I recently stopped by El Loro Mexican Restaurant for lunch and I enjoyed everything very much. My favorite item is the number 11 on the Lunch Menu, consisting of a beef burrito covered with lettuce, tomato and sour cream, and served with a side of Mexican Rice and Beans. This is perfection writ large in my humble opinion. I always leave completely satisfied. The Chips and Salsa are amazing as well. I wanted to start back up with reviews again and man was I disappointed with this place. I love Mexican food and the culture. We got our chips and they were stale 1/5. I wasn't a fan of the number six special. Chicken wasn't seasoned, rice was dry and the lettuce wasn't fresh 2/5. My friend got the quesadilla fajita and it was really good especially for a lunch special 5/5. The Horchata was sweet and smoothy 5/5, last and not least the margarita was good but I would have loved if it was stronger 5/5. Overall experience I give this place a 3/5. read more

I have been coming here on and off for many years and they have never let me down. The service is great whether you eat in or carry out. The white sauce and steak fajitas are some of my favorites at any establishment in the area. Nice clean and quite restaurant. In a good location right in greenbrier not far from the mall and right across the street from target and that large shopping center. Service was slow, we had to wait on drinks and half of our meal was done. That's never enjoyable. Then we asked for more napkins and never received them. But overall the food was delicious hot and fresh. We ordered chicken cheese and rice and also fajitas. The chips white dip and salsa were very good both had a nice little kick to them! We ordered cheese dip which was almost $5 and it came out cold! The food came out fast and it was definitely yummy! No complaints! Just a bad experience with service and cheese dip! read more

In an area where there are tons of Mexican restaurants, it can be difficult to discern the good ones from the bad ones. Even tougher is the idea that many seem to share the same menu items - even specialty dishes. So when a friend told me about El Loro I was a tad skeptical. But to my surprise he was right about El Loro. This is an excellent Mexican restaurant, is spacious and cozy. El Loco also sports good food and fast service, so they hit a grand slam. One dish that I believe needs to be tried is the papas locas. It's a bed of French fries topped off with chunks of pork, cheese dip and pico de gallo. It's listed as an appetizer but it can pass for a meal big enough for 2 people. In fact, the first time my friend took me that's all we had. Well, we had chips with the salsa and white sauce (whoops, we also ordered some freshly-made guacamole), but the papas locas will fill you up. Oh yeah, in case you're wondering - it is delicious. Their service is fast and friendly - I ordered iced tea and my server kept them coming. I'm used to silent refills but it's all good, as long as my server is on top of it then I'm good. One thing I noticed - El Toro is surprisingly big. The only Mexican restaurant that's as big (bigger, actually) is (I believe) Plaza Azteca off of Holland Rd. They can seat a lot of people, which is good because it'll cut down on wait times. I have no complaints when it comes to El Loro. El Loro is always on it, I've been here twice and never had a complaint. The food has always been fast, delicious and good. I ordered a STIFF margorona (no complaints there), the mixed fajitas that come with Shrimp, Beef, and Chicken. My girlfriend ordered chimichangas and it made me jealous, it was so good. When we went, there were a lot of families, so the atmosphere there is fine for everyone. The tableside guac was banging. There was just something missing, but I can't figure out what it is with those fajitas. Anywho, I would come back, so score! read more

I went here with my husband last week, and I haven't stopped craving it ever since! My husband got the Philly cheese steak burrito and I got the Los Cabos burrito (with shrimp, pineapple, and cheese sauce) and they were both so good! I was expecting to not love the pineapple in the burrito because I'm normally someone who, although I love pineapple on its own, typically I don't think it's a good "team player" with other savory foods. However, I was very nicely surprised with this burrito! I think El Loro did a great job of balancing sweet and savory by ensuring to put enough pineapple that it was noticeable, but not so much that it overwhelmed the other ingredients. Of course each of our burritos also contained some really tasty, freshly grilled produce (onions on mine; onions, peppers, and jalapenos on his). The complimentary chips are good; salsa is excellent and savory; the white sauce, like virtually every other Mexican restaurant in the area, is kinda gross since it's basically Miracle Whip. I loved the rice. The beans are kind of thin and could use some more seasoning. The guacamole is made fresh by an enthusiastic man who rolls a cart over to your table so you can watch him make it before your eyes, and the end result is very fresh and delicious. And the prices? They also serve this white sauce with the chips that I have never seen before- guess its a VA thang and it is go-oood. My dinner was the El Flakka salad with grilled shrimp(lots of shrimp), roasted corn, black beans, avocado, onions , lettuce some fruit. Really good and filling. Very nice , clean, friendly establishment. There is not a lot of noise do we can have a great conversation while we eat without raising our voice. The food here is very tasty. Served up fast and hot!! Staff is very professional. The tortilla chips are very fresh and a great addition before the meal. My go to meal is the chimichanga. I had been wanting to visit this place for a long time because it's really close to my house, but I cannot express my displeasure enough about the food served at this place. They serve chips with two types of salsa, which would be a plus, except one of them is a cream based "salsa" that tastes like watered down tartar sauce, and a tomato based salsa which was not bad. I ordered a California burrito as my entrée and could not believe my eyes when they brought me the plate...especially after noticing that it was almost $14 for this "bloody" burrito. I'm really trying not to curse in this review, but I felt my blood boiling when I saw what they had the courage to call a "CALIFORNIA BURRITO"!!! For those of you who don't know, a California Burrito is a big o' burrito that is loaded with meat (grilled steak or chicken), it has French fries, guacamole, cheese, and in some cases sour cream. Typically they use a flour tortilla that's 14" in diameter or bigger because of all the fillings it has to hold...and when the burrito is folded the top and bottom ends are folded in to keep everything inside. The sad "taco" I got didn't even have the ends folded in because they used a standard 10" flour tortilla to make it, not ok! The burrito did not have guacamole nor avocado, that's the main ingredient that makes it a Cali burrito! It had very little steak and a few fries, it was mostly sour cream and air. And then to top it off the tortilla was hard on top and soggy on the bottom, so I couldn't even grab it to eat it! The whole darn thing was falling apart...needless to say that even though they made it seem big with the way that they rolled it, there was a lot of empty space inside with very little filling. I am absolutely appalled by the idea that they could serve some crap like that and think it's going to be ok...in addition to the amount they want to charge for it. I don't mind paying the price if they are going to serve good food, but this was atrocious! We also got a dinner size guacamole that was bland and just meh for $10. The horchata was ok, really sweet but probably the only good part of our meal. That burrito though...(deep breath) had me wishing for SO much more!! I didn't even bother taking pictures of anything else because it wasn't worth my snaps. I just had to show everyone what this sad burrito looked like. We decided to go to this place since it is down the street from our home and I'm so glad we did. The place is decorated nicely and it had a nice ambience about it. The lighys were dimmed so it was a vibe. They were playing spanish music in the back ground and it wasn't too loud like places can be so all around good atmosphere. The decor and decorations were lovely as well. It's was pretty early so it really wasn't alot of customers in the restaurant. The staff was friendly and helped us immediately upon seating. I ordered a blueberry margarita with a beef burrito and hubby ordered a shrimp burrito. The shrimp in the burrito was had a smoky flavor to it, the onions were caramelized to perfection. The beef burrito had a creamy flavor to it, the meat was moist and yummy. We ordered guacamole and the chef made it right in front of us! That was amazing and it tasted great and fresh. I've been coming here for years. Let's say I'm a veteran on the streets of Greenbrier haha. Anywho, it's been a long time since I've been able to go out to dinner with my fiancé ( first time parents in our 30's). Every time we have come here. We are treated respectfully. They even teach us some Spanish sometimes.. love the culture & the food is tasty too. Great atmosphere. I've come here with many friends & family all throughout my years. Love the decor too since they remodeled it (feels like aeons ago when they remodeled). Enough background story Let's talk food. I got a new dish they offered on Special called The Philly Cheesesteak Burrito. It was delicious. I ended up buying one to go for my parents. They even enjoyed it (Said it was spicy due to jalapeños). My fiancé got my normal Pollo Popeye & he even approved that both dishes are yummy. We love eating food. My daughter and I went for a early dinner around 4 to go when they weren't packed. They weren't very busy at all, and we were sat on the other side as the only customers there on that side.. We ordered enchiladas, tamale and a soft taco. The sauce on the enchiladas was awful, tasted like barbecue sauce! The taco was good as usual, but the enchilada sauce ruined my appetite so couldn't enjoy. Ten minutes or more went by and no one checked on us much less brought refills of chips and salsa. I had to stand up and ask is anybody waiting on us? Finally someone came over and I told them how I disliked the enchilada sauce and it tasted strange. I said I would pay for the taco, but wanted the combo meal taken off. At least he took my meal off the bill. It was the worst experience I have ever had going out to eat. We stopped in on a Friday night recently. I used to religiously visit El Loro several years ago - at least once a week with my parents. Back then, the coupons that were mailed out were 2 combo meals for maybe $7.99. Now, it's 2 for $12.99 if that gives you an indication on how much time has passed. I didn't even know they had expanded into the space that used to be occupied by Anthony's Pawn Shop. Congrats on the growth, guys! Some friends of ours had already reserved space at the bar - a good thing since the wait was fairly significant. We ventured over and were immediately greeted and served by Sue. Sue is AMAZING! She managed a very full bar like it was nothing on top of drinks for the rest of the place. Her service alone is enough to go back for a beer or two. The food, however, is nothing like I remember. It's decent for a local Mexican joint, but I wasn't blown away. Granted, my food choices have changed since I used to frequent the place and I had never ordered a salad there, but my chicken was greasy and the veggies were lacking. I ordered more lettuce and it was brought out on a warm plate. Yikes. If I ever decide to start eating copious amounts of cheese, refried beans and the like again, I'll go back for dinner. My boyfriend just got back in town from deployment so we decided give this restaurant a try. While we were waiting to be seated, we also had to wait till the hostess finished having a conversation with her friend. I was literally about to seat myself because she took way too long to acknowledge us. That was strike #1. Once we were seated we ordered two jumbo margaritas. Just for some background info, I am a bartender myself so I know how the drink should have been made. The margaritas were completely watered down, we were being very compliant customers and just requested for some more alcohol in our margaritas. They brought another margarita to our tables and we tried them out and it tasted just like straight sour mix. Instead of trying another drink made by the bartender we just decided to order a draft beer. My boyfriend and I ordered the Shrimp Camarones with rice and beans. The good thing was it didn't take long for them to make our food, but to describe the food in one word..HORRIBLE! The sauce on the shrimp was supposedly their "Mexican Sauce". I've tried Mexican sauce before and I have never tasted a sauce so bland. That Shrimp Camarones should've stated on the menu "Shrimp with Tomato Sauce". The rice tasted like it has been sitting around all day. My boyfriend and I barely touched the food because it was just a waste. Their plates were not even cleaned thoroughly. The server was being very polite and informed us that she will send the manager over to discuss the food. Once the manager came to the table she immediately said "If you didn't like the food why would you order it?" I was at complete shock just to hear that from a manager who is supposed to provide great customer service skills. What kind of question is that? We were originally going to just pay for the food and just find somewhere else to eat, but we decided to take it off of our bill and just pay for the beers because that was really rude. BUT WAIT... IT GETS EVEN WORSE!! One of the staff members that didn't even provide us service walked up to the table and said to my boyfriend "I heard you didn't like our drinks, and if you couldn't pay for the food why would you order it? Hopefully the beer was good" We paid for the beer only and left. All we wanted was a simple fun night in town. Fast and friendly service, nice atmosphere, but mediocre food and prices. This was my go-to Mexican place for many years. It was just a small place back then and it had a loyal following. In the last two years or so, I've stopped in when visiting town and I noticed a significant drop in quality and value. The food is hit and miss. Fajitas and tacos are a good bet. Chicken dishes and combo platters are not as good. My most recent visit was disappointing due to a very blah Chorri Pollo. 3 stars for nostalgia and ambiance, but the food has room for improvement. read more

Been a while... Gonna be a while... I had lunch here last Friday with a couple of coworkers. I really didn't want to go here however the person that was really pushing to have Mexican for lunch wanted to go here because it was the closest to work. I ordered a combination platter which included a Taco an Enchilada and a Tostada. There were also fajitas (chicken & beef) and a Enchilada platter with rice & salad. The food as expected was as bland as I remembered it. Our server was ok, but was struggling to understand English when we were asking to have the check separated as everything was lumped onto one bill. Towards the end of lunch I noticed a big roach crawling up the wall over the booths directly behind my coworkers on the other side of the table... That killed it for me there however I took a moment to zoom in and snap a photo of it too. I tried to point it out however again our server didn't understand and I was trying to be discrete and not point it out in front of a room full of diners. We paid our bill and left. Feliz Cinco de Mayo is what brought me here recently. I came with a big party of friends - 8 total. I got there around 630 pm and was worried we'd have a long wait for a table. The place already had a bunch of people waiting, but I was told it would be a 20-30 minute wait. True to their word, we got seated and started ordering. I ordered a frozen margarita and table side guacamole. The margarita was delicious and definitely not watered down. The guacamole was amazing as the guy making it asked what we wanted in our guac which allowed me to have no cilantro in mine so I could eat to my heart's content. The guacamole was mashed so well and perfect for my tortilla chips to dig in. On to the entrees... Considering how big our table was, we did not wait long for the food to arrive. I ended getting a combo of a taco, enchilada, and burrito. I was able to eat mostly everything except some of the enchilada was left over. Probably since I ate so much guac and chips. Service was with a smile as our waitress took great care of us. She did forget my boyfriend's drink, but made up for it immediately as it was brought to her attention. I was also impressed with the guys delivering our food. They have the plates stacked one after another on their arm with perfect balance. Things to look out for: It can get cramped at the entrance. With a ton of people already waiting, it was a bit claustrophobic to pay at the entrance. Overall, a great Mexican place for Chesapeake! Living in SoCal for the last 5 years has afforded me the capability of recognizing legitimate Mexican food from the not-so legitimate variety. For what it's worth, El Loro is the closest to authentic you'll find in the Hampton Roads area. But is it authentic? Not really. I rarely use the word bland to describe food, but I can't think of anything else to describe what I ordered. Two beef tacos with beans and rice was not what I was expecting. There just wasn't enough flavor. The beans tasted like they were from a can and the rice was just blah. The two ground beef tacos weren't seasoned enough and the only flavor that came through was that of the lettuce and cheese. Like I said, this place is great for the Virginia Beach area, but if this place was operating in SoCal it wouldn't last very long.
