Charming little Mexican family owned joint. Scored a SaveNowCT discount pass for half off. I've driven by the place a hundred times and heard it was surprisingly great food. Chips and salsa were a nice starter, along with a near freezing can of Tecate beer which I've always wanted to try after seeing it advertised all over boxing matches. I ordered the vegetarian platter which included refried beans, rice, enchiladas, burrito and cheese quesadilla. All equally delish. Dessert was coconut flan with whipped cream and chocolate sauce. Sorry to say, the food was quite greasy. The flautas were literally dripping oil, and over cooked, stuffed with so much cheese, we just couldn't eat them. The tablesauce was a watered down chile de arbol salsa. The carnitas were dry which made for a bad taco, and dripping with grease. The tortillas were dry and stiff, probably due to the brand they use, which I saw in the reach in cooler. That would be preference though as some people may enjoy a firmer more durable tortilla. On a good note, the rice and beans were tasty, and the guacamole was really great, saving this restaurant from a one star review. But I can make it better at home, so I have no reason to return. So Good. So freaking good. Being from the west coast, I love Mexican food. It's a small hidden gem in Plainville. It took me a few years of living in Plainville to get here, but now that I have, I'm hooked. On Friday and Saturday they offer a free house margarita with any entree purchase. Can't beat that!!!I had the flautas Mexicana which was basically thicker taquitos with mole sauce with rice and beans. Believe me I scooped up every bit of the sauce it was that good. Absolutely love this place, it's probably my all around favorite restaurant. The prices are low and the portions are large. I've never had anything there that wasn't delicious, but my favorite is the flautas with chorizo (may not be an option on the menu, but they'll definitely make it) with the red sauce. The nachos al pastor (al pastor - tender pork bits w/ pineapple, crazy delicious) are another big time favorite. On a whim I actually tried the not so mexican buffalo chicken wrap once, and it was delicious. The atmosphere is as to be expected for a nice authentic mexican hole in the wall, which isn't for everyone, but I love it. I've had only the slightest bit of language barrier trouble once or twice (and I've been there countless times), but the staff has always been extremely friendly and helpful. Bottom line, if you like good mexican and are in the area you should make a stop here. If you don't like the sit in area, do take out, but get to it fast to prevent sogginess. The grocery area has a lot of interesting items to check out while waiting for your order. They also have all sorts of crazy mexican sodas with flavors that I didn't know existed. This place is a little hard to find, even though it is smack dab in the middle of Plainville. For one thing, it's a storefront two doors down from a bodega that has much flashier signage. Make sure you go into the restaurant. The parking is also tricky. If you're on E. Main St, there is a pair of rutted gravel driveways. One leads to a loading dock; the other does lead to the parking lot, but you might leave a hubcap or a passenger behind. If you approach from Maple, which runs off Whiting and is more or less parallel to E. Main, you have a clear entrance to a large lot. There's a walkway from the parking lot to Whiting St. It isn't next door to the restaurant, it's in the middle of the block, but we're not talking about a hike. The food is very good. Just remember that, despite the name of the place, it isn't Tex-Mex, it's Mexican. I don't know the different regions very well, but the menu refers to Oaxaca and that's in the southwest of Mexico. Most Latin American regions use the same names to refer to different foods, so an empanada from Columbia is going to be different from an empanada from Mexico or a panada from Indonesia. Just keep an open mind. I don't usually bother to read a menu before going out, but I wish I had. I spent a lot of time making up my mind. The menu is extensive, and ranges from platters to build-your-own taco or torta. Everything my wife and I tried was good, including the coconut flan. If you're a margarita fan, you'll find a list of the usual and a few unusual suspects. read more

I ordered Aztec enchiladas. Enchiladas are typically corn tortillas rolled around a filling. I was served corn tortillas that were folder over with no filling covered with mole and two slabs of 1/8" slices of beef laid on top. Am I missing something? Perhaps some enchiladas. I grew up near El Paso, Texas. I also lived in Austin and Los Angeles. I know Mexican food, it's part of my DNA. This was the only place I could go to for really good, authentic food. The portions are generous especially for their reasonable prices. I noticed a big group next to me last time had called in their orders early. The waitress had their table all set and the food came out right away... Very cool for those who have strict lunch times. This is a "hole in the wall" place you should check out. Stopped here for take-out on our way home from vacation. Out-of-the-way for us but worth it! Two things stood out as good signs right when we got there: it's in an unassuming location, practically "hole-in-the-wall", & the woman behind the counter spoke fluent Spanish but knew enough English to take our order. My kids got the kids cheese casadillas, I got the vegetarian casadillas, & my husband got a burrito. The kids cheese casadillas came with sour cream, shredded lettuce, rice & beans. My meal & my husbands came with guacamole & salsa - best not-hot salsa EVER!! As well as rice & beans. My husband loved the burrito. I wasn't crazy about my vegetarian casadillas. The vegetables were a green bean, pea, carrot mix that'd clearly come from the can or the freezer. That was odd. Every veg casadillas I've ever had has had some combination of the following: refried beans, black beans, onions, peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, yellow summer squash, olives, shredded carrot... So the green bean-pea-carrot mix frozen or from a can in butter sauce was pretty odd. But the mild but flavorful salsa totally made up for it. If we're ever close to Plainville, CT again I'm sure we'll stop by again. I'll just try something else, as long as it comes with the salsa! read more

"El Paso" has great food in a setting that is unpretentious to a fault. If you're looking for a fancy restaurant, try this some other time BUT if you want excellent Mexican food and a nice, varied menu of both favorites and off-the-beaten-path specialties at very reasonable prices, you should definitely check this place out! Don't be put off by the hole-in-the-wall appearance, you will have great meal here! The staff speaks English well but be sure that your order is clearly understood because mixups can and do occur. Holy guacamole, very good, very authentic. I had the chicken tacos a few weeks back and they were good, great flavor. Today I tried the beef fajita wrap. Really flavorful, and the wrap was a good size, did not leave me hungry. It comes with fries or a salad, I ordered fries and got a salad instead no big deal, it was a nice fresh salad which even had Avocado slices. Did not bring any dressing which was a downfall.
