I stumbled upon this hidden gem while Yelping for a new lunch spot. El Magey succeeds at something that many buffet restaurants struggle with - the food tastes like it was prepared for a restaurant rather than simply produced for a steam table. Everything appeared and tasted like it was freshly prepared by staff who know how to cook. The enormous food selection this day included 2 soups, white and yellow queso's, a Mexican stew, pork tamales, chimichangas, chicken and pork fajitas, enchiladas, flautas, quesadillas, a taco bar, plantains, salads, fruit and several desserts including sopapillas. My favorite selection had to be the pork carnitas. They were seasoned, juicy and overall delicious. In my opinion, the overall variety is actually one of the establishments greatest strengths. Chips and salsa are free and house-made flour tortillas are available upon request. They even offer you a free cup of ice cream when bringing the check. Located on Siegen Lane, it offers a broad selection of Mexican and Latin American dishes, with the buffet supplemented by an à-la-carte menu. The restaurant currently lists hours beginning at 10:30 a.m., making it a particularly practical lunch destination. Still a Mexican buffet--but post pandemic it costs over $21 for the buffet on weekends--not sure if it's cost for lunch/dinner on weekdays but $21 --wow! That said, there are several red meat options on the buffet --more beef than pork--which was a delightful surprise. Another surprise was that it was still have beef tongue as an option. Of course, you have your normal and customary south of the border offerings such as tacos, enchiladas, tamales , chilli releno (??) and stuff to make fajitas. There are 3-4 soups of differing varieties which I think are worth sampling all, especially on colder days and multiple dessert options which are good any season. The ambiance is of a working class place with good ol home food which all should enjoy and like and designed to make you feel good--I certainly felt good and comfortable. We're a family that loves buffets and El Magey doesn't miss. The pros: A clean buffet area, small buffet so the food is always fresh and consistent, the butterflied shrimp are delicious, and all the meat options are really seasoned and cooked well. Pro tip: ask for tortillas to be brought to your table. They're free, along with chips and salsa. Cons: They charge 1 year olds $7. I had to pay $6.99 for my 13 month baby. This is the only buffet I've been to that charges babies & children undr 3. Bc of that, it's a bit on the expensive side if you have small children who don't eat much. But that's really my only con. It's always clean. The side to the left of the buffet is for families & more open. The other side is a bit tighter & darker. I haven't tried the Agua frescas but they look good. Came for the first time yesterday (4/24) food was okay-meh. They have u pay after you eat and don't have their prices posted anywhere in the restaurant for my husband 2 year old and I we paid almost $70 only got buffet and drinks no extra icecream or extra tortillas that they offered (without mentioning an up charge but sure there is one) the buffet is very small and subpar for the price. Could've gone to a normal Mexican place for less and much better food. Was genuinely disappointed. read more

Always gets better, this has been one of my favorite places for years. The buffet has fresh fruit and salad, vegetables, two types of queso, so many things to select from. The watermelon was crisp, there are quesadillas, beef and jalapeño cheese burritos, several types of desert, flan, tres leches cake, soapapillas, tamales. They give you chips and salsa, the salsa is fresh, the chips are great. They add new items all the time. Fried fish, bbq chicken, diablo shrimp but not spicy, all the sides come with the buffet like sour cream, pico de gallo, cilantro, it's amazing. I paid $20.95 but it's always the best. The enchiladas had a slimy texture, meet was dried out except for one type of meet in a gravy that was so slimy. The cheese dip was watered down. I went with my two kids and none of us ate but was still charge $80 for slop. They very few bites I had to try the food made me so sick. The chips were greasy and shiny. I would only eat there if you want to waste money and get really sick. I told the waitress the food wasn't good. She laughed and walked away. Highly recommend this place when you want a good variety of Mexican food. It's off the beaten path of Siegen and when you walk in the place is clean and inviting. They keep the buffet stocked and with many options like chicken fajita, pork fajita, Mexican rice, tacos, grilled fish, quesadillas, and some other non traditional dishes. The variety changes on lunch and dinner but keeps the same options mentioned above. Everything is hot and fresh to say it is a buffet. They also will bring you chips and salsa to the table if you want it. If you like spicy salsa, try the extra spicy or the habanero salsa on the bar and thank me later. This is a hidden gem for sure. I never knew the Baton Rouge had a Mexican buffet until a couple weeks ago. We were told about this restaurant and decided to go lay night. The hostess, and the waiter were exceptional. From the time we walked in, we were served drinks immediately. The food was anything and everything you would want from a Mexican restaurant. The food was hot, fresh and delicious. The chips and salsa is THE BEST BY FAR I've ever had. Chips were thin and crispy, salsa was nice and spicy! The ambiance of the restaurant was nice and cozy, decorated with Christmas decor and playing English and Spanish Christmas songs...very relaxing. Great variety on the buffet. The flautas and taquitos were really good. Shrimp were fresh but could use more seasoning. The salsa was good and had a nice kick But them lengua was horrible. They don't clean off the outer membrane on the cow tongue but it was tender so not the problem. Me and my granddaughter who's 12 came in with 3 other grandkids, a 6 year old a 10 year old and a 11 year old. With every adult purchase, one kid eats free. Instead of charging us for the two adults and the 6 year old, they charged us 2 adults and the 11 year old. The price for a 11 year old was $10.95 instead of the price I would have paid for the 6 year old (6:95) Why does 4 dollars matter so much! Holy cow!! I wasn't expecting much even though the parking lot is always crowded when we drive by. It's WAYYYY nicer than you would think from just driving by and very clean as well. The service was good for a buffet and even the iced tea was good. I tasted everything I could fit on my plate; here's the breakdown: Fajita meat: steak and chicken both yummy. Taco meat: nicely seasoned and also delicious. Pork tamales: some of the best I've ever had. Carnitas: A little salty and chewy but still tasty. A really nice little place and definitely a hidden gem. It was packed with Mexican folks so that is always a sign of authentic and delicious food. I could have eaten a lot more but we have dinner reservations tonight at Ruth's Chris for my birthday and I want to be hungry for that as well. Fajitas, tacos, and sopapillas oh my! Rule of thumb- come here with an appetite to truly enjoy the Mexican buffet experience. I was surprised at the variety of choices: fajitas (beef or chicken), tacos, chicken flautas, quesadillas, taco salad bowls, enchiladas, chile relleno, chimichangas, tamales, soups, queso (white or yellow) and even desserts (tres leches, flan, sopapillas, plantains). Everything I tried tasted good but I really enjoyed the well-seasoned, juicy chicken fajitas, chile relleno, tres leches, and sopapillas (think of it as a Mexican beignet, topped with honey and powdered sugar). The buffet is stocked pretty well with hot food that is constantly being brought out from the kitchen. Te salad bar also looked fresh. The friendly staff bring you warm flour or corn tortillas as well as chips and salsa on request. Be sure to grab some white queso from the buffet- it was all sorts of cheesy goodness that day I visited. Your drink will never be empty and used plates are taken away promptly. The restaurant interior is clean and they do a good job of keeping the buffet area clean. It's a new year, go ahead and indulge yourself. El Magey has become one of my local favorites because of the value, service and variety of food. El Magey is the one for me- shouldn't it be yours too?! P.S.
