I had never heard of El Pollon before until I noticed one upon up near my house. If you are one of those people who wants a menu with a million things to pick from, you will be disappointed. I, however, love this new trend towards restaurants that specialize in one thing and do it incredibly well. I want a pizza place to make sure they make great pizza - not to add junk like subpar chicken wings, crappy dough with sugar thrown on it to pass as a "dessert" or other nonsense. El Pollon follows a pretty basic formula: they make chicken.... and they do it very, very well. The chicken is Peruvian style rotisserie chicken. It is well seasoned, juicy, and has nice crispy skin. You can get whole or half chickens, and you can also get a 1/4 of a chicken in either dark or white meat. They have a variety of sides, but I love the Peruvian fried rice and their black beans the best. The price is great too. You can get a 1/4 of a chicken and 2 sides for under $6 and fill up without breaking the bank.... and I usually have a good bit of rice and beans left over. Good to see another option in the sea of the usually big box, crappy fast food chains that usually pop up in this area. read more

My family and I often travel to New York and one of our required eats is Peruvian Chicken from Super Pollo. We no longer have to travel to get great chicken. I do wish they offered more Peruvian dishes as there are wonderful choices at other places. But they are off to a good start. Quite simply the BEST chicken for at least 45 minutes in any direction! We have been here multiple times, and it's always perfect! Juicy flavorful chicken that one craves over and over! The steak and cheese sandwich is also excellent, and is my go-to if I'm not really feeling chicken at the moment. The plantains are perfect, and the yuca is always excellent! I hate giving only two stars, but the description of "meh. I've experienced better" is pretty accurate. I'll be looking for an excuse to raise the rating! But right now, El Pollon, just isn't quite par with the stuff you get closer to the city (the city being DC or Baltimore). The chicken is decent, but in comparison to some of the other Peruvian chicken I've had, it's not particularly remarkable--not bad at all, just not great. The sides really need a bit of work though--quite bland and uninspired; they give you plenty, but it's a bit of a chore to get through when it just isn't flavorful. I'll definitely come back occasionally if I'm around Ranson, but if I'm really craving some great Peruvian chicken, I'll probably make a trip to Frederick. That said, El Pollon is relatively affordable, and probably a better option than the various fast food chains in the area. read more

I appreciate that a business like this has opened in our area as we could use more variety. With that being said, I have found that the quality of the chicken and the sides do not compare well to what is available closer in to DC. I will say that the chicken quality and side item quantities have increased since opening. And, at just under $15 for a whole chicken and 2 large sides it is a decent value. Given where we are, it is still worth a visit from time to time. To the person who said they had to go to NYC for Peruvian chicken, you could just head down the road to Sardi's in Frederick. In my opinion Sardi's is the standard that all other Peruvian chicken joints should be measured against. Bottom line: not great but the only place of its type in the Eastern Panhandle and worth a visit for that reason. read more

I love Peruvian chicken restaurants! I've been to several in Northern Virginia and Maryland and was excited to find one in the area. The atmosphere is very different because you don't see the chicken cooking. It doesn't feel as fresh because of that. The flavor of the chicken was good and the meat was moist. The sides aren't great. There are many reviews on here about the terrible rice, so I'm not sure why they don't fix it. It has no flavor and near-raw pieces that almost broke my fillings. The black beans were ok. Green beans were good. But at 4:30 on a Saturday they ran out of coleslaw and had no French fries or yuka ready to go. The family meals all come with soda, which I didn't want, but took. The server and cashier were very nice. It's not cheap. The prices are comparable to much better chains. read more

Looks like a typical shop in a strip center. The food is amazing, portions are huge and it's priced very in expensively. We drive 1 hour just to have lunch here. It's that good. I wasn't familiar with Peruvian food so it was confusing to order the first time but I've realized that everything is awesome. You can't go wrong with whatever you order. read more

There was old food all over the tables, place looked like it hadn't been cleaned in days. The doors and windows had about 1000 smudges and fingerprints on them, really gross. You order chicken (which they cut up in the back) and you get to choose some sad looking sides that are sitting in heaters up front. I choose the fried plantains and fried rice trying to play it safe, but nope it tasted like it had been sitting there for a week. I reiterate just gross, save your money. read more

The chicken is tender and delicious. A good selection of sides but as others have states, tasteless. Price is reasonable for the amount and quality of the food. One problem which is glaring and detracts from the overall experience is the bathroom. When I used the bathroom there was no hot water, or soap to wash your hands. No towels to dry your hands either. So ask yourself: how are the food preparers sanitizing their hands? I never understood why some eating establishments don't consider this an important consideration. Quite taken with the quality of the food! The pollo was very flavorful and juicy... not overdone, The Aji and mixed well with the Aji verde was quite tasty and went with everything. First time trying tomato and onion salad I was pleasantly surprised. The Platanos are sweet and moist. The fried Yuca was crispy and still tender on the inside without being dry. I was very disappointed in the food here--after reading all the good reviews on Yelp I was hoping to discover a hidden gem. We ordered a family meal, with chicken, yuca, mashed potatoes, corn, and mac and cheese. The chicken and sauces were good, but that was it. The corn was inedible (literally 3 people took a bite and had to spit it out)--it obviously had been out for a while, and we couldn't figure out if they poured a little vinegar on it or if it was rancid. The potatoes were meh, and one of my kid's said the gravy tasted "funky." The kids don't like the mac and cheese--it also appeared to not be fresh. We threw that out. The yuca, which we were really looking forward to was cut thick and so dry it was hard to swallow. Small selection of canned drinks to choose from for the meal. This place is absolutely amazing and is what I remember Peruvian food tasting like. My hubby and I tried another local Peruvian place in town and it does not compare to El Pollon. It had no flavor and service was so-so. The service at El Pollon was very inviting and friendly. The establishment was clean, portions were huge. My husband and I each ordered the Peruvian Burrito and an order of Plantains and we could have dealt with one burrito as the portions were huge. We highly recommend this place and are so happy to see more ethnic varieties coming to our small town so we do not have to travel to DC. read more

Great portion size and the fact the chicken is dark meat means it's free range not hormone fill chicken.Chicken is always moist, rice cooked to perfection. I really wish they would go full Peruvian and serve Cuy (guinea pig ) ,Anticuchos DeCorazon (grilled hearts ) or Criollo(duck).But I absolutely HATE wasting gas to go to northern Va or DC for some "fancy" chicken that is way over priced and not as good as this. The prices are dirt cheap the food is generous and I don't have to drive more than 6 mins for it. I recently went to Sardis in Fredrick and it's 3 times the price and just because they put traditional purvian sauce on greasy white meat chicken doesn't make it Purvian. A salad cost $7.00 They serve cheese stakes and other non purvian food at 16 and 17dollars a pop. I can get 3 fabulous free range great food for the price of one Sardis meal that's not good. El pallon will be my go to from now on Sardis was a very disappointing trip not worth the gas or drive to get there. read more
