Drinks were expensive and the food was awful! The chips aand salsa came out. Chips were unsalted, thick and hard. The salsa was brownish in color and totally flavorless. Chicken quesadilla was mediocre. The chicken wings (menu said everything was made to order) were wing dings. Those are a frozen item. The shrimp were so overcooked they were rubbery and didn't pull from the tail shell. Awful! The hot sauce containers on the table were nearly empty and crusty. Quiet Tuesday at about 5pm. Nice looking place outside and in. Big bar. Lots of booths and tables, only two booths with people in them when we arrived. Friendly server greeted us and sat us. Lots of things on the menu. We had the El Chapo Ceviche to start (fish, shrimp, octopus, oysters, Jalapeno, Avocado), then the Zarandeado Octopus (octopus seasoned and grilled to perfection so as to melt in your mouth, not rubbery like it sometimes can be), served on a wooden board with beans, salad and rice). Being from SoCal, I was exposed to Mexican food early and often. My favorite Mexican fare involves seafood--not many are aware that Mexican cuisine features some really savory ways to cook fish, shrimp, squid, and other fruit of the sea. You can just imagine how delightfully surprised I was when I spotted this restaurant--"El Marinero" (The Sailor), taking over what used to be a Greek diner. I went for what sounded to be really scrumptious--Fish Zarandeado and Shrimp Zarandeado--and judging from the photos I am sharing here, you can see I was not disappointed. The menu is certainly pricey but the quality of the food justifies this. Our server kept pressuring us to get an alcoholic drink in the friendliest of ways so I gave in and ordered the Margarita Mangonada. I was impressed. The drink was expensive but unlike other places where they just serve the $15 margarita in a larger glass and that's that, El Marinero bothered to create a work of art. It's so cute! There's a yellow duckie in a pool of margarita with the tequila nip bottle turned upside down, slowly blending into the mix, and a chamoy that added a salty-sour kick, in a carefully salt-rimmed glass. That drink made me happy. Well, here's the twist. Before ordering alcohol, my husband and I simply asked for water for the each of us, while perusing the menu. The server came back with two bottles of water. So when the receipt came, we saw a charge of $5. When questioned, the server said that they were having issues with their tap water so she just gave us the bottled water. $5 is not going to break the bank but this was not disclosed to us from the get-go. We could have skipped it. Finally, we were paying and about to tip when we see an 18% gratuity on the bill. There were only two people in our party. Nowhere was this written on their menu. Server says that this is the way their owner has had it since the beginning. That didn't sit well with me. I typically tip 20% and sometimes even more when the service is really great. It's fine to charge gratuity but since this is not common practice for a party of 2, it should be disclosed in a very visible way, to customers. For instance, even as a footer on their menu. Sadly, my experience could have been better. But hey, not everyone will experience what I did and perhaps, after what happened, the management may have even changed their system (hopefully), so customers can have the opportunity to savor the good food and the great margarita. read more

This new restaurant popped up on the radar and after seeing some of the pictures of the dishes, I had to try something new. So this restaurant specializes in ceviches and being a big fan of ceviche I was stoked by their selections. This new restaurant was once the old Jefferson grill. And once I entered I had a strange feeling and that the restaurant resembled local joints I've been in when I was traveling in Mazatlan Mexico. And after talking to the waiter, that's exactly the same type of restaurant from mazatlan where the owner is trying to create. So the ceviche that we tried was very good. The right amount of lime juice and cilantro. I had the beef fajita taco salad also very good, Wife finished off with the shrimp tostada. And I had the grilled octopus. LOL. Oh my god. This was something. Ok. so, we were in the mood for seafood. If you like seafood, DO NOT GO HERE! My wife thought that "Mexican Seafood" sounded weird, but I assured her, Mexico is a huge country with oceans touching a large part of it, why wouldnt it be good? It wasnt good. The food is fine, but there are about 2 fish items on the menu. No, I do not count shrimp as a seafood item. The burger place throws on a shrimp. Anyway, my son went to order the $22 fish plate (I had opted out because, if they only have one fish option, I dont have faith in their fish chef.) Anyway, the waitress informed us that it is today a market price of $48. Wow. This was not a lobster. This was a fish. The ony fish they offer. We went on mariachi night. I was charged $5.50 for 2 oz of cheese and an extra flour tortilla for fajitas. No manager on premises to speak to and owner over the phone would not do anything about this billing discrepancy. Go to El Tapatio or Cantina Del Rio for true value and great food. Do not waste your money here. Do not waste $160 here on 2 Margaritas each, an appetizer and a Steak Fajita. First time here and I so enjoy the grilled octopus, BEAUTIFUL board with delicious octopus, lovely FRESH side salad with a limey citrus dressing, rice and beans. On arrival chips and delicious salsa were placed on the table. My companions both enjoyed fajitas, chicken and steak, also serve with a smaller portion of the lovely salad. Served with some shredded lettuce, a very small prepackaged sour cream, a miniature guacamole and a few mediocre tortillas. No choice of corn or flour tortillas. For an empty restaurant the service was terrible. That is probably why they added a 15% tip automaticly on the bill. It was impossible to get a second glass of water. Pros: the food was good. It wasn't exceptional but it was good. The presentation was good. The prices were high but they were fair considering this is a seafood restaurant. Cons The waiter did not bring water or extra napkins to the table. There was one napkin wrapped up with our utensils. That's it. He also put in my entree order after my dates and our meals did not come out at the same time. This is basic restaurant service 101. I don't want to have to ask for extra napkins. Especially for this price point. Staff needs to be trained to bring napkins especially when you are serving seafood. When we got there they had a soccer game in Spanish on every tv and it was LOUD. So loud that I couldn't really have a conversation with my boyfriend. I don't know how the management and the staff didn't realize this. I thought I was at a sports bar without the sports bar food and prices. This is definitely not a place to go on for a date especially with the volume of all the televisions. I could tell the staff and some of the customers were enjoying the game because I heard a lot of cheering going on. Note to management. You have a good solid menu with good food. Please pay attention to the details and to who your customers are. They are super friendly but the drinks and food left something to be desired. I ordered a mojito and it was made with tequila. The pina colada was not blended or frozen so it just tasted like coconut milk. The bartender looked really lost and didn't understand English. She was brought from The back to make the drinks and then disappeared. The menu was about 80% Shrimp based. If you love shrimp it's the place for you. The place has potential and could be something with properly trained staffed and a few menu items that look appealing but aren't sea food based. Or maybe actual non shrimp or ceviche style items. I was truly disappointed today - we arrived for an early dinner around 5pm after a very long work week and our waitress was rude, inattentive, disrespectful and entitled. Today was absolutely horrible and they had a nerve to add a 18% gratuity- it was myself and 1 other person dining?!? Seems to me she didn't give good service because of the automatic added gratuity. Horrible experience- never again. My family and I do our best to support local businesses. We went to dinner and ended up leaving. We were there for over an hour and half and our server was way too busy ignoring us. We understand that businesses are suffering and at times don't have the staff needed, but this was not the case. He was very attentive to other tables. We literally had to beg for him to take our drink order. Extremely disappointed, I'm not sure who the manager/owner is but hope they correct their service.
