I went to El Jardin with my husband while we were in Chi-town. I had heard from people that the margaritas will knock your socks off. I was skeptical because I like to think I have a high tolerance. I had one of the house margaritas and could feel it after one!! I would def go here again but make sure you eat while your here. These drinks are VERY STRONG! This was our second time coming to this restaurant. The food was great, but the service was mediocre at best. We had to flag down a different waiter just to get someone to take our order. After walking around to find a place to eat and with the time being close to 3pm, we were running out of options in Lakeview. We saw that this place was still happening and decided to give it a try. After we were seated they gave us salsa and chips. The chips had a "fritos" taste to them. They weren't your standard tortilla chips. They were ok but I probably ate too many. And the salsa was mega-hot. I wasn't really craving Mexican but decided to order something different. My standard is either tacos or a burrito. This time, I went with the chicken tamales. You get 3 and it comes with a side of rice and beans. I thought the dish was solid overall and definitely felt full afterwards. Service was ok. We had to wait a while to get a refill on waters and sodas. Also we had to wait a while to get our check. But it was the middle of the day on a Sunday during Labor Day weekend. read more

The food is good, but it's rather pricey for what you get. I went with a group of 5 and was charged the automatic gratuity for parties of 8 or more. The gratuity was included in the total amount but without any indication it was added, so we ended up tipping on top of this. Sure, we could've been more thorough in verifying the bill, but to "hide" the gratuity charge by putting it in the total automatically and not listing it in the itemized charges is unethical. Especially since we didn't even qualify and we're not looking out for it. I happily always tip at least 20% after the fact. Word on the street is that this place frequently overcharges. NEXT. I will start by saying that the salsa at El Jardin is quite good, but I can get good salsa at Jewel. Is it gold-inflected steak, you ask? No. Just a regular steak burrito. Moving on to the enchiladas- they charge extra for cheese. Um...'nuff said. Guacamole. No price is established besides "Market Price." I'm sorry, I thought we were at a Mexican Joint, not McCormick and Schmick's. My combination platter was mediocre at best- but only with the aforementioned salsa dumped all over it. The tomatoes were a strange white-ish color. Gross. The service, absolutely TERRIBLE. The worst part of the experience was that my group of seven had a bill of around $200 and they refused to take more than two credit cards. C'mon now. The extremely rude manager told us we would all have to take money out of the ATM. Couldn't be because of the $3 per transaction ATM fees, could it? A coincidence? I think not. El Jardin is the stingiest of stingy. They think they can get away with ripping people off just because of the location. Well, maybe they can, but not this girl. 2 1/2 stars I actually like it at El Jardin, my friends don't, but I do. Sometimes when we're tooling around the neighborhood on a Saturday someone will say "Where should we go for lunch?" and I'll pipe right up and say "El Jardin". A collective groan emanates from my friends, but sometimes I win even if their enthusiasm is sorely lacking. Isn't nice to have friends who will give-in for you on occasion? I actually like the kitschy room, the bad décor and the tables squeezed together. It feels more like a place on Boca Rattan than a hacienda in Mexico, but whatever: its fun, if you can suffer the inconsistent service. Just keep drinking, it'll be fine. I think El Jardin makes a fine margarita: one, two, there, floor! I always get extra salt too just in case the booze isn't destroying my liver I can rest assured that the salt is doing double time on my heart! The chips and salsa with a margarita is worth the trip [or price] alone, but you've come this far, you should eat something. My friends and I will splurge on the guac [almost $7] and Queso Fundido with chorizo [$8]. Skip the pricy salads, but inquire as to the soup. They can sometimes be half way decent. Then we all go our separate ways. Everyone thinks they've found something on the moderate menu, even if they wouldn't touch something else, for whatever reason. I typically get the Carne Asada Miguel which, unbelievably, is more expensive than the Red Snapper with Pico de Gallo ... or the Steak Taquitos or the Potosinos. Typical favorites of my friends include Flautas, Pollo en Mole and Fajitas Torta. Admittedly there can be an aesthetic "problem" with presentation [how is that lettuce, tomatoes AND onions are all white?] and that may be the primary problem people are really having, but I think the food is tasty for what it is: Mexican diner food in a Boca Rattan room. I really like the feel of this place. The food isn't the greatest. They don't have a ton of choices. IF you want really good authentic Mexican food you're probably not going to find it in Lakeview to be honest. We knew that when we came. So that isn't a huge disappointment. Although I do love me some good Mexican places :) The staff was more than amazing though. My husband can be a little bit of a cry baby when he is hungry (hangry), but they put up with his stinky attitude until he go some food in his belly really well. They went well above what would be expected of them. So they get 4 starts for the service. I take one star away because I really love Mexican food and the options here are not that great. Sometimes you really want Mexican food. Sometimes you really want a margarita. Well I got a margarita here (which definitely packs a punch!!!) so that was checked off my list. But the food? Well, I was underwhelmed and even a melted cheese queso dish fell short for me. The chips were also not the greatest in the world, but the margaritas and the outdoor seating is the reason to come here. I think you get some nachos or something and a margarita and you grab a table outside and you can easily watch all of the cubs fans walk by on game days which leads to great entertainment and people watching! This is for the outdoor patio area only!! I spent many a drunken Sunday on the patio here in my youth. I don't recall the food being outstanding, but in all honesty,I was not there to eat. I loved the pitchers of the traditional Margaritas and drank them early and often. I don't really care for the indoor seating at El Jardin, as you are piled atop of the next table and can hear some awkward conversations.... That's why I preferred the outdoor area! For some reason, when we come here, we are treated like gold, like family, like high-rolling mothers. None of which we are. Still, we were still served delicious plates and delicious drinks at very reasonable prices. Very many dishes can be modified to be strictly veg, and no one will look at you weirdly. Until this week, I had the displeasure of living in the house directly adjacent to El Jardin for a year. The management of this restaurant are some of the most rude, unfriendly people I've ever encountered in or out of the restaurant. The layout of the place is 2 lots wide, the main part of the restaurant is the base of a 3 flat building. Above that, the management lives. She has a dog. A big dog. And 3x a day you can see her parading the dog through the restaurant to let him out. They have a sign on their own grass that says "keep dogs off grass" so what do they do? They come and pee on "our" grass. Not to mention I think it's disgusting that they bring a dog through the restaurant's kitchen area in order to take the dog out back. Ironically, we once called on a quiet afternoon where their patio was otherwise empty, asking if we could bring a small 8# dog over. They said yes. When we showed up, mama's husband told us no, no, no, despite the fact that we had called ahead to ask. The restaurant is unfriendly to neighbors, even though as neighbors we had to constantly put up with the shit that came out of this restaurant... Loud garbage truck pickup at 4am every morning. Sysco, Tyson (IBP ...better known as the ammonia soaked beef that the movie Food, Inc. was about, of which boxes are regularly loaded into the kitchen here), and other vendors parking their truck in the alley for 30 minutes while leaving the engine running, allowing exhaust to fill our entire building. Loud parties in their patio frequently somewhat late at night; patrons from their restaurant sitting on our stoop to smoke, etc.. Being neighborly and all, I once went in there because I was almost done with dinner and had run out of sour cream. I asked to buy a small container of sour cream, "mama" literally rolled her eyes, then charged me $3 for a 1 ounce container of sour cream (literally the size they give you if you get a taco). The food is unremarkable. Average on the best of days. Their house margaritas ($8/glass) are a gross high fructose corn syrup mix, and the cheapest liquor they can find. It's actually grain alcohol, and you can taste it. If you want to get really f'ked up this is the margarita for you though. For $13 you can get a normal margarita with normal tequila. All in all, we only went there 2 or 3 times. The last visit we went mainly because I've had a restaurant.com gift certificate for almost a year. The certificate states you need to spend $50 to get $25 off, excludes alcohol at restaurant's discretion. We spent $88, $45 of which was alcohol. With most restaurant.com restaurants, the intended disclaimers are at the restaurant's discretion and normally are there to keep people from just ripping them off by ordering the minimum possible. The waiter came back, and said "sorry the food totaled out to $39" and dropped the bill off. 10 minutes later we tracked him down, we were ready to order $11 more food, which would've made our bill cheaper, or $20 of tequila shots. We actually gave him the option. He came back and said she said "mama" said she'd take $15 off but no shots. We could've ordered $11 of food and been in the same place, but I was so annoyed we just did it. Our waiter was actually very nice, and we were prepared to tip him very well, but he added tip on at a lower rate than we were prepared to tip. So we threw in some cash for him beyond the added in tip. If you're going to offer a gift certificate or coupon that's designed to be a marketing effort, don't go out of your way to piss off your customers and be stingy. I don't think I'll ever be back here voluntarily. Service is hit or miss depending upon who you get. The food is not anything special, their ingredients are the crappiest stuff they can buy. There's way better Mexican in Chicago, and way better food to be had the area. And the management is inexcusably horrible. read more

Came here last weekend while visiting Chicago. Where do I begin? I will give them that it was the Saturday that the Cubs clinched the NLCS, but it was 3pm and the game didn't start until 7pm. Busy, but i'm sure it got a lot busier that night. We walked in and were seated right away. After a few minutes the waitress came to take our drink orders and when she returned with our drinks she brought the check with her. When we reminded her that we were ordering food she said she'd be back. She came back about 10 minutes later to take our food order, after we waived her down. We ordered an entrée to share that has 3 little burritos. She brought our food out and it was 1 big, wet burrito. Not at all what we ordered and we let her know that. This has happened to me before and I totally understand that mistakes and miscommunications happen. It's really about how you remedy the situation that counts. She responds with "well, that's what I put in". We said fine, it would do and asked for an extra plate that never came. On to the actual burrito...I live in Southern California and may have higher standards, because I am fortunate to have so much delicious Mexican food around me, but it was TERRIBLE. I enjoy wet burritos, I really do, but this burrito tasted like it was covered in marinara sauce. It just was not good. Finally, this place is completely overpriced. So it's quite simple, good margaritas, decent food. Definitely one of my mainstay Mexican places in the city. Ranks close to Cesar's but not anywhere close to Tarasca's caliber. Margaritas are better than Cesar's, not better than Tarascas. Food is good, on par with Cesar's. Basically this is a run-down feeling Mexican place. Have a few TVs there so you can watch the game. Fairly quick in-and-out and you can't beat the location basically being at Sheffield and Clark. However, not all that authentic, I actually had a waiter that looked like Seth Rogen's twin. I went to El Jardin for the first time yesterday with some friends expecting a great experience, at least a good experience, but instead I was shocked by the behavior of the wait staff in this establishment. We all walk in and things are normal. Initially there were just three of us and we knew we had more people coming, so we sit in the bar/waiting area for the rest of the group, and we are offered chips and salsa while we wait. This is where we first meet our waiter (Uriel) and immediately I could sense his sassy attitude. Uriel was just plain rude in how he carried himself, and with nearly every interaction with our group. He just didn't seem like he wanted to be working, like he would rather be someplace else. I just brushed it off for the moment thinking it would pass. So, the remaining members of our (small) group arrived and we ordered. I ordered the Bistec tacos, three tacos with rib eye steak meat, cheese, lettuce, and tomatoes with a side of rice and black beans for $10. I ordered double rice instead of the black beans. Overall my food was sub-par at best. The first taco I bit into seemed on its way to perfection, but I felt there was something missing. There was plenty of meat in the soft shell so that was no problem. The other two tacos were dry and the meat was overcooked and somewhat tough. Also, not enough cheese lettuce and tomatoes. So when it comes time to get our check, we find out that we can't split up the bill and can only pay with a maximum of two credit cards. What a customer inconvenience! Not to mention our waiter Uriel was once again rude and apathetic in explaining this (He sure didn't forget to mention they have an atm with a $2.75 fee). I don't know what Uriel was doing in the time we handed him our cash and credit cards, but it took him at least 15 minutes to run the cards, then we had to sign and tip. Surprisingly, Uriel doesn't hesitate to pick up the signed receipts, and to find out what his tip is or isn't. He doesn't even wait for us to leave. So we are walking out, and everyone sees our waiter standing by to greet us as we leave. I'm following behind the rest of the group and as I approach Uriel, he has the audacity to ask me why we only tipped $4 on a $73 bill. "Excuse me, I don't mean to be rude but you guys tipped me $4 on a $73 bill." These were our waiter Uriel's exact words. I was pretty shocked and angry at that point. I told him to go about his business, and that he has some nerve asking about the amount of the tip we gave him. You NEVER ask a customer that, it's rude and extremely unprofessional. Later, I call and ask to speak to a manager and I get a guy named Louis. I told him about the situation. Pretty much the first thing he ask me was "why didn't you inform me at the restaurant, we could have all worked out the situation right there." "How do you even know I'm going to address the situation with him now?" I explained to him that I was informing him as a courtesy, and that if he addresses the situation with his waiter doesn't make any difference to me. It's not my problem. The issue will eventually catch up with the restaurant if the waiter continues to act the way he does. As a result of my first experience with this establishment, I certainly will never go back. Based on the manager Louis' attitude, I can only assume the rest of the wait staff thinks that it is ok to behave in the manner that they do, (Uriel certainly does) and somehow bad customer service will continue to grow their business. My boyfriend and I were meeting friends there on a Saturday night per the suggestions of said friends. We had made reservations but happened to get there early so we chose to sit by the bar and just grab a drink until everyone else arrived. The bartender brought us our drinks (lime margaritas on the rocks with salt on the rims) and asked us to pay since we would be sitting in the dining area for the remainder of the night. I gave him my credit card without fully hearing the total. The bill came back as $9 for each which I knew was comparable to places like Cesar's. But then I took a sip. And I almost threw up. It was hands down the worst margarita I had ever drank. I immediately called my friend and said we are going somewhere else because I just took a sip of a margarita that tasted like pledge and acid. I was not about to stay there and spend that much money on terrible drinks. Needless to say, we left immediately after that. (There is a place down the street that is amazing!) I left my barely touched drink there. I suppose it depends on when you go and who is serving. I, however, will never be back. I am SHOCKED that no one has reviewed this place! Where are my fellow yelpers? This place is always filled with people - especially when it is warm outside and people can enjoy the nice outside patio or tables that butt up to windows looking out on to the patio where the breeze sneaks in. The food is no frills but you know what you are going to get and are stuffed before you get it due to the great chips and spicy salsa. Great burrito suiza and the mole sauce is top notch. Wash it all down with a pretty decent margarita on the rocks - nothing like Dad makes, but still snag a buzz from the tequila. Take leftovers or be just as happy grabbing take out. They package up the dinner just right for a hot meal at home on your own patio! Now get back to reviewing fellow yelpers! P.S. Is el jardin gourmet? no way. but that's not why you go there! i have been there to dine- mistake. their entrees are sub par and standard cheap mexican fare. el jardin should only be visited for their amazing margaritas and the free chips and salsa. the red salsa is okay, but if you ask for the green, they'll give you (free) warm salsa verde, and it's GREAT. and they'll keep bringing it as long as you keep eating it. i'm surprised to read that some diners have had bad service there. i've eaten there many many times and never had a problem. in fact, once you go once or twice, the guys will recognize you and be extra friendly. and no, they won't give you guff for never actually ordering off their menu. all in all, go. get drunk. eat salty chips. you won't be disappointed. read more

When my boyfriend asks me how I like my food during dinner, I am usually enthusiastic so as to not ruin his experience. This was one of the rare occasions where I had to respond with "It's pretty terrible" and excuse myself to the bathroom. This was, hands down, the worst mexican food I have EVER eaten. The chips came warm, which was nice, and the salsa was yummy, but everything else was a nightmare. I had a vegetarian combination. Everything was cold, the guacamole tasted suspicious, the cheese tasted old, everything that was meant to be crispy was soggy and everything that was meant to be soft was getting hard. This place was horrible. 1. Horrible service- We were told first thing that the kitchen was behind and to not expect much, so we were aware and much more lenient. Our entire dinner took over 2 hours... for Mexican... for cheap Mexican- no excuse. The person who sat us was very nice. Our waiter, not so much. He had better things to do and acted standoffish. We had to wait over 25 min to even get our check.. crazy. 2. The food was gross. Vegetarian does not equal the same meal only without meat. The only vegetables I saw were lettuce and onions (see below). Vegetarians beware- you better be prepared to eat an extreme amount of cheese (and not even good cheese), which is how they supplement not having meat. In my boyfriend's meal, they actually did put a vegetable-- ONIONS. What kind of enchilada has JUST onions and cheese? Our food was greasy, gross, and had a strange burnt aftertaste. It tasted like a frozen dinner. The salsa was watery and relatively tasteless. If you know of a place where I can find GOOD Mexican food, vegetarian, with chunky, flavorful salsa- message me. It's Broken, Fix It It's Cinco De Mayo, you are a Mexican Restaurant, DO NOT SERVE YOUR DRINKS IN SOLO CUPS El Jardin. The atmosphere was extremely busy, but rightfully so (it's your day). Everything about the atmosphere had plenty of potential. The location is great and the vibe is right. The number one problem that El Jardin owner/management needs to update their policy on is the split check. The reason I joined yelp was to review this place - their customer service and response to patron's requests is the worst I have every experienced. I lived three doors down from El Jardin and drank there at least once a week for two months - truly, you can't beat their margaritas in terms of mess-you-up-for-hours-ness. However, I stopped going there after a group of my friends were treated horribly. Boiling it down, we selected El Jardin as the place to have a going-away party. There was to be around 12 people attending, some eating, some not, but most people were planning on drinking quite a bit. The people who first arrived explained the plan to the hostess, who said we can have as many tables as we need, as long as the rest of the party came soon. Half of the people were delayed and only a few of us started drinking. The waiter immediately got irritated and started commenting on how we shouldn't be eating chips and salsa and how we couldn't have two tables if not everyone was drinking. Mind you, the back patio was half-empty. We asked for water and he said no, we were killing his turnover for nothing. After speaking to more people who were on their way, we started to pull more chairs to our table. The waiter actually pulled the chairs from someone's hands saying we couldn't just loiter if not everyone was eating or drinking (at this point, we had consumed at least $50 worth of booze). I finally asked to speak to the manager. Wow. I explained what was going on and the manager basically got in my face, told me I was full of crap, he had never seen me before, and that it was people like us that ruin his business. He turned to a woman next to him and said "you talk to her- I can't deal with her." At this point, I was a bit fired up. I told the woman that the area in which we were sitting was half-empty, we had a large group coming that was planning on drinking heavily, but that now we would just leave. She apologized, but didn't offer any concession. We asked for our check, tipped the helpful bus boy, and walked out. As we left, the waiter and manager watched us and made several comments. When someone doubled-back to ask what they said, the waiter replied "Oh, nothing, man. " Then when we stepped away the manager said "F*** you too." I'm not sure where the good business sense was here, but we went to another bar, the rest of our group met us out and we drank about $250 worth that night. My wife and I have been coming here for over a decade, at least once a month. Good food and great margaritas! For us, it's like our second living room. We've gotten to know the owners and most of the staff over the years. They couldn't be friendlier, so not sure why some of the other comments have mentioned the service. They've been around for over thirty years, so they must be doing something right! read more
