My wife has us on a quest for the best Chile Rellenos, and I love checking out small mom and pop restaurants. El Rancherito lives up to its reviews. We ordered the #6 and #7 to sample their Rellenos, tamale, and chicharone burrito. Everything was clearly prepared using traditional family recipes. I use beans and rice as a benchmark for Mexican restaurants. Rice and refried beans here were not overly seasoned....very simply prepared but still satisfying. The richness of the refried beans really made the chicharone burrito. Crispy Rellenos were the wrapped variety and filled with a a yellow cheese mix. My wife thought the Rellenos were very good, though she prefers a crispy batter fried. She did say the Chile itself had a wonderful flavor. The tamale was moist with a very good beef filling. Enchilada initially looked like it was missing from the combo plate; when found it was the standard fare. Service is warm, friendly and very fast. It is that family, home feeling, coupled with good food, that makes El Rancherito such an enjoyable place. read more

Was in the area running some errands the first time I decided to stop by for a breakfast burrito. It has an old town feel of it on the outside. The inside was cleaner than expected. The staff was kind & helpful with reccomendations. The breakfast burrito was actually pretty good despite not having my preferred mix of spices. On my second visit, I decided to try some carne asada tacos as well as a bean burrito. I'm not a fan of smothered burritos. But if that's your thing, you'll probably enjoy these. The steak was a little more well done than normally I like, but the flavor was delightful. The salsas they offered fit the flavors of their menu items well. My one complaint was that the restroom could have been cleaner. It was quite busy at the the time of my visit, which may have contributed to that. I had a day off, so pretty much I just started driving, and I ended up feeling hungry. Since Federal Blvd. is known for having a great selection of Mexican eateries, I decided to try my luck. So I stopped by El Rancherito. A quiet place with some faithful returning customers, I found out. I ordered the Carne Adobada plate, which is supposed to be marinated pork steak. And when you say marinated, the process takes days, not overnight. Anyways, I was excited to try that food. Food came in after the two customers from the next table got their and they arrived several minutes after me. That's ok, no hard feelings for the flaw. The Carne Adobada comes in, and I immediately noticed that the beef was not marinated, but just "drenched" in some sort of palid-red sauce. Ok. Here's my challenge, let's try it. There was no seasoning in the meat whatsoever, it was just cooked but no traces of spices. I tried the sauce, more tomato-like flavor than red chili sauce. Definitely I couldn't eat the thing, so I asked about and the waitress said that their version of the Carne Adobada is actually pork chop with sauce on top of it. But she offered to replace the food with whatever else, so I ordered the Tacos of Suadero. They came in but still, it was just cooked meat but too bland flavors. They were served in three corn tortillas, a bunch of the meat and that's it. They were edible but really did not work for me. Now this is where the experience gets more interesting. As the waitress is going back and forth from the kitchen to the tables, she's having a bad arguments with the cook. The cook didn't care for keeping the level of voice low, he went just on and on insulting the waitress, calling her stupid. Not sure if both are brother/sister but that was completely ridiculous. Especially a guy insulting the girl. A big NO-NO. I heard the guy saying that she was jealous because he was still living with his parents? So proud of being a free-loader? Anyways, this completely topped up the bad experience. I previously read some other reviews, and I guess, they were lucky that the jack-ass cook wasn't in there, because they talk about great flavors, and the only great thing about that cook is his porky mouth. These guys are in the habit of overcharging customers. They tried to charge me $36 for a dozen tamales, but the price was actually $14. I stopped here one morning after my usual overnight work for one major reason: BEER. Not many restaurants offer beer at 8 in the morning, and a beer sounded really good to me. The restaurant is right on my way home, so I pulled in. The menu is extensive, and the menu photos all look great. I was excited to be trying the place. I ordered a beef chimichanga, partly because my usual breakfast place doesn't serve that item. The chimi comes smothered in chile plus guacamole and sour cream, lettuce, and tomato, with sides of rice and beans. My reaction was definitely meh, although I did finish it. The refried beans were thin, almost watery. The rice tasted unseasoned, plus it had something I hate -- frozen peas and carrots. Why do so many Mexican and Asian restaurants think we'll be turned on by frozen peas and carrots mixed into their cuisine? Yuck. To make matters worse, the peas were all shriveled; but I was going to remove them anyway, so no loss. Oddly, the rice and beans tasted okay when mixed together, although each individually was not at all appealing. The chimi was okay, fried but not too crisp. I was glad it wasn't greasy. The filling was...okay. It was that ground beef they use to fill ground-beef tacos (for gringos). The chile was fine, as was the guacamole (except for the bite that was full of avocado peel). The service was okay, the place is clean, and the chile and Rhondita's positive experiences mean I will give it another try or two and see if my rating goes up. I sincerely hope so. read more

Not impressed. Got the steak fajita, asked for no jalapeño or red pepper, add mushrooms. Got a fajita swimming in red pepper, no mushrooms to be seen. The meat was stringy and tough. I have to say theirs are excellent and at about $3 each are a great value. The chili tastes homemade, not off a Sysco truck. Sometimes there is a wait but they are not pre-made. Just good authentic Mexican food. I had to try it for lunch with my wife. Our lunch was very good & a great Margherita. I work in the neighborhood and I'm used to the area. Going back to the food, I really loved their enchilada sauce, green chili and our waitress was great, very personable. This will be a regular.
