Went to dinner at El Guajillo on a Saturday. The restaurant was very colorful, and very lively with many customers. Fortunately, we did not have to wait long for a table. The waitress came with a bowl of chips and salsa verde and rojo, both were awesome though the red was spicier. She took our drink orders, and once she came back, she took our food orders. I got to try the lengua chimichanga, al pastor quesadilla, and birria pizza. All were cooked and seasoned very well, but my favorite was definitely the birria pizza, especially with the consomé to dip on the side. Prices were great, the food was really cheap. The Pizza Birria was amazing. Perfectly meaty and cheesy with a nice and flavorful consome. I have found that oftentimes birria can be a bit bland but that was not the case here. My girlfriend got the churassco mexicano and really enjoyed it. Everyone else in our party seemed to like their food as well. The chips that come out before the food are addicting. I could probably eat 2 baskets of them on my own. The decor is bright, loud, and a bit of an eyesore but the food makes up for it. The service is very quick and friendly. 3.5 stars and rounding down. Conveniently located next to the post office, El Guajillo makes for a nice reward after waiting in line for stamps. A corner location, it's smaller on the inside than it looks on the outside--kind of a reverse Tardis. Inside, and it could be just me, even though the place is wrapped by windows, it also always seemed a little dark on the inside. The darkness extends to the atmosphere with the paintings on the walls here--they're bright and sinister at the same time, which means I like them. Seating is made up of a handful of booths around the two sides, and tables in the middle of the floor. The place needs to be spruced up a little--the floor is dinged up, and the tables sit upon awkwardly, but if they update I hope that they leave the wall paintings untouched. The service is always attentive, cheerful and conscientious. During one trip, I ordered chicken tamales, and I was a couple bites into my first one when I realized it was cool in the interior of the tamal (that's how it's spelled--one Tamal, two Tamales). I brought it up with my server, and asked her if they could be heated up, and she apologized for the temperature, and then rather than heating the originals (which is what I'd suggested), she brought me out two completely new (piping hot) tamales. The chicken tamales themselves have a very good flavor and are not cursed with dried masa that ruins so many tamales. The two tamales option makes a nice appetizer to share too. I like to spoon on either the red or green salsa provided with the totopos to give them a little more pop. Cheese tamales are also available. The Gorditas are a must try. I like the Lengua (beef tongue), and it's always been cut in nice big chunks that are never dry, but always flavorful. I've always felt that cutting up the lengua in tiny pieces which you see in so many other places, destroys the textural component and the diminishes the flavor that accompanies the actual chewing, and El Guajillo gets it right. The three gorditas are thick (per the name) and filling, and are served with lettuce and pico de gallo. The fish tacos here ranked 6th in my expedition to find the best fish tacos in the Hamilton area. The 6th place doesn't mean they were bad, it just means that they aren't the best in town, and regardless of their ranking, I enjoyed them very much and would order them again. The tacos were filled with good sized chunky filets of fish that were well seasoned, but a little salty in places. There was no thick batter, and they were served with lettuce and pico. Good flavor, but extra points are given for the tortillas, which were very tasty after having been heated up on the oiled grill as all tortillas should be. Tortas are also a good choice here. I always get the chicken Milanese torta. Very good bread, a nice sized slab of fried butterflied chicken breast, beans, avocado and lettuce. There's nothing not to like. They're also available with beef. On a recent visit to Guajillo, my complimentary totopos (fried chips) were so salty that I couldn't finish them--a first for me. The salt was laid on so heavily, that I could feel it grinding beneath my fingertips when I picked up the totopos. It's not a perfect place (heads up that there's a 3.5% upcharge for credit card purchases), and there are some areas wanting improvement or consistency, but there are plenty of solid winners served that make it worth the visit. read more

I've been meaning to update my old review after several years and several recent visits here. They opened during Covid times and my first visits were lackluster. About a year ago a Yelp friend mentioned that they had improved, and around that same time another fritnd alerted me to their chicken Birria. I went back to try that and was happy with this new option I hadn't seen at my regular stops. The chicken is just like beef Birria but with shredded chicken, it even comes with the consommé. I've been back a few times for it. My recent fav thing here is the ground beef burrito. Lightly seasoned beef mixed with Spanish rice and black beans, contents seem to include avocado, pickled jalapeño, onions and tomatoes( I leave off the lettuce) This consistently comes out like a perfect burrito for me, and it's a hefty meal. They may be one of the few places where you can even get a simple ground beef burrito in this area. Service has been quick and friendly and it's a clean and inviting place to dine in for a casual meal. As I've mentioned before, Mercer county has become a hotspot for great Hispanic cuisine, and I'd count El Guajillo as one of the many great options. read more

Pretty much the flavor was good and the service as well... just nothing to rave about, salsa was watery and a bit bland and the food was just missing something... we got the steak fajitas and the chile relleno... The place was clean and you pretty much just sit yourself until they come through with the menu, but it was 2pm on a Saturday.... So it could be different. Uh, wow! Stumbled on this gem of a restaurant while searching Yelp for local places to try. The pictures online enticed to to make the short 15 minute drive but the reality is that the pictures did not do it Justice. The ambiance when I entered was very inviting ,clean and authentic. I had the tacos and my son the enchilada. We were both extremely satisfied. I look forward to returning with my wife and see us making this a regular stop in our dinner excursions. read more

This place is top tier. The food is amazing. I preferred delivery the very first time I tried them. It was perfection. I really enjoyed all the items I had that day. I ordered the birria quesadilla with the fried chicharrones (pork crackling). It came with some delicious consome and the rice and beans were so tasty. I had to check them out again the following week. I went in yesterday to the actual restaurant. It's a mixed sized sit down spot. Nice tables as well as some booths for seating. The chairs were nice and comfortable and sturdy. I was seated there waiting for my order. As we walked in we walked straight to the counter and was greeted. I give five stars for the mole sauce alone - crowning it the best I have ever tasted until someone proves me wrong. My husband and I were looking for Mexican comfort food and decided to give El Guajillo a chance again some years after we had tried them last. Not disappointed at all! I ordered the veg enchiladas and it was heavy on flavor and low on the extra cheese and grease, which can make this dish sometimes equal parts guilt and pleasure from other restaurants. I like that I can mix my salad in the mole sauce and my rice with the salad and mole, even though these are well separated in the takeout container. The mole sauce - let's dedicate a moment right here - not bitter, slightly sweet, slightly Hershey's chocolate, savory and bowl licking good. My husband is not a mole person and said next order is 100% mole! He had steak/beef enchilada and was equally satisfied. Loved the hot brown salsa they add in a small container. This girl could not handle the heat nor wanted to interrupt the delicious flavors of her own dish, but if you like heat, this sauce is your friend. We are usually not dessert people but my husband broke down in a moment of weakness and asked for a slice of their Tres Leches cake. All I can say is woah. Woah woah woah. Now that I've had a few return visits since my initial review, I think it is time to up the review from 3 to 4 stars. Our most recent experience was largely positive. I went for the burrito especial al pastor, and it was quite good. My only gripe was that for the money I would have expected a bit more pork, but I certainly didn't wind up hungry. My wife had the three chorizo tacos platter, which came with rice, a 2 oz. solo cup of beans, and the oddest "salad" I've seen in a while (a few leaves of lettuce, one tomato slice, a grilled jalapeño pepper and a grilled onion). The chorizo was flavorful, but a bit dry. We also temped fate and went back for some chicken tamales. As terrible as they were last time, they were delicious this time. Well done there. So, for me this is a pretty consistently 3.5 star experience. The food is pretty good, but there a several better options with the same basic menu in the Hamilton area, and many more far superior establishments serving Mexican and Central American cuisine if you're willing to trek into Trenton. Still, reliable and convenient isn't abad thing, and consistently friendly and fast service gets the round up to four from me. read more

This replacement of the former Lemoncello II kitchen brings Hamilton another middle of the road MexiMerican restaurant right down Route 33 from several other similar choices. Having them close to each other makes this part of town a better destination for those looking for reasonably good South of the Border fare. The menu has most of the usual fast food choices from tacos to quesadillas to enchiladas to sopes, all made with fresh ingredients and served with a smile. There is nothing complicated going on or anything requiring lots of preparation nor your higher sensibilities. It's just good street food acclimated to the Lengua Norte Americano and the local Hispanic population looking for a nosh. My Chicken Flautas (deep fried tacos with ground chicken, cheese and chilies) was topped with shredded iceberg and a drizzle of white queso fresca. After spooning on the green salsa that came with the chips, it was a tasty filling lunch that I washed down with a large glass of cool sweet Horchata. It was all decent, presented well and at a reasonable price of $14 for everything. Have been keeping my eye on this space when I noticed the old italian joint went out and the butcher paper went up on the windows indicating a bit of reno going on inside. Hubs and I gave it a few weeks before checking it out. Upon entering we weren't sure if we should seat ourselves or order at the counter and then sit as we saw some customers standing at the counter looking through menus. Thankfully a simple ask and we were told to sit anywhere. The tables are spread out pretty far, so thankfully had a little privacy. We ordered carnitas tacos, al pastor tacos, and chicken tamales. Fresh chips and two types of salsa with varying heat came complimentary. The green has more spice, it was nice. Soda is by the bottle or can, even water bottles - no fountain. Food didn't take very long to come out and upon first glance the tacos looked great, but the tamales looked dried out and old. While our tacos were decent, the tamales tasted as they looked.....dried out and old. It was disappointing because hubs and I love tamales. I would have loved to have a bit more onion and cilantro on my tacos. Service was very good and the bill about twenty a person after tax and tip. Sadly won't be running back here as it was pretty average to me, but def can see getting some take out if we don't feel like taking the 25 min drive to our fav spot in PA. read more

This place just opened not too long ago so I wanted to give it a try. I ordered the Guajillo Platter, gorditas with Al pastor, and tacos. Overall, the food was pretty decent. I didn't like the gorditas that much and the tacos were good but definitely had better. What I love was the guajillo platter- the marinated pork!! Super good and of course the plantains too!! I would want to come back and try different dishes and other specialty platters!! The place is really spacious so I recommend eating in! They have a TV to keep you entertain while you wait for the food. I think I waited a little longer than I would like for the food to come out and it wasn't that busy either. Last night was the second time I've gotten food from here, first time dining in. The restaurant is super cute and colorful with a good amount of seating for a place that seems to be mostly takeout. The complimentary chips & salsa are amazing - we could have easily demolished three baskets of chips. We shared the chicken flautas which are always good - perfectly crispy! I have always wanted to try birria tacos and finally took the plunge and oh my goodness they were delicious! I can't stop thinking about them. This place is incredible. The Birria tacos are absolutely delicious and so filling. If you ever decide to try Birria tacos , this is the place to get them. The 35$ 10 pack is such a fantastic deal and can easily feed 4 or more people. The churros are also delicious and filled with caramel. All the food is very obviously fresh and so enjoyable. Only possible complaint is that the service can be a little slow, but I understand there are reasons for that, especially given how busy they can be. If I could give them negative stars I would. We called in an order of 4 orders of tacos de birria and steak tacos we asked for NO VEGETABLES on any of the orders. I drove over 20 minutes to pick up the order, when I got home every single order had vegetables. I called them and asked for a refund and they wouldn't unless I brought back the food. I decided to give them a chance to make it right, when I got there they told me they had not made the order, and had my refund in an envelope I walked out and when I checked my refund they had only refunded me $8.62 from close to $60 I had paid. I walked back inside and they looked at me like I was robbing them. They advertise delivery which they do not offer. No way it was a misunderstanding i ordered in Spanish. Beware do not visit this place. I wasted over an 90 minutes of my time plus fuel.... Horrible customer service read more

Most recently the skirt steak was highly grisly, the tortilla chips were dripping with oil, and the queso we order was nothing short of VILE.
