After a relaxing Sunday drive through the countryside east of Georgetown, we were deciding on a place to stop and refresh ourselves and to get a light bite. We were early, and it was good timing on our part that the El Monumento parking lot was not yet full. We hadn't been in for a couple of months since it has been packed the last few times we happened by, but this afternoon, we walked right in and were seated immediately in a nice booth near the kitchen. (our favorite vantage point other than being out on the deck). Many changes are evident and there are many new faces, now wearing a slightly casual topper instead of black and whites with a necktie, but the number of smiling faces and greetings by all was a big positive.
We were promptly greeted by our server, and we ordered a favorite of ours, the Mexican Coffee which was a special blend of local roast coffee called El Mon with Espolon Blanco Tequila, Patron XO Cafe liqueur, heavy frothed cream, heavy simple syrup, and cinnamon, but it's now listed on the menu as French Press Coffee, which is served in a rather large Le Creuset Stoneware french press, which generously yields 5-6 cups of the coffee that is to be treasured. Our server brought the coffee service to our table and added a "brandy liqueur" to the french press after depressing the plunger. I sense that changes have been made, but the French Press coffee is as equally good as the Mexican coffee, but with some differences in taste.
While we sipped coffee and enjoyed the two different salsas(my fav is the roasted salsa served warm) and their chips, which are slightly thicker, and appear to be freshly made. I think these are better than those served at Gloria's. We ordered a couple of appetizers, the El Mon Tortita (Beef Picadillo in Bolilos) and the Gucamole with seasonal fruit, but the server came back and stated that they were "out" of the El Mon Tortita today (oft heard at Monument Cafe (sic), so we opted for the Quesadillas, which were wonderful! (adobo smoked chicken, roasted poblanos, cheese, and cilantro) It seemed like the poblanos were almost caramelized, which brought out such a savory sweet flavor.
We finished up by ordering a Tres Leche cake to share, which is normally huge (3"x8"), but today it was about half the size of prior visits, which is okay but it also didn't have the same texture and flavor as before. It was good but not great and I realize that there are many variables that can affect consistency of pastries, so hopefully it was an anomaly.
We live in Georgetown and have been eating at El Monumento since it opened and enjoy their take on interior latin food and their diverse menu. We don't mine change, which hopefully is being made to improve service and menu quality and not in order to adapt to challenges of staffing by lowering standards. We realize the continuing challenge of matching quality service with fine dining in Georgetown, and I don't mind paying $$$ menu prices, but I do expect formal attentive service in order to be a frequent diner.
El Monumento has the makings of being a destination restaurant, which it already largely is, but I think that more of a general manager type command presence is needed all the time to achieve consistency and to meet expectations. I'm a believer in this concept! read more
