We went to La Condesa for dinner on a Tuesday night. It was surprisingly empty especially considering how good the food tasted. The service was great but the food was outstanding. It didn't hurt that the portion sizes were incredibly generous too! They served free chips and salsa. My partner loved that the salsa had a spicy kick. The shrimp ceviche was delicious and more mild. We both enjoyed our separate entrees and are looking forward to trying more menu items in the future. We will definitely be coming back again. read more

Came in for a quick meal before a show. We got a shrimp cocktail and a seafood cocktail (vuelve a la vida) a long with a beer and a piña colada. The cocktails were both so good. Really good traditional Mexican food at decent prices. The complimentary chips and salsa were very flavorful and tasted fresh. The server was very attentive and constantly topped up our coffee. I got a tostada de ceviche which was huge but the prices on line and on the menu were all different. I hate when there is like 4 different prices. The ceviche was good but lacked seasoning. I love this restaurant the food and drinks, specially the salsa, however this past weekend on mother's day, I encountered the worst service. Everything was good, business as usual took some time to get my food but understandable since it was a busy mother's day weekend. However everything went south, when it was payment and time to leave. My husband being as gentlemen went to take care of the bill since it was a treat for myself and my family. He pays the bill before my parents try to pay, so we make our way out the door. As we are going out the door a lady comes back running asking if we paid. We affirm yes indeed and have a receipt as proof of purchase. Then as we get in the car she comes back screaming and yelling claiming we left without paying. We are shocked as those are strong declarations , I ask her how did we come out with out payment if I have a ticket from them. She ask to see it, and comes to realized it is a ticket from the location but still claims it to be false, and I have no payment. We go back inside to see what went wrong, and she continues to even blame everyone else from staff. Refusing her mistake, which happens still blames my family and me of non payment. Keeps throwing every loop in the book, saying that's not the card, that's not a receipt from us, this transaction is not in my machine. Instead of admitting a mistake has happened and on her end. Then as we are sorting it all out, delivery drivers keep coming back to complain thier orders are wrong, items are missing, and that same lady/waitress has been giving them thier orders wrong. I love this place. Always consistent, great guac. The carne asada dinner is fantastic, but as a family, our go to is the Cecina Taco dinner....My 4 yo eats three of these tacos by himself. Chips and salsa always good and the staff is always wonderful. Jumbo gold margs have gotten me through more than a few days this year! They're pretty freaking good and easy to drink. I'm so glad they've survived this ridiculousness of a year and I'll keep supporting them as much as I can! read more

I typically only write reviews when places are 3 or above. Home made tortillas and authentic Mexican food is actually delicious. Sanitation not so much. Hair in the food, I guess it happens to the best of us when we cook so I tried to be forgiving and asked for a new plate. Gnats by the restroom and then I saw a what I thought was a huge gnat but it didn't fly, it was a "baby" roach. As I walk back to the table my mom was talking to the waitress discretely. She was sharing that there was a roach under our table. I now wish we had left at the sight of the hair but then I wouldn't be here writing this for you. They proactively comped our food for the inconvenience and I appreciate the gesture but I can't stop cringing at the thought of anyone else having to experience this. read more

My favorite food in the city so far!! The Good- On point Authentic. My in-laws brought me here for the first time knowing my love of sopes and man, these did not disappoint!! Handmade with love, the way abuelita used to do :) the chips arrive warm and the salsa is wonderful. The Bad- Karaoke nights here are unbearable and they're not on schedule because I keep trying, desperately, to avoid them. I'm all for having fun belting out your favorite hits but the volume is just far too high. So high that you cannot hear your waitress or yourself breathe. The Ugly- Curse you Chicago parking!! I wish the lot was bigger and the potholes were less but alas, it's a losing battle. All in all, the place is fantastic and I will continue to come by. You know the food at Condesa is left a lot to be... what's the word... desired? Basically, the sauces are all wrong. It started with the salsa that comes with the chips. It's a tomato-based sauce. It's served warm. It just tasted off. Usually this is a bad sign for things to come, but I was still hopeful at this point that it was just the exception to the rule. We asked for some pico and that was actually good, so we felt better. I tried a little bit of a few entrees... a veggie burrito, cheese enchiladas with verde sauce, and tostada. All of them were... very OK. The staff at the restaurant were great. They seemed to be very hard working and sincere. That's why I'm giving them an extra star. Went here with my husband today and I was happy with the food, but upset with the way the staff was handling these new Covid 19 rules for safety for staff & the customers. I work in the restaurant industry & we follow very strict safety rules. The gentleman behind the register was not only rude but, he had no mask when we arrived, then when he did have a mask it only covered his mouth, no one wore gloves when we arrived nor when they brought our food out. The young lady who was our server was very nice and polite, but also no gloves. I may seem a little too much, but working in the restaurant industry and seeing how many risks we are taking to serve the public, I'm only expecting it be the same every where I go. read more

Highly recommend this place. It's is clean and sanitized and the staff is friendly. It kinda feels you are at grandma's because they are very polite and attentive. The oysters there were the worst seafood ever in my life. I just had one, and couldn't even think about having one more. They were not fresh at all, smelly, and just disgusting. I was craving Mexican food & I stumbled across this place. Appearance is just fine. Clean & right on the corner of a common quiet intersection. Parking was available at 10pm on a Friday night & they didn't close until midnight, so I decided to sit in & eat. Quality of food was decent. I ordered a taco dinner (Mexican style) & they got it right. The rice & beans, however, came out luke warm, but was still edible. My biggest problem was as I was dining in, I saw they had a live dj playing music, but the music was unbearably LOUD. I've seen stories about how restaurants play music at a high volume or keep the temperature lower than room temperature to discourage customers from being too complacent in their dining area, but this was completely over the top. My waiter couldn't even hear my order the first time. I didn't completely finish my dinner because I wanted to get out of there quickly. The wait staff was fine & accommodating, so no real complaints there & the prices were very reasonable. But as for a sit down & eat restaurant, I probably will choose a different location. read more

Que cena sabrosa! If you plan on dining at La Codnessa you better break out your Spanish/English dictionary from high school (too bad I took French, huh?). There is definitely a language barrier, but that is part of the fun and authenticity right? This cute little hole in the wall is located at the corner of Ashland and Augusta, with a convenient parking lot! The atmosphere is impressive and it is small but it is exactly what I was looking for; cheap, authentic and tasty! No chimichangas or Americanized Mexican food here! I had the "Cecina Estilo Guerrero". Definition: thinly sliced, grilled steak (which was not fatty or gristly at all) served with fresh guacamole, pico de gallo and warm tortillas. The tortillas were homemade, warm, soft, fresh and fantastic! Warning their margaritas are strong! Being smart about not driving while intoxicated we only finished half of the pitcher! I think places like El Paisano are much more hole in the wall. But thats ok. I like those holey-Mexican joints. La Condesa is not a taqueria. Let that be stated. You can't come here and get tacos. They just aren't on the menu. Neither is anything vegetarian. So with that said, I went with shrimp fajitas. Which were pretty dang good. A little on the expensive side for a "hole in the wall" (or nick in the wall) at $13, but for seafood, you kind of want that. And they were pretty dang delicious. The highlights of the evening for me though were the delicious salsa, homemade tortillas that were soft and warm, just like abuelita makes! And the other highlight was the pitcher of margaritas. I mean... combining booze and lime, in large quantity, that makes any day for me! The staff was pretty average, not super, not bad. All in all if I wanted a little more specialized Mexican, a lot of it grilled, I'd go back. Or I'd go back just for the company I was with. When the weather's got you down, or you've got a cold or the flu, go to La Condesa for their chicken soup. It is THE BEST. The large order comes with a whole drumstick and thigh in it. It just has so much flavor. You must add the onions, cilantro, and lime juice that they give you on the side, otherwise it's just not complete. That's where the love stops for me though. I'm not crazy about much else there. The steak in their tacos/enchiladas/etc. is nothing special at all. Flavorless in fact. And I'm not crazy about their salsa either.
