We were driving to Maryland one night and got hungry. Instead of stopping at a rest area, we searched for food nearby. A few minutes drive off the interstate, in a strip mall was Fiesta Brava. Small place, booths that could use updating but what a gem! We got empanadas and pupusas to start. Excellent, the empanadas were big. Then we shared a shrimp dish and a beef dish, the names of which I cannot remember but both were excellent! Service was good, no room for dessert. Overall, excellent. Fresh, flavorful food, good size portions and a friendly vibe. So glad we didn't stop at the rest area!!! read more

Fiesta Brava is a small Ecuadorian house in downtown Hightstown NJ. It is right next door to a bagel joint in a strip center. The large HDTV was tuned to the World Cup while I was there, and it captured everyone's rapt attention. Service was bilingual and very cordial. I took a booth with the menu given me by the woman behind the counter, and waited for her to come over to take my order. I went with the chicken flautas - four wheat tortillas stuffed with a combination of shredded chicken, cheese and chilies, baked until the cheese melted and the tortillas hardened to a crisp, with the edges charred. They were topped with iceberg, crema and I added their homemade salsa from a small plastic cup. I found out that they had changed their offerings to make the rice & beans a la carte, rather than a standard no charge extra to finish the plate. Disappointing, but even more alarming was the $4 charge if I still desired it. That made lunch muy caro, so I declined. Suddenly, the $7 meal was not so reasonable. Too, the kitchen hands left the flutes in the oven too long, causing the edges to burn to near carbon. Still, I liked what I was able to eat. Just wish they had been more attentive in the cocina, and didn't reduce the value of the meal by replacing the rice & beans with lettuce. read more

I was very excited about this restaurant since it said it was half Mexican and Ecuadorian food. The food was great and very tasty. We did came in at 8:30 pm since it said it was closing at 9 pm. Well it's 9:15 and we are all done the lady at the front was very nasty and said that they closed at 9 and gave us a very bad attitude. I suggested that next time we could had taken the food to go no and big deal. Her response was horrible and said no next time. I would no recommend this restaurant base on this experience. When I paid she didn't even leave a pen to leave a tip. No bueno. read more

Did a quick Yelp search. After reading the reviews we decided to venture up here to give it a try. Fiesta Brava is located in a small strip center as you are leaving Hightstown. The interior is early luncheonette without the stools. There's about 10 booths and a few tables. This seemed to be a small operation with one waitress and possibly one chef. We were promptly waited on and opted for a large bottle of sparkling water. We ordered some guacamole and chips to start with. Unfortunately the chips were stale/soggy which definitely was not a good way to start the meal. My wife and I both ordered Mexican Shrimp. It was served with white rice and beans. There were 6 medium sized shrimp on the platter. The beans and rice were pretty nondescript. The sauce which was tasty was prepared with onions. Unfortunately, the shrimp was a little overdone. It was also served with tortillas. We were offered dessert but we declined. The reviews were very positive so we might give this place another try. read more

I've been wanting to come here for a while but never got a chance until today. We got a seat at one of the booths when we arrived. The restaurant is small and very simple in design. It has eight booths in total (four on each side) and there are four two-seat tables that are situated in the middle of the restaurant. The drinks are on the right closest to the back. There's a refrigerator that's filled with bottled beverages and there are three dispensers that have specialty drinks in them. These include pineapple, Jamaica, and peach tea. The restaurant is also does not have the air conditioning on, so the air is very stuffy inside. Daughter ordered Huevos Rancheros, which was 2 fried eggs on top of tortillas with a side of rice and beans. There weren't any tortillas under her eggs. She liked it anyway. As long as she eggs, rice and beans, everything is good. Hubs had 3 lengua tacos, which are beef tongue. He liked it, too. Originally, he was going to order Tripe Stew but there was peanuts in it. I ordered Huevos a la Mexicana, which was scrambled eggs mixed with tomatoes, onions, green peppers and jalapeños. It's also served with white rice and beans. It was pretty good but I wish it came along with tortillas and that it was yellow rice instead of white rice. The rice was a bit bland. Service was friendly and quick. Ba damn!!! I frequented here back in the day when I worked in some small biotech company near Cranbury. The company got absorbed. I had to part ways. So, back in the day before yelp wasn't mobile. I found this place on a weekend for lunch. Its a local place for where only mexican people eat. More like working mexican men. I'm sure gringos come here and I am pretty sure I'm not the only chino to have step foot in this place. I always skip the free chips and salsa. It's just filler. Okay maybe a couple of chips. They are fresh enough that I think are made that day at least. I usually get tacos and a Mexican soda or a hochata if I'm lucky. I was recently there as I was driving my co-worker for a conference. We stopped for lunch here because its so near the turnpike. We both got the chicken poblano. Supposedly, mexico's national dish. It was eh. Seemed like the mole was old/burnt. Or it was just not my thing. I did notice the Mexican customers all ordered the special of the day. The chicken soup. Not the campbells kind but the kind made with a gallina (old chicken). Bones and the film of oil/fat on top of the soup. We were the only out of towners getting something else. I also, ordered 2 tacos al pastor but that was just eh too. I prefer this place over the other mexican place down the road because of the parking lot. 1 time a jerk Highstown police followed me from the Spartan gas station after I visited my father from the nut house. He pulled me over for making an illegal left to this place for dinner. I told him I came from Trenton and was stopping for lunch before going back home in north Jersey. We thought we'd roll the dice on this place. Bit of a mistake; we crapped out. The place is horrifically small. The waitress wasn't very pleasant. We should have left when we got the bagged chips and jarred salsa......I think it was Chi Chi's. (No I'm not kidding). It's akin to an Italian restaurant passing off Ragu as sauce. The enchiladas were OK. The rice and beans left much to be desired. Two words: White rice. C'mon really? The beans were as devoid of taste as the surface of the moon lacks life. Possibly the worst Mexican food and worst service in my experience. Dry tasteless enchiladas, clumpy possibly leftover white rice, beans from a can, no seasoning, and nothing was hot. They were out of salsa but at my request they did give me chips with a small side of flavorless mashed avocado for $3. The service was abysmal. Mostly there was no one in sight. I had to wait at the counter to ask for a fork after the food was served, I was never checked on, and it took 10 minutes to get the check. Aisle will preface this by saying it used to be really good. My daughter and I are there today and it was terrible. It was Thursday lunch. To begin with, the kitchen was out of beef one of two choices on many dishes, the other being chicken. Which is fine except that was what I had ordered for our nachos app. Because my daughter is veg I ordered the meat on the side. The nachos we're amazing in the sense they were the most awful nachos possible. Basically a plate of chips with about 2 tablespoons of beans topped with a pile of iceburg lettuce and two slivers of avocado. I believe I did find a shred of cheese. Of yes, a plate of very dry shredded chicken. And now for the entrees. I received my pork burrito immediately after the arrival of the nachos. Mostly rice. But the meat was absolutely on the verge of rot. My daughter's cheese enchiladas were fine. And for those two dishes and a soda the bill was $24. Stopped in for a snack today. My husband and I both had a chicken tostada. I was very happy because it was not spicy at all. My husband was happy because it came with homemade hot sauce. The tostada was crunchy and chicken and beans were tasty. Nice helping of shredded lettuce and tomato on top, along with sour cream. We will be back for a full meal next time. read more

Upon driving up, this restaurant looks like a "hole in the wall" but don't be fooled. Waitress was ready with menus and quickly allowed us to combine two tables for our party. We ordered chips and guacamole for an appetizer. The chips were made fresh there, hot and out of the fryer! The guacamole was equally delicious. It was a decent sized bowl with fresh onion and cilantro mixed in. My toddler son's taco was quickly brought out and the rest of our food followed. My meal was last as two in our party ordered quesadillas. (I'm pretty sure they only have one press in the back.) But my chicken quesadillas were very good. Fresh pico to accompany them too. Not sure how I ended up here but after reading a few reviews, I figured I'd try it out. Didn't get my hopes up, as I've been disappointed back home. Walking in, it reminded me of small Mexican dives in Chicago. Not fancy but clean. I ordered three different tacos just to have a better overview of their kitchen. Had the al pastor, carne asada and ordered the beef tongue. While they got that ready I ordered some guacamole. It was fresh but in my opinion, it should have tomatoes, jalapeños and a splash of lemon juice or a slice of lemon as mom and dad taught me. Good portion, but the styrofoam plate threw me off guard. I received my tacos and noticed that my beef tongue taco was chicken. Didn't mention it to the server as I figured I'd have some pollo con chicken instead. Tacos were a decent size, well seasoned, and filling. The carne asada should be skirt steak but not sure what cut they use here. All in all, it was decent; if I was hungry, I'd visit the joint.
