I've been to other locations of El Rey before. The one closer to my side of town closed around COVID I think so it's been awhile. I saw this one leaving Lowe's and figured I could go for a cantaloupe juice. The drive thru lane is pretty hidden. It's behind the building so just know it's there and it exists. I also added a small tortilla soup. I'm still cringing at the price but inflation personally victimizing me daily is just the norm now. The soup looked like a small amount but had a lot of chicken in it. I would have liked more avocado and corn in there as well but overall the flavor was really nice. They also served the tortilla strips in a separate container so you can add them in when you're ready and they don't get soggy. I deducted a star for the cantaloupe juice surprisingly. The whole reason why I went and it was super disappointing. It tastes like a ton of sugar was added, which was really unnecessary since cantaloupe is already naturally sweet. read more

Pretty good Cuban/ Mexican cuisine at this restaurant. I was hoping for a little more tenderness and juiciness of the carnita for my tacos, I used Salsa and that was sufficient. Baby it's cold outside! And that calls for soup. Chicken tortilla soup to be exact. I have heard about how good El Rey's chicken tortilla soup was so I had to try it. I ordered the small one. It was almost $9 with tax. At first glance, I thought it was on the small side, however, it filled me up perfectly. They placed the tortillas strips separately. So no sogginess. At first I thought, mewwww, but then the more I ate, the more it grew on me. It had corn and some other small veggies. The chicken pieces were there and they were tender but I feel that they could have been more flavorful. Overall, soup was good, however nowhere near the best chicken tortilla soup I have had. What does a customer need to do in order to receive a correct order? I pay for cheese and or avocado online and pay an extra charge and this is the 3rd time my pick up order has neither. They are difficult to deal with on the phone and the portions are so small now it is very discouraging. If they do not fix these types of issues--it will NOT survive in this area. read more

Out for lunch with the wifey after church and we ended up here. Our friends said "you have got to try the chicken torta!" So guess what I tried? The chicken torta. It was delicious, I will definitely be coming back for lunch to get another, it was as good as advertised! You would think that staff that work a restaurant would know how to get an order correct. I literally ordered 3 Mexican tacos on Uber eats to my hotel..... Mexican tacos! Supposed to come with onions, tomatoes and jalapeños. But nope, lazy staff just didn't care to get the order correct so instead I was sent 3 tacos with eggs whites and potatoes. Granted, I did add potatoes and egg whites to my taco but never did I remove the onions, tomatoes and jalapeños. Also, y'all need to use seasoning!!! Bland a$$ tacos. DO BETTER!!! I like the food here but bathroom and service is still lacking. I stood at the counter waiting to order for a while. The guy at drive through said he would be with me later. He didn't help and 2 other ladies came to the counter and saw me but didn't help. Went to the bathroom to wash hands...still no paper towels or door with foot openers. Went back out and stood there to wait to be helped again with the lady still just standing at the counter. I was about to leave and go to Panda Express or Mods Pizza but decided to ask her is she could take my order. She finally looked at me so I went and ordered. There's lots of workers here and they look so unhappy like they do not want to take orders. Management probably could do with less staff and hire people who actually have customer service skills. Not sure why I come back here for tacos. Convenience and I do like their tacos...and the fact that they are next to Share Tea. Firstly, their cantaloupe juice is my fave! It's so good, I'll trek across town from West U for it! They may have very well just put a cantaloupe into a blender, but isn't that how things should be? Idk, maybe it's fake lol, but it sure tastes good! I love their menu items and the guys work hard back there to make it delicious! El Rey bunker hill sold me BAD PORK Cuban sandwich and I got food poisoning!!! I cannot explain how SICK this place made me. I thought I might die from dehydration, vomiting and diarrhea! it was AWFUL. I was up all night with chills and sweats alternating as I threw up in my trash can while sitting on the toilet. BLAND is the best way to describe El Rey. Very disappointed with the taste of the breakfast burrito, even after adding their green salsa. The quality doesn't match the prices. My Café latte was about 4-5 ounces and served lukewarm. Minimum condiments available on the self serve counter. Burrito was serve in a basket with no sauces; I had to go back to the counter and ask for salsa. I requested their hottest sauce, which I was told was their green sauce and she gave me one small container (about a tablespoon) the I had to ask for more. The sauce was bland and no heat, didn't do much for the burrito. To be honest, I'd have been been better off at McDonalds with their breakfast burrito at less than half the price. Too many good mom and pop Mexican restaurants in the area to settle for El Rey. 7 Taco a mile or so away on Long Point at Campbell is MUCH better and they have true Mexican flavors. read more

The food is good I definitely prefer taco trucks but there aren't many taco trucks near me so I go here for quick fix for tacos. I usually order the el pastor tacos, since el pastor is my favorite meat to get. They have plantains on the side that you can order and they're pretty good! The portions they give for chips is good as well. They give a red and green sauce to dip. This visit I went with my dad and ordered a plate. I got steak and the meat was dry, I had to add sauce to make up for the dryness. The portions are good! I ate all of my food and was satisfied. This El Rey location is on my way home and I stop by a couple of times a month to pick up dinner. Locations vary and this one is generally good though I'm learning that what you order matters a lot. I'm a big fan of the tortilla soup - flavorful, abundant tender chicken, a little heat - for example, and get tacos a little less frequently. Many tacos are good but I'll avoid the rotisserie chicken from here on out. Every bite of my recent rotisserie chicken tacos had bits of bones and cartilage intermixed with the meat. I normally really like this restaurant. I went the other day for lunch spent 66.00 dollars of food and left a generous tip. I got three large burritos with steak and a large soup and flan. My burrito had little to no meat, I asked another person later how was it and if it had meat in there, they said not much. Since I did not see it, I really can not say. Basically I eat a rice burrito. I called them the next day spoke to Juan who is a manager, and I said no meat and would like a replacement for mine. He said I should I brought it back, seriously, I ate it, I had no time. He spoke to his general manager on phone and they said nothing they can do. One burrito made right would of saved a customer, but such the lack of customer service and doubting my complaint. I am not sure I will be back. We come here for the breakfast burritos. They are huge and taste really good. Here's my only complaint. You ever ate a burrito and only got one element of the burrito? For example: You took a bite and got all cheese and nothing else? Or took a bite and got all bacon? That is sooooo annoying. I ordered a burrito for a reason, if I wanted to eat everything separately I'd order a breakfast plate. Please equally distribute the elements of the burrito. One half was all eggs and beans. Do not understand why their DT is so slow, every single time you go it takes a long time to get your food, I don't even know if they take this long inside as I try to avoid coming here as much as I can.
