Some of the best Mexican Food we've ever had! Drove from Guerneville after reading reviews on Yelp, and it was so worth the drive! The service was fast and very friendly, too. My husband ordered the enchilada platter and he said it was very flavorful. I ordered the carne asada platter, which was served with rice, beans and corn tortillas. The meat was juicy and cooked just perfectly. We visited 3 weeks ago and are still talking about what a great meal we had. read more

Still our go to Mexican spot. Lucky to live about a mile and a half away. This update is simply to add how much I love their shrimp quesadillas and the friendly service. Despite some grousing in other posts, I find there's a healthy mix of both locals and tourists. Just thankful that there was enough business to keep them going through the pandemic. read more

I've been coming to El Mariachi for years, and it's never been anything less than excellent. I'm mostly a burrito man, and my favorite is the burrito a la diabla (a super burrito covered in salsa) with either al pastor or carnitas. Their grilled chicken is also excellent, and my girlfriend swears by the shredded chicken. Their breakfast is also quite good, but it's often overlooked due to the presence of Howard's a few doors down. The only downside here is the lack of indoor seating. The outdoor seating is comfortable, and the scenery is, well, Occidental (which is famously lovely), but during the colder months I usually stick to take-out. read more

My dining experience at Mariachi only goes one way, in five steps. 1. Order burrito regular (raygoolar) and ask for one salsa, one pico de gallo with the chips. 2. Buy 2 organic avocados at Bohemian Market across the parking lot. 3. Drive up the hill to cabin in the redwoods where small parrot greets me with soft, excited screeches before I reach the door. 4. Mash avocados in bowl, mix in salsa, pico de gallo, and pinch of salt. 5. Eat, die, go to heaven. read more

Stayed at the Occidental Inn right across the street while here for a wedding. We went to Howards and spent WAY too much on a breakfast burrito that didn't taste right. Then went to El Mariachi the next day for brunch and got exactly what I was craving. Mexican breakfast, half the price, done right. Superb. (Oh! And they take cards! The other place was cash only.) But that big, dog-friendly patio under the trees...perfect way to start the day! read more

My beloved insisted on stopping in Occidental for lunch at El Mariachi after spending a few days in the Russian River area. We had been there before, loved our lunch. I reluctantly agreed, not because the food wasn't good, but because I wanted to try a different restaurant. He won. Wow! I just ate the best tamales I have ever, ever eaten! The dough was light and fluffy with a hint of spice. The fillings, one vegetable and one carnitas were excellent. There were a lot of veggies, and a lot of meat, both savory and well spiced. My husbands Camarones al Diablo were also good. He wanted a few more shrimp in his lunch because he was so happy eating it. We'll go back anytime we are in the area! read more

I am a local and get take out from El Mariachi often. I also enjoy eating on the little patio. We are nearly always very pleased with the quality of the food. A time or two, I found there was too much salt or black pepper. Usually we order the shredded chicken burrito, or al pastor burrito. The al pastor has a very nice flavor with just the right herbs and spices. The tacos are great. A cold glass of horchata is refreshing to go with a spicy entree. After reading the other reviews, I plan to get the tamales and some of the other choices. They do a fantastic job working out of their tiny kitchen. My husband and I stopped in here today when the restaurant we originally wanted to go to was closed. What a fortunate thing! Although small, this little gem is totally family run and there is love of what they do at this place everywhere you turn. From friendly service to out of the ordinary menu choices to homemade salsa made from tomatoes which we saw lined up on the grill for roasting before their transformation. There are outstanding burritos, with some surprises, Ceviche and Tortilla Soup, all not to be missed. YUM!! read more

First visit I got a breakfast burrito and it was really good, but... I went back and got nachos that were not bueno. Watery cheese sauce, refritos and chicken tinga. I always amazed how restaurant owners don't get the customer service importance of their business. We drove out there because the web site said they closed at 2:00. We got there at 1:40 and were told we could not sit outside on the deck because they were closing and we'd have to take it to go. (little hard on a motor cycle). If you want to go home at 2:00, then close at 1:30. I cannot speak to the quality of the food as we never ate there,,,, and never will! read more

Very good veggie burritos. We usually get it on a plate, no tortilla. They are very accommodating with however we order. They have potatoes in their veggie mix, which is a nice change. They have seafood dishes also that are also very good. Good beer prices. read more

We've been loyal local fans of El Mariachi for a few years now - it's not much to look at but their food is delish. Our all time faves include the carnitas tacos (oh ma gawd), Diablo burrito and pork in green salsa. Their fresh salsa with the chips is the best. This place is a gem off the beaten path in Occidental. Every time I've been there the food is outstanding, and an excellent value for the money. Plus you can eat outside when the weather is nice. Tonight's enchilada dinners were delicious and I was surprised when my husband brought them back as take-out that there were three enchiladas in each, not the usual two you get in most places. Only ate here once on a weekend getaway -- was SHOCKED at how good this random mexican restaurant was. We had some street tacos (carne asada and carnitas) and a carne asada super burrito (covered in enchilada sauce and cheese). Everything was delicious and fairly authentic (although that is a very subjective view). Considering that there's only about 4 restaurants in town, I figured this was going to be a disaster of epic proportions but I was wrong. Meat was cooked beautifully, seared up and crisp on the flat top. Carnitas was delicious as well. I would definitely hit this place up next time I'm in town. read more
