We stopped into El Apollo Guapo a week or so ago to try the food, it was pretty good! We had a chicken meal with rice and fries, a build your own bowl, and the plantains. The chicken was really delicious. None of the fried things were too greasy. The rice fell a little flat, it seemed slightly dried out- maybe just the day we visited. Fond memories of the truck parked on Bartholomew Street at KnowGoodFood but those days are gone. Ordered the 1/4 chicken [dark] with plantains and roasted corn. The chicken was juicy and delicious as usual, the plantains were good [but was dreaming of tostones] and the corn was very sweet and filling. The lime aioli was super! This review is probably biased because El Pollo Guapo is easily our favorite fast casual restaurant and I'm just leaving this review because of their new location in Glastonbury. But if you're in the area and you've never heard of this place...you're welcome. Everything here is fantastic. The staff are the greatest people you'll ever meet and treat you like family even if the only reason you know them is from coming into their restaurant once a week (just ask Tony). You definitely want to try the queso...it's actually real queso not like what you're used to eating from a jar or from another place that rhymes with Poe's. The chickpeas are also insane. And their chips?! There's magic dust on them. Well..it's actually Tajin seasoning but the first time I ever tried it was here and now I buy it to put on my eggs in the morning (life-changing). The rice bowls are also a home run. I recommend the Arroz Con Pollo because it comes with plantains and they're just perfect. The garlic lime aioli also adds a hit to your tastebuds that will keep you coming back for more. We also tried the churros here for the first time and now it's become a problem that I'm seeking help for. Don't go anywhere else in Glastonbury now that Guapo has opened its doors. Been here many times. Never disappointed with the food choices, and the speed of service. Recommend trying the Guacamole that comes with the house chips with Cajun dressing, also the Tacos and bowls. The place has a simple setup with wooden tables and soft music playing. Although the food is delicious it is on a higher price bracket. I have been to the handsome chicken on the silas dean highway location before, and really enjoyed the chicken bowls they offered. Problem was that they were quite a bit a ways away, so I didn't frequent their locale for a while. When I learned there was a closer place, I had to order from them and get me some chicken fat potatoes. I am glad to report, they are as good as I remember. They are set up for to-go, which is good due to COVID. I ordered a Barely Legal bowl with some chicken fat potatoes and a couple of tacos with sweet potato wedges. The cook staff got the food up and ready in no time and was in and out in seconds. The food, so very tasty! The Barely Legal bowl has these pickled red onions and sriracha aioli with avacado, rotisserie chicken and other things piled onto a bowl of well seasoned rice. Each piece is tasty, but combined makes for a awesome flavor combo. I also really love their chicken fat potatoes. not too greasy, but little potato chucks with deep chicken flavor. Love those potatoes. The chicken tacos were tasty as well. The spicy one had the best flavor, a strong kick of heat but not incredibly hot. Enough to clear your sinuses but not enough to go for the milk. The guapo taco was not as great, but still fairly tasty. This place is awesome, and just as good as I remember. The only gripe I have is there is a lot of good food places in the area. So it's tough to figure out which one to go to! If you want to try some interesting chicken bowls or get some awesome potatoes, give these guys a shot! read more

Never heard of this place before and it's a little farther down the strip of main shops, but the name holds true about their chicken. They make everything themselves, the chips are house fried and the queso is made fresh and seasoned deliciously. The guacomole is also very fresh and given in large portions make it okay to take huge scoops. The half chicken is big and easily will fill two people's stomachs, great tasting and very juicy. The potato wedges are thick and fried perfectly, comes with a great sauce too. Brussel sprouts have been appearing as side or appetizer everywhere, they hold up here and are worth picking if you're between different options. My first encounter with El Pollo Guapo was at their location in Hartford. I was excited to hear they opened up another location in Glastonbury and decided to stop in! The food is just as delicious and now half the distance from my house! I'm a huge fan of the Almost Legal rice bowl and always go for extra pickled onions and fried plantains. If you like chicken, rice, lettuce, tomato, corn all together, then definitely get the rice bowls. They also offer different amounts of chicken and sides. I got take out from the Glastonbury location a few months ago. I ordered everything online and it was ready in like 20 min. No contact, just walked inside and my food was ready to go in a paper bag. The food here is very flavorful! We've gotten food from here many times. When you get take out, you walk in and there is a big counter that you pay and get your food. We usually get Arroz Con Pollo Rice Bowl, Dazed and Confused Rice Bowl, and we got Almost Legal Rice Bowl. Arroz Con Pollo is very good, the chicken is tasty and so are all the flavors of the slaw, guacamole, and rice. There are also plantains in it which are yummy. You can ask for only white meat if you want. The Dazed and Confused Bowl is good too, the Brussels sprouts and corn are nice and it's super flavorful. I had a bowl with rotisserie chicken, spicy slaw, avocado, sweet plantains, pickled onion, sriracha aioli, pico, grilled corn and queso fresco. It was delicious, fresh and flavorful. The aioli ads a nice amount of heat, but it's not overpowering. If you like want a little adventure, this is for you. It's definitely suited for a more refined palate. read more

The Brussels sprouts are REALLY good and don't sleep on the Caramel Apple Empanadas! If I had one constructive criticism it that they should have some better seating options for people who have hip/leg issues. My Mom (who was some severe lower extremity health issues) loved the food, but had a hard time getting comfortable in the metal chairs they use (I found them to be comfortable). Recommended by a co-worker. The chicken, taken on its own, is excellent. Kind of a smoky taste, and very juicy and tender (I ordered the 1/4 chicken, white meat, which comes with "Handsome rice" and one side). Broccoli side was wonderfully garlicky, also Brussels sprouts were quite savory. Handsome rice, not so much. Rice with peas, very bland. Fails: the throbbing, overly loud techno-rap music, ugh. Couldn't wait to get out of there. Also, they make a lot of noise about their sauces, the two of which I sampled (chimichurri and sweet vinegar) were straight-up terrible. I honestly thought they had made a kitchen mistake with the chimichurri, which is normally, in Argentinian cuisine, a nice tangy spicy thick sauce. El Pollo Guapo's "chimichurri" sauce is basically cilantro and parsley floating around in flavorless oil, yuck! I am not opposed to oil-based sauces in general, but this had a very oily mouth-feel, and the chicken doesn't really need it. When I mentioned this to the server, she very generously brought me the sweet vinegar sauce, but...not a fan of this one either. Just not a cohesive sauce. Ordered take out one night, ordered online and pick-up was easy although you have to go inside to the counter to get your bag (as opposed to picking up from a table by the door). It is contactless, though, which I like. I ordered the quarter chicken dark plate. The chicken was fresh and very moist. The chimichurri sauce (there is a choice of sauces) was amazing, great flavor, lots of garlic and herbs. I had to reduce my rating by 1 star, though, because the plantains and rice I ordered were both hard and cold. My order was about 7:30-8pm, and these sides tasted like they had been sitting in a chafing dish all day. I may not order sides next time as they are not worth it. read more
