I stumbled across this hidden gem of a Mexican restaurant and found it to be a culinary delight. The menu was full of interesting things that honestly grabbed my attention, but ultimately I selected the California burrito, loaded with steak, chicken, chorizo, shrimp, and mushrooms and covered in a cheese sauce and, since it was Taco Tuesday and they were offering 99 cent tacos, a beef taco. They brought me first the standard chips and salsa. The salsa served with the chips was good and they also brought me a hot salsa, which could have been hotter, but good nonetheless. Then the main event, my burrito and taco, were brought out in a fast manner.Let's start with the taco. It was a very Americanized taco with ground beef, lettuce, etc. Honestly, it was nothing special. The burrito on the other hand was very good. It was well prepared and good sized. Service was very good and I did note that they had margaritas on special that night (maybe next time). I will definitely return here and would recommend this to anyone seeking a way to satiate their Mexican food craving in this part of town.

I've been to this restaurant two times now - and 100% your order will guide the view of the restaurant. I recommend getting the molcajete - it's a large hot dish with a variety of meats (steak, ribs, chorizo, shrimp, and chicken) as well as vegetables such as onions, jalapeño, and cactus. This is a large dish and definitely enough to split between two people. It comes with a side of refried beans, tortillas, and a little bit of guacamole. I really enjoyed this dish! I've never had it before and just the presentation was pretty awesome. We also ordered an appetizer of guacamole. What was initially presented to us who was the completely mashed up guacamole that tasted so incredibly salty that it was not edible. However After we mentioned that to our waiter this was quickly replaced by freshly made guacamole that was truly delicious. The house margarita is good - not terribly sweet and not very sour, I really enjoyed it. The first time I came to the restaurant I had enchiladas that I wasn't too impressed by. they have a big menu with a lot of options but in my opinion the Molcajete is a must try.

This five stars is for the experience I always have when going here - might be mostly affected by my group of friends that I always go with but hey the food isn't bad either! Thursday night is Bingo Karaoke night and it is so fun! I even won 5$ off my meal. The patio is the best seat in the summer (even on the hot nights).

Date of visit: 7/3/21 Overall Rating: 2.82/5 (Score breakdown below) El Molcajete is best described as "underwhelming". I had a strong first impression of the restaurant based on the atmosphere and decorations, but I felt more and more disappointed as my meal progressed. The drinks were decent but overpriced. The menu was extensive and had many abnormal options. The service was terrible. The food was hit-or-miss. I would most likely not return to El Molcajete. Ambience (10%) 4.1/5 I walked into the restaurant and immediately admired the painted walls and decorations. The lighting fixtures were very neat and came in many shapes, including geometric stars. We enjoyed looking at them. There was a nice patio area for outside dining although the only people I saw out there were workers taking their breaks. There was only one other table seated when we entered, and I determined the music to be an appropriate volume for the environment. However, midway through the meal the music stopped and then came back at a much higher volume. There were two toy machines that could be seen from our table which seemed tacky. Lastly, I counted 11 TV's that I could see from my seat and 5 of them were turned off. Service (15%) 1.5/5 The service was pretty terrible. We were seated very quickly and it took us ~10 minutes to order drinks. The chips and salsa were delivered shortly after. We then waited another ~5-10 minutes to order food. The food was delivered quickly, so much so that the cheese sprinkled on the top of my burrito hadn't had the chance to melt. The server checked on us only one time for the remainder of the meal. We then had to sit and wait ~25-30 minutes after finishing our meal for a box and for our checks. Luckily, I was with my #1 restaurant reviewing companion so the conversation was high quality otherwise I would have been considerably annoyed. Menu (15%) 3.1/5 Firstly, the drink menu was extensive and creative. There were numerous choices for margaritas and beers. I appreciated the variety of flavors that might not typically be found on other menus including pineapple, passionfruit, watermelon, fresh squeezed orange, and more. The food menu was much too big. There were two pages of item listings under "Molcajete Specials" which was by far the largest section of the menu. If every menu item is under "Specials" then are any of them that special? I felt overwhelmed looking at all of the options. There were limited appetizer options. There were also many weird options on the menu- Hot wings? Fettucine alfredo? Fajitas with zucchini, carrots, and spinach? These menu options just crowded the already over-crowded menu. Lastly, the menu was expensive. The margaritas were $12 and the entrees were mostly $10-20. Food (40%) 2.4/5 My meal was not good while my companion's meal was decent. The chips and salsa were standard. The salsa had good consistency and spice and we appreciated that the salsa was delivered in two separate bowls. I ordered the Burrito Deluxe. It was not good. It was very wet and the tortillas became gross and soggy. There was way too much lettuce. The chicken was alright, but the ground beef was salty and did not have much other flavor. I ate ~3/4 of the meal and then resorted to eating chips and salsa until I was full. My companion ordered the Quesadilla Oaxaca. It looked delicious and stuffed with fillings. The tortilla was toasted perfectly (unlike my damp rags of tortilla). It apparently had lots of spice but not always a lot of other flavors. The rice and beans on the side were simply average. She said that it was overall pretty good. Drinks (20%) 3.8/5 The drinks were good. My companion ordered the frozen Pineapple Margarita. It tasted exactly how I expected a pineapple flavored drink to taste and had a perfect frozen consistency. We enjoyed the fact that it came with a slice of pineapple. I ordered the Watermelon Margarita on the rocks. If you had given it to me in a blind taste test, I never would have guessed that the flavor was watermelon. I can't pinpoint exactly what it tasted like. It was good though and both drinks seemed to have ample amount of alcohol in them.

We like trying different Mexican restaurants and El Molcajete was on our list of places to visit. We went Sunday at brunch instead of going to a brunch spot close by. Inside the restaurant is clean and tables are socially distanced. There is outside dining as well. We went to the bar and ordered Michelada. This drink was made with Modelo Especial and was the best one yet. The waiter was very nice and helpful pointing out his favorite items to eat. We stopped by for a drink and takeout this time. We ordered chicken fajitas dinner, carne asada dinner, chicken burrito dinner, and chile rellenos. The chicken fajitas were well seasoned and delicious! The carne asada dinner was equally delicious as was the chicken burrito dinner. The Chile rellenos were spicy with the right texture and taste. The rice that accompanied the dinners was very good. My only complaint is the refried beans were very salty. The chips and salsa were spot on. If you are craving great Mexican food, please stop by. The Michelada is awesome.

I had a difficult time ordering as the waiter didn't understand what I wanted. He informed me that the pictures don't match the menu items..oh, great. I ordered the Camarones that was to come with rice, beans, and tortillas. I got Camarones with french fries and lettuce and no tortillas. French fries on a Mexican dish...come on hombre! The over-cooked shrimp was covered in a luke-warm oily butter sauce. My wife had a taco and the meat was very bland. The cheese enchilada she had was hard. The chips were thick and plain and the salsa was a bit spicy. The service was slow to non-existent.

We were seated in about 10 minutes, which is unheard of on a night like that. The service was next level; multiple servers worked together seamlessly, making sure every table was taken care of without missing a beat. The kitchen was firing on all cylinders, pushing out food fast despite being completely packed inside and out, and everything came out hot, fresh, and perfect. They even had complimentary snacks to build your own street corn (hands down my favorite) and gave out Cinco de Mayo glasses, which was pretty cool. I honestly can't say enough good things about this place, the food, the service, the atmosphere, all of it. La Placita is the real deal. Locally owned and operated by genuinely great people, and it shows in every part of the experience. If you're looking for how a restaurant should run on its busiest day of the year, this is it.

I was greeted fairly quickly when I entered and guided to a seat with a menu and silverware. A few minutes later, the server (was bilingual) came out and asked for what I wanted. I received my salsa and chips at this time. The salsa was pretty watery and lacked spice or much flavor. It was nothing special, and chips seemed like they were made a long time ago. Looking at the menu, it seemed like a typical Mexican restaurant though I was a little disappointed that the street tacos didn't have many options. I was a little inclined to think after looking at the menu that it was more Tex Mex. They did seem to have a nice deal for aguas frescas with two glasses for under $3. That's pretty unheard of here in HSV. I ended up ordering 3 pastor tacos. I received food fairly quickly. The street tacos have a large amount of cilantro and raw onions, but not as much meat as I had hoped for. The red sauce served on the side wasn't very spicy and had more of a smokiness. Not sure I had the experience I wanted. I had to wait a bit after finishing my food to get my check or even see the waiter. If I come back, I'll try the aguas frescas.
