervo but actually comes with their wells tequila which is toro which is absolutely disgusting couldn't even finish my drink. This is a pretty authentic local restaurant. There were things I liked and things that weren't great. I had the tortilla soup and the El Rincon Enchiladas. The tortilla soup is a meal in and of itself! It was really good and comes with a plate of accoutrements: rice, cheese, avocado, chips, and pico de gallo. It almost filled me up and I'm a big guy and was really hungry. It had one big piece of chicken in it that I had to take out and cut up, and I also had to trim some fat off. But it was tasty. I got one of each kind of enchilada: chicken, beef, and cheese. I think the beef was my favorite but it just had a little more flavor than the others. They weren't bad, just bland to me. I added salt, pepper, and salsa and that helped. Still kind of meh and my friend tried mine and agreed. I'd rather have to add salt than have it oversalted though. I asked for charro beans but got refried, she acted like they might not have them when I ordered and I didn't feel like sending them back. The chips and salsa were good. Their chips were thick and salty and tasted good. The salsa had good flavor and just enough zing. This is one of the things I judge a Mexican restaurant on and they definitely passed in this arena. My friend had barbacoa tacos and menudo. The barbacoa was GOOD, not greasy or fatty and great flavor and good portions. The menudo was OK (if you like menudo), it had some kick to it. The service was good, not great, we had to wait on our drinks a while but after that it was fine. I would eat here again and get the barbacoa next time. read more

I've been wanting to check out El Rincon for a while now because the majority of the time when we drive by this place is always has a full parking lot so you'd think this spot had some good food but I am sad to report this is not the case when I finally came to check it out. I ordered the puffy chicken tacos & the puffy tacos were very dough-y & tasted like grease..so much so I really couldn't taste my chicken inside the taco so in the end I just ate the chicken separately. The flour tortillas were not that great either & I'm a flour tortilla freak so I was disappointed about the tortillas but I'm happy to report that the rice, beans, & salsa were really yummy. My husband ordered the carne guisada plate & his food was really good..I was kinda jealous he got the good food! I did order a frozen strawberry margarita but it was not really frozen..it was more runny then frozen. Our service was "eh" at best..it wasn't very busy at all while we were there & we had to wait a while for our waters & chips to be refilled...no bueno! I did like the indoor patio area so I was disappointed that our food & drink didn't make the cut. To sum it up no I don't recommend El Rincon if you're craving Mexican food & I seriously doubt I'll be returning. Not real sure what happened but we got takeout with grub hub last night and the food was DISGUSTING! The beans were like water and no one ate them. My friend and I ordered our two kids a kids meal and after that the server never came back and took my order. 40 minutes later I was asking where the kids meals were. The server mentions he forgot to tell us they were out of corn dogs. So my friend orders her kid another meal but I'm still wondering where my kids meal is. And I still didn't even get to order. At that point I didn't even want to because I didn't want to be stuck there another two hours waiting for my meal. 15 more minutes goes by and still no food for the kids!! We stopped in for lunch and was impressed. I got the Monterey chicken since that was the most keto option i could get. Well the only keto plate i could get. I put the rice and beans on a separate plate so my nephew could eat. I mean hey not paying extra to get him some food when I'm not going to eat it right? Lol it was really good.
