Not sure I just came here too early or it was an off day since my friend loves this place but the tea was too strong and grainy, the queso was really watery, and the rice had an usual ethnic flavor that felt kinda off to me. I wasn't sure about this place when I got there. The plaza it was in was old and sort of worn out. The sign to the restaurant looked old. But when you get inside, it isn't the Taj Mahal but it looks really nice. It looks like an authentic Mexican Restaurant. They were playing nice music. It was relaxing. It was on a Thursday evening and they were serving $1.99 Margaritas. That was heaven for me. My wife ordered a steak Burrito and I ordered a seafood chimichanga. I didn't specify soft so they brought me fried. I made a face but I didn't ask them to fix it because it was my fault. The waiter could see my displeasure and he said "let me fix that for you". I was like who does the kind of service anywhere. Where waiters just observe your not happy and want to please you. So the service was awesome. The food was awesome. There chicken tortilla soup is really great. You love this place. IT looks like it is in a dying plaza. But they have a strong business. read more

They used to be the best in town..now not so much. I didnt know it was possible to mess up a taco salad but they accomplished it. The chicken was rubbery, chewy and inedible. The shell was soggy (mind you this was the 2nd one they brought me) and disgusting...isn't the point of the taco salad to have the crunchy shell to enjoy? The enchilada was disgusting, the corn tortilla was thick and gummy...so weird. And the salsa is literally a can of tomato sauce with a few spices sprinkled in- nothing fresh to be found. Carnitas are great. Juicy and tender. Sooo Azteca is super rich and hearty and great when you're sick or just feeling like a good bowl of soup. Salsas are all stellar and service is quick friendly and attentive. My go to Mexican spot in town. read more

Worst service ever. Waited 10 minutes even before the waiter came. Asked what to drink and brought only ONE water for two people. Visited the nearby tables at least 10 times before coming by to ask for our order. While the food was fast that is all what was good. Waiter comes by later to say ready for check and forgot we ordered a dessert. Waiter says I'll go get your check and doesn't come back for a good 10 minutes after once again checking others tables 2 times before coming back. Very tight seating with a medium sized party, our order took forever to come out and our server Kat was the worst! It was decent but I wasn't excited. Some of the other patrons were friendlier than the staff. Our server was nice. We ordered a drink but he didn't ask what kind (frozen or on the rocks), sugar or salt on the rim or what size. Wanted smallest size of on the rocks with sugar but he didn't even give a chance to hear all of that, he heard margarita and was gone haha. Had to go to the bar to give him the specific drink order. When he came back he had the largest size. Now, the drink was good! Tasted like fruit juice so drank like fruit juice but it hit you after a few minutes. The food was alright...not bad but not great. The seafood enchiladas were small but not bad. I'm used to stuffed enchiladas and these definitely weren't. The quesadilla was a nice size but not cut and the tortilla was soggy making it difficult to cut. I was expecting alot more because of the reviews. This little place in the corner of strip shopping center has blown my socks off! And as a former Texan, I can be picky! When I feel like eating light, I have the Sopa Azteca which is loaded with tender chicken, fresh avocado and seasoned to perfection. Spicy and filling. When I'm ready to indulge my cravings-- and I DO crave this place--I get just about anything else and I've never been disappointed. Today I had the Quesadilla Cancun for linch and I actually moaned aloud with pleasure when I took the first bite. Perfectly grilled shrimp in a yummy cheese sauce with grilled fajita vegetables wrapped in a large flour tortilla. Served with perfect Mexican rice, sour cream and fresh guacamole salad. Superb! Pretty Good Mexican Restaurant not far from the entrance to Shenandoah National Park. Everything we had was extremely flavorful, and really good. A big plus is they serve horchata, and it's not the drink mix made in the back room this was in fact the real deal. All of the plates are served piping hot. When the server handed me my taco salad, she didn't mention before I went to grab it that it was hot. When she handed the plate my way, I grabbed it as do most folks. Apparently they put all of their plates through the oven to cook the food. Why you would serve a plate at 400 degrees with no heat protection is beyond me and frankly, asking for a lawsuit. I suffered a first degree burn. The server didn't apologize or ask if I was okay when i shouted "ow" and quickly released the plate. She responded with "yeah i was going to say these were hot". After that, she didn't even put the plate down directly in front of me. I had to fold up my napkin and use it to adjust the plate in front of me After eating while icing my hand on a cold water glass, my boyfriend asked for a manager. Apparently the manager was on break but they "called him". I still didn't get any type of apology or inquiry as to if I was okay. My boyfriend had to keep tracking people down to get any type of acknowledgement. Their first aid kit consisted of some bandaids and gauze. No burn ointment. Finally, after 10 minutes of looking for a manager, a guy came up to us and started collecting our plates but didn't ask if anything had happened, as if no one told him what was going on. We had to ask if he was a manager. He said the manager was on break but he was the next in charge. So why did it take so long for him to show up at our table? He ended up taking my food and drinks off of the bill. I suggested they train the to servers clearly state that the plates are VERY hot BEFORE they make a move to put them down on the table. We've visited for early lunch twice and while the service is speedy and friendly, I'm sorry to say it's just another so-so Mexican spot (there are dozens with near-identical menus) in the Front Royal/Winchester corridor. The best surprise was that all lunch items are just $5.99 on Wednesdays, so that inspired me to try the fajitas (barely edible chicken, cooked to death). Their rice is OK, and refried beans have a lot of flavor which I fear is lard. The chips are always warm, to their credit. We may go back occasionally, but for real authentic Mexican we'll still prefer Taqueria Guadalajara in Winchester. I wish some cook at one of this area's Mexican restaurants would go eat at Sweetwater Tavern in Centreville and copy their "world's best" (true) fajitas, where the chicken breast is grilled whole, then sliced, there are no bell peppers, the guacamole is chunky and freshly made, and the salsa is a dark smoky type. read more

We visited another Mexican restaurant in Front Royal and felt so rushed through the entire meal, we decided to never go back (plus, the food wasn't all that great); however, the queso craving is strong, so we decided to give El Maguey a chance and boy, am I glad we did! Their queso is decent - I always want it to be hotter (temp wise) but it still hits the spot and sometimes their tortilla chips can be a little greasy. For me though, the chicken fajita burrito is what the visit is all about! It's! Friggin! Delicious! I'm not one that usually eats rice, but I really dig theirs, so my BF usually misses out on getting any extra! Prices are excellent and the service is usually pretty good - some staff are more attentive than others, but that's everywhere, yet still never a bad or rude experience here.
