We were there just for the ice cream which was delicious! They have a lot of options ( see my picture). Some of them are really creamy while others are more like frozen fruit purée. I had one sample of what turned out to be egg nog flavor. I settled on the mango and the lemon in a cone. It was great! Reasonably priced. I would definitely recommend it. I love this little store. It's like stumbling into a Mercado in Oaxaca. They have a wonderful selection of Hispanic foods as well as home made tamales , fresh warm tortillas , and a huge selection of home made ice cream. My very favorite treat there, is their fabulous Elote- Mexican street corn. It's also worth noting , in a neighborhood that could easily be defined as a food desert , that El Puerto Azteca offers a nice variety of fresh local produce to a population who may not have a lot of other options. Great place to get your ingredients for Mexican food plus they have a little restaurant in the back. Mexican Ice cream too!!! The restaurant in the back has the closest to 'Authentic Mexican' I've found around here. Small menu but the tortillas are fresh and the meat soooo flavorful. Love the Lengua! El Puerto Azteca is a grocery store, prepared foods hotbar, deli counter, ice cream parlor, cowboy boot shop, and variety goods discount store, all with three gambling monitor units and a dining room in the back. They sell a little of everything. As a latin market, they have a huge variety of groceries for hispanic cooking, and the bakery section had a ton of authentic options (see my pics). Puerto Azteca came on my radar from a Yelp search for ice cream, and I was very pleased with their cold cases filled with latin gelato and frozen popsicles. Not only were the colors beautiful, but the fruit, nut, chocolate, dulce, etc. flavors were just absolutely fresh and high quality. Completely spot on for anything I was craving, and the fruit ones were beyond my wildest dreams, seriously, like the freshest fruit blended in there. Simply outstanding flavors. I stayed on Jekyll, so Puerto Azteca was a bit of a hike for me, but I visited twice, and definitely would've gone more if I'd found them earlier in my trip. Absolutely worth the drive for sweets and stellar baked goods. Wish I'd gotten a chance to explore more, like the hot bar foods. I hope to return a lot when I'm in the area again! read more

A hidden gem, their food has all the great flavors of the best Mexican street food. Their staff is friendly and the food is individually cooked to me order. You can actually see mama cooking in the kitchen. Anytime you're in the area, this is a must taste destination. Since my last visit, they've added a homemade gelato bar and homemade ice cream bars. Hole-in-the-wall inside of a small, Mexican grocery/meat store. Space: Barebones with seven tables that can seat four people each. Service: Very friendly. Took about 20 min for chicken burrito and two chicken tacos, even though there was only one other table when I ordered. Food: Chicken burrito -- had good flavor. Rice, tomato, chicken, lettuce, and jalapeño with a toasted crisply tortilla. Overall solid but nothing noteworthy, and I wish it was a little bigger for the price. Chicken taco -- was overall ... dry. Had to really doctor it up with the salsa, lime, and cilantro/onion. Overall a letdown. Final verdict: 1. I may have come on an off day. 2. It seems like an authentic spot; I was the only non-Spanish speaker at the restaurant. 3. I paid $10 for two chicken tacos and a chicken burrito, but I left feeling not 100% full (I have a male college student-sized appetitive). 4. Authentic as you can get, I had a little trouble trying to find this place because this is literally a "hole in the wall". Came in on a Friday it looks like a convenient store but the actual restaurant is in the back (so you end up paying for your food when you leave at the register). The dine in is a little small has 8 tables with about 4 chairs each. The tacos are authentic and delicious (a little cheaper than the average price $1.50 for just meat) the burritos are hearty and only $6.00. You can help yourself to the soda in the fridge but make sure you pay for it when you leave (integrity check). On Saturdays they do a BBQ chicken grill, a whole chicken for $10.00 not to bad. I would definitely come back friendly staff and great experience plus if you need a few snacks or looking for some south of the boarder ingredients they have more than you need. This place is a hidden Gem in downtown brunswick! We have tried the carne asada burrito and taco, al pastor burrito, torta taco and their quesadillas! This is the most authentic Mexican food you can get in town! There is one cook and your food is brought out hot as she finishes it. Hidden in the back of a small Mexican Bodega in a nondescript old shopping center on Norwich Street is this gem of a taqueria. It is nothing fancy, but the food is delicious and the prices are practically in pesos. I love to pick up a quick chicken taco on the ride home. Their chicken taco has a very generous portion of chicken and comes with two hot sauces as well as a lime cilantro and onions. They have seating, that is pretty generic. I am from California transplanted to Brunswick and this place is authentic as it gets. This is a legit Mexican market and Carniseria with the added benefit of having a small taco stand and fresh made ice cream. There was a sign up in the taco stand for cash only but the market was taking credit cards. read more

Outstanding! Don't let the fact that it is hidden in the back a store fool you. The food is top notch and some of the best Mexican food we've had since living here. Even my picky kids loved it! Inexpensive Mexican with good options for customizing. Limes, onions, cilantro and a red sauce plus a green sauce. The tacos were great. The torta though huge, could have been less saucy and had more flavor. My guess is a different torta might have been better. Cannot be beat for the price. Family owned and operated food is prepared while you wait and is homemade. Prices are more than fair, very inexpensive for lunch or dinner.
