Celebrated an anniversary at El Monumento on Oct. 26. Sat on the back patio and the weather was perfect. Unfortunately, there were a few snags, most of which are easily fixable. We arrived around 1:40 p.m. and were seated with only a couple of minutes' wait time. The hostess gave us regular menus; I asked if we were too late to order from the brunch menu; she then brought a brunch menu to us. There were five in our party, but we only got one brunch menu. Okay, no problem, we can pass it around, but five people, having our own menus would have been more appropriate.
We ordered four waters and one iced tea, which were brought fairly quickly with the chips and salsa. Especially liked the warm salsa; it was fantastic. Chips were very good too. Ordered the queso flameado, four breakfast casseroles and one Mexican Benedict. At that point -- after we had the chips and salsa -- I asked for silverware, because we still didn't have any. The queso arrived with the plastic warmer that contained FOUR tortillas . . . even though there were FIVE of us at the table. Unfortunately, no small appetizer plates were brought, and the queso, which was very yummy, was also drippy with oil.
One menu for five people, having to ask for silverware, and then for no appetizer plates to be brought out with drippy queso is a failing grade in basic "Restaurant 101".
After the queso arrived, the manager came to our table and apologized that they were out of breakfast casserole and would those four people like to order something different . . . BUT she didn't bring any menus. Again, kind of an obvious oversight. By this point, it was probably 2:15 and we did arrive at the very end of the brunch serving time, so I didn't really consider the fact that they were out of the casserole to be a problem. We knew we were arriving late. After the manager repeated a couple of things on the brunch menu, those four people decided on their replacement orders.
At that point, our food actually arrived fairly quickly. I enjoyed the Mexican Benedict, and my sons enjoyed their huevos. Right after the food was brought to the table, the waiter refilled our water glasses; however, several minutes later, some of our glasses were empty and he never brought the water back to the table.
We decided to order dessert. Again, we did not receive a menu. One of the items was a fruit empanada; he said he "thought" it was strawberry. Well, by 2:30 in the afternoon, he should have known what flavor it was. We ordered two El Rey cakes, one flan, and one order of churros. I also asked for regular coffee (not with alcohol); he said they had French press coffee with 2 to 3 cups in each pot. (another thing for which it might have been nice to see on the menu, as well as the fact that we had no idea how much the desserts and coffee would cost. Most people would like to have an idea of what their final tab is going to be.)
After a few minutes, he came back to the table to say that the churros had not cooked properly and the kitchen would not serve them. My 11-year-old son had ordered the churros; he wouldn't care if they were "opened up" or not, but no churros. He decided on the chocolate cake and the waiter told us he would comp that dessert, which he did.
This is not to complain about our waiter. It was not his fault that the kitchen had run out of the breakfast casserole and the churros didn't cook correctly. The hostess who seated us could have easily brought both the lunch and brunch menus, and either she or the waiter could have ensured that silverware was on the table. The manager should have brought both menus back to us when she came to tell us the kitchen was out of the casserole.
The food was all delicious and the restaurant itself was lovely. Just some of the "logistical" issues need to be addressed. Menus, silverware and filled water glasses are accomplished every day by much cheaper chain restaurants; there's no reason these problems should exist in a unique restaurant such as El Monumento. I'd like to give it 2 1/2 stars, because the experience was somewhere between "Meh" and "A-OK."
By the way, I sent this review to the manager of the restaurant a few days after our visit and to date have not received a reply. One of the people in our party went back to the restaurant two days later; again, no silverware, but this time, the waiter left a whole PILE of menus on their table and they were seated in an area on the deck with no lighting; they used their phones to read the menu. read more
