It's a small and casual operation - there's a large seating area behind the restaurant with self serve water. Limited parking out front, and the back lot (with the seating) also has some space for parking, but it's not hard to find parking in the surrounding area. The food here is awesome - deep flavors and genuinely a ton of craft in their work (tamales and tortillas made fresh, you can see them making it through the window by the register). The food is pretty classic, but just executed so well - I really don't think you can go wrong. My personal favorites are the mole enchiladas / tamales (gently sweet, smoky mole, not overly chocolatey and really balanced, especially with a side of pickles) and the fish tacos (GIGANTIC). read more

I felt it had all the components to be successful. I liked the texture of the batter. It also wasn't plain so that was nice. Good ingredients and flavors for sure. What came up short was the ratio of batter to fish. Way too much batter for the amount of fish. Also it was totally the wrong fish for the batter. Way too soft. Since I knew we were going to be passing by, I had to stop in and try it for myself. I ordered a couple of tamales, one chicken mole and one pork. The pork tamale was delicious, and the chicken mole was so good too. I am not usually used to eating mole, but this one was rich, flavorful, and unique. You could really taste the depth in the sauce. I also tried the crispy shrimp tacos, and the shrimp were enormous. They were served on corn tortillas with shredded cabbage and definitely gave me Baja vibes. I saw Instagram foodie Festus try Mexican restaurants in the Santa Rosa and Sonoma County and he stopped by El Molino. I've been looking for a go to Mexican restaurant in the North Bay and decided to give it a try. I got the same two dishes he ordered, Beer Battered Fish Tacos and the Chicken Enchiladas. The guacamole and sauce in the tacos really made the dish! I can see why Festus likes wearing gloves while eating because it was tasty but messy as the tortilla broke cause it couldn't support its contents. The Chicken Enchiladas were delicious and you got to check out the nice cheese pull it has. The service was friendly and great. The seating is in the back and there were several bench patio tables. We stopped by for dinner on a Sunday night. Many items were sold out so we opted for the enchiladas and chips w salsa. We sat out back, wiping the table down with a bleached towel in a nearby bucket. Water was available in a large cooler with reusable cups. It seemed like we waited a long time for our food. Finally, they delivered our food. The temperature was good, the quantity was enormous and the taste was just ok. I was hoping for better. I think the mole sauce needed some salt. The chips are too thick. Some of the best mexican food in the Sonoma area. There is a reason why this spot was so busy on a Saturday evening. My husband and I waited about 10 minutes to order, another 10 minutes for chips & salsa to arrive, and a total of 35 minutes for our entrees to come out. We're rarely in the town of Sonoma but happened to be driving through after a quick trip to Napa. Husband located El Molino Central on Yelp, their reviews looked good and their menu looked different and inviting. We know that they're listed in the Michelin Guide so we were really excited for an amazing meal. Sadly it was anything but. Parking is tricky, they have a tiny lot but the hardware store down the road a bit has a larger lot that they allow for public parking. You order at the counter and then find a seat out back. Water is self-serve in a cooler outside with plastic cups. I was glad the weather was nice. All the tables seemed to be super wet, perhaps from morning dew (we arrived at 11) but we were able to find a dry spot at a high table under an awning. My husband ordered the chile relleno de picadillo, I got the crispy chicken tacos, and we asked for chips and salsa (not complimentary, $7). They brought our chips and salsa shortly after we found a seat. They're generous with their salsa portion. The chips are way too thick and crazy hard/crispy. I honestly was worried about chipping a tooth! They had good flavor though, they're obviously made in house. Our food arrived after maybe a 15 minute wait. Plates were super hot. My husband was quite dismayed at the presentation of his chile relleno (I mean seriously, just look at the photo) whereas I thought mine looked nice. The flavor of both dishes were a disappointment. My husband took one bite and said he didn't think he'd even be able to eat any more. He managed to power through because he was ravenous but he clearly did not enjoy it. In hindsight he wishes he'd just sent it back and gotten something different but again, he was so hungry he didn't want to wait. The chicken in my tacos was dry and bland and the tortilla was thick and hard just like the chips. I liked the crema and whatever the red sauce was that they pour over the tacos. The "guacamole" which seemed more like just smashed avocado tasted off- like the avocados were past their prime (you know how they kind of get that waxy, weird flavor). On the menu, it stated that my tacos came with escabeche, which they did, however it was simply a sliver of very soggy jalapeño, two sad carrot coins, and one tiny string of onion. They had good spice but wow the vinegar was strong. Beans were okay but heavy on the salt. We both left feeling very disappointed and even hours later, my husband says he still feels a little yucky just remembering the flavor of his dish. I have to say it was a chile relleno like I've never seen before- little to none of the fluffy egg batter that I would expect. Everyone does it different but this was just... a letdown. No one really checks on your during the meal, if you need anything you either have to get up and go back around to the front of the restaurant to ask or get lucky enough to flag someone down while they deliver food to the tables. I always order the fish tacos and they are so flavorful and tasty! The ingredients are really fresh, which I also love! The food is what really has me coming back whenever I'm in that area and my husband loves this place too! I find that the prices are well worth it because the quality is so high. The service is excellent here and people here seem genuinely happy to work here, which I love and think it has to do, in part, with this being family owned and not a corporately owned restaurant. Everyone is warm and welcoming and our food came out quickly. The ambiance is vibrant and has a relaxed vibe to it. There are picnic tables outside and umbrellas over them. First time coming to El Molino Central. I typically don't give negative reviews but this is going to be one. Today we were passing through Sonoma and were very hungry so we stopped here. The menu looked interesting. I had the CHILE RELLENO DE PICADILLO. Niman ranch pork picadillo stuffed chile, beans, guacamole & tortillas. Unfortunately, I have to say it was not good. As soon as they set the plate down I knew it was not going to be great. I mean, look at the picture . The pork was gamey and there was some herb or spice that I could barely tolerate. I almost spit out the first bite. But as I was starving, I ate most of it anyways. The batter on the chile relleno tasted really strange. The guacamole had that funky taste that avocado gives when they start to turn. Not sure how they wound up in the Michelin guide. The vegetables in escabeche (which is one of my favorite things to eat) was so bad I did need to spit it into my napkin. Also, chips and salsa are not complimentary. My wife's meal wasn't awful but it was nothing to write home about. We paid $58 (with 20% tip) for a really bad food experience. The staff was friendly though. read more

While staying in Sonoma, we were craving some good Mexican food and this popped up on our search. 2025 bib gourmand award. Located along sonoma highway just a few minutes north of downtown sonoma. Parking can be limited but street parking is available. The must trys are the enchiladas, anything with their homemade mole, and the crisp tacos. Salsa and chips are not included but are worth a try. Easy outdoor seating. Service was quick and ambience was nice although I can imagine this could get a bit warm during the summer. Would definitely come again. read more
