Service is friendly and efficient. Orders are made at the counter, or, dare you dare, via QR codes located at the table. Parking is limited, and because it's located between two one-way streets, it can be tricky coming in to or leaving. The Sopes at La Taqueria are a must to try. They're heavily ladened with tasty toppings, and I'd order them again in a heartbeat. The chorizo sope was especially good, and had enough chorizo on it to make two Sopes. Be forewarned that you will not have clean hands after eating them. On another visit I tried the fish tacos. Fish tacos at La Taqueria are the chopped/shredded variety rather than the deep fried filet version. The tortillas themselves were heated well, but were nothing special, nor was the flavor of the fish itself anything remarkable. I expected something more interesting from the place. On the flip side, I also tried a Taco de Tripa, asking for it to be cooked crisp (Tripa in Mexico is pork chitterling, not tripe) and it was very, very (feel free to insert more verys) good, and is definitely a taco I'll try again and again. During our most recent visit, we had the Enchiladas de Pollo en Mole, which brought four enchiladas in a deeply flavored mole with rice and beans. The mole was not sweet like so many other moles in other area restaurants, but was instead relying heavily on the flavors of the chiles. It was very tasty, and a nice change from the usual sweet moles. We also had an excellent Huarache de Lengua, a thick, oval tortilla ladened with beef tongue. I have a feeling my wife will be ordering it each time we return. In addition, we ordered a bowl of the Sopa de Panza y Pata, a soup with a spicy broth and loaded with cow's hooves and tripe. It was a meal in itself, and was also served with rice on the side along with some thick corn gorditas. I was torn between four and five stars here, and if the fish tacos hadn't been such a bust, they'd probably have gotten that fifth star. La Taqueria is definitely in the top tier of local Mexican/Guatemalan restaurants, and will be part of our regular rotation going forward.

I'd known about them for years, but they were kind of out of the way for me. The place is small and unassuming, which gave me high expectations, as sometimes I find myself having lower expectations for a more "Mexican" decorated place (I'm wrong as often as I'm right). As far as the Fish Tacos went, they do not serve the Baja style fried fish tacos that I'd grown up on out west, so it was a downer when the plater arrived and I saw the tacos filled with chopped fish cooked in broth. That said, at least the taco was well filled and the fish had a very good flavor. The broth turned out to be a major issue, as the (very tasty) single layer tortillas were soaking up the broth while I ate the first taco, and the second and third tacos both split at the seams and fell apart after one or two bites. A second tortilla may have prevented this debacle, but I won't order fish tacos here again. I'd have loved a fish soup made in this style. The next visit I tried Tacos de Tripa (fried pork intestines), which is my current go to taco style. They were very good, and I enjoyed the heck out of them. They were nice and crispy as I'd requested, and the excellent tasting tortilla made them an excellent choice. My wife had a cheese tamal that had ribbons of poblanos inside as well, and it was also very good with the poblanos providing a nice balance to the heaviness of the cheese. I'd get both again in a heartbeat. My third visit was at lunchtime, and I opted for a Torta de Chili Relleno--essentially a chili relleno sandwich. It wasn't the first I've ever had, and it's a fave torta when I see them on the menu--which isn't often. The torta arrived with a nice sized chili relleno along with the usual smear of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a couple pieces of queso fresco served on a lightly toasted roll. Overall, the torta was very good tasting, and it went down nicely. However, I wish they used a little firmer roll instead of the soft one they did use. The torta was big and warm, and a crustier roll would have been better. The soft one used was near to collapsing under the weight of the ingredients. Fries are an option on the many torta options for a couple dollars extra. In retrospect, I'd have liked to have added a layer of fries to the sandwich for a little extra kick. All in all, El Gallo Tropical is a place I'll continue to go to. The staff is very friendly, and the menu is extensive (too big?). Although I had them initially at three stars after my first visit for fish tacos, the second (4+) and third (4-) visits have raised them up, and I'm rounding up to a four.

Sometimes they can get greasy but these were very good. The salsa was amazing with just a slight heat to it. The white sauce was very smooth and delicious. I ordered the seafood enchiladas. They were cooked to perfection. The seafood was cooked just right and the sauce was very good. To me this was a very light dinner. Hit the right spot. The rice was a white rice. It was very good. My wife ordered the chicken chimichangas. They were cooked perfect. She said the rice was good along with the beans. We had the Tres Leche chocolate cake. It was very good and the portion was very big. The interior of the building is decorated very cool. It feels just like if I went to Mexico and went to a restaurant. The lunch menu is fairly comprehensive with variations of beef, chicken and pork used as primary ingredients in styles Asada, Empanizada, a la Mexicana and Encebollado. They also do the traditional Tostados, Quesadillas, Burritos, Tortillas and Tacos. I ordered the Pechuga Empanizada (Breaded Chicken Cutlet with Rice and Black Beans), and Jugos Naturales de Pina (Pineapple Juice). The plate came with Black Beans and White Rice. It was very big for a lunch. There were two large, thin breaded chicken breasts, lightly browned, with a wedge of lime for seasoning. A couple of raw onion rings, slices of radish, and a pile of lettuce completed the performance. I cut everything with my fork and enjoyed every bite. All was tasty, complementary, and filling (I did not finish the rice). The Pineapple Juice was cool and refreshing with a nice bite of just juiced pulpy fruit. This was an excellent lunch in a comfortable setting. At under $10 for everything (plus tip), I was very satisfied, and happy that another historic Italian house was now transformed into an equally qualified newcomer from Central America. Buena Suerte!

The employee inquired about each ingredient and I added fajita veggies, pickled red onions and pico to the meal. And this was a meal, a huge fat burrito that couldn't be finished in one sitting(at lunch anyway) all of the ingredients melded with each other, I even liked the spicy and sweet chicken that still seemed to have been seared on a stove or grill. Probably one of the best burritos I've had this year. I also got a side of queso and chips and enjoyed that too. I appreciated that the chips had little to no salt and were fresh and crispy. I walked away thinking how much I enjoyed this simple fast lunch( I was in and out in under 4 minutes) .
