I'd known about them for years, but they were kind of out of the way for me. The place is small and unassuming, which gave me high expectations, as sometimes I find myself having lower expectations for a more "Mexican" decorated place (I'm wrong as often as I'm right). As far as the Fish Tacos went, they do not serve the Baja style fried fish tacos that I'd grown up on out west, so it was a downer when the plater arrived and I saw the tacos filled with chopped fish cooked in broth. That said, at least the taco was well filled and the fish had a very good flavor. The broth turned out to be a major issue, as the (very tasty) single layer tortillas were soaking up the broth while I ate the first taco, and the second and third tacos both split at the seams and fell apart after one or two bites. A second tortilla may have prevented this debacle, but I won't order fish tacos here again. I'd have loved a fish soup made in this style. The next visit I tried Tacos de Tripa (fried pork intestines), which is my current go to taco style. They were very good, and I enjoyed the heck out of them. They were nice and crispy as I'd requested, and the excellent tasting tortilla made them an excellent choice. My wife had a cheese tamal that had ribbons of poblanos inside as well, and it was also very good with the poblanos providing a nice balance to the heaviness of the cheese. I'd get both again in a heartbeat. My third visit was at lunchtime, and I opted for a Torta de Chili Relleno--essentially a chili relleno sandwich. It wasn't the first I've ever had, and it's a fave torta when I see them on the menu--which isn't often. The torta arrived with a nice sized chili relleno along with the usual smear of beans, lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, and a couple pieces of queso fresco served on a lightly toasted roll. Overall, the torta was very good tasting, and it went down nicely. However, I wish they used a little firmer roll instead of the soft one they did use. The torta was big and warm, and a crustier roll would have been better. The soft one used was near to collapsing under the weight of the ingredients. Fries are an option on the many torta options for a couple dollars extra. In retrospect, I'd have liked to have added a layer of fries to the sandwich for a little extra kick. All in all, El Gallo Tropical is a place I'll continue to go to. The staff is very friendly, and the menu is extensive (too big?). Although I had them initially at three stars after my first visit for fish tacos, the second (4+) and third (4-) visits have raised them up, and I'm rounding up to a four.

Service is friendly and efficient. Orders are made at the counter, or, dare you dare, via QR codes located at the table. Parking is limited, and because it's located between two one-way streets, it can be tricky coming in to or leaving. The Sopes at La Taqueria are a must to try. They're heavily ladened with tasty toppings, and I'd order them again in a heartbeat. The chorizo sope was especially good, and had enough chorizo on it to make two Sopes. Be forewarned that you will not have clean hands after eating them. On another visit I tried the fish tacos. Fish tacos at La Taqueria are the chopped/shredded variety rather than the deep fried filet version. The tortillas themselves were heated well, but were nothing special, nor was the flavor of the fish itself anything remarkable. I expected something more interesting from the place. On the flip side, I also tried a Taco de Tripa, asking for it to be cooked crisp (Tripa in Mexico is pork chitterling, not tripe) and it was very, very (feel free to insert more verys) good, and is definitely a taco I'll try again and again. During our most recent visit, we had the Enchiladas de Pollo en Mole, which brought four enchiladas in a deeply flavored mole with rice and beans. The mole was not sweet like so many other moles in other area restaurants, but was instead relying heavily on the flavors of the chiles. It was very tasty, and a nice change from the usual sweet moles. We also had an excellent Huarache de Lengua, a thick, oval tortilla ladened with beef tongue. I have a feeling my wife will be ordering it each time we return. In addition, we ordered a bowl of the Sopa de Panza y Pata, a soup with a spicy broth and loaded with cow's hooves and tripe. It was a meal in itself, and was also served with rice on the side along with some thick corn gorditas. I was torn between four and five stars here, and if the fish tacos hadn't been such a bust, they'd probably have gotten that fifth star. La Taqueria is definitely in the top tier of local Mexican/Guatemalan restaurants, and will be part of our regular rotation going forward.

I was pleased to see that they had my favorite fresh fruit drink, Tamarindo, so we were off to a good start The chicken tortilla soup had a good flavor, but it had no tortilla strips in it, and I had to ask for them. It also had pieces of corn and other veg in too. I know every family has their own version, but I wondered if my new to the job server brought me the wrong soup. It was good, but it was an unusual departure from my experience with the many, many chicken tortilla soups I've had elsewhere. The meal was more than taken to a new level with the main dish, which was by far, one of the best chili rellenos dishes I've had in the area. The chilies and cheese were good in themselves, but it was the red sauce that was the real star of the plate--not super spicy, but spicy enough and super flavorful. Chili rellenos have always been my litmus test for a Mexican place, and this one definitely passed the test. Along with the chilies, there was a choice of pinto or black beans, which is great, because most of the places around here seem more black bean centric, and I grew up on pintos. I would 100% return for this dish. The next visit was for breakfast, and I had the famous Huevos Rancheros, and they lived up to expectations. The excellent pinto beans provided a base for perfectly cooked eggs and a very good house made sauce. If you're expecting the melted cheese covered mess seen in many places, then you're in for a treat. The dish came with a side of potatoes, and they gave me the option of deep fried home fries. I don't like home fries as a rule (they're boring, hash brown wannabes), but the deep fry gave them flavor and a crispy outer layer, something lacking in most home fries. There were a handful of burned ones, but they died for a good cause. Our other dish was a very good California Benedict with a healthy serving of avocado, bacon, and two more correctly cooked eggs. I don't know, but getting an over-easy egg seems pretty hard to get right sometimes, so it's always a small victory when it actually happens. Service was attentive on both visits, and the inexperienced server from my first trip was assisted by a more experienced one midway through the service. Both breakfast plates and the main lunch dish I tried were absolute winners and worthy of repeating. The chicken tortilla soup didn't set my heart aflame, and I wouldn't get it again except to see if it's the same.

With some snow occurring early Saturday afternoon the business only had a few patrons, my meal came out quickly and I was on my way home. My car filled with the enticing smell and I was tempted to look in the bag, but I pressed on. I tried the large clamshell container of potato salad first. Large portion and perfectly cooked pieces of potato, carrot and haricot vert tossed in ample mayo. Not too sweet, no criticism at all on this very good salad. The garnachas looked a little beat up from the ride but easily fixed. Flavor and presentation wise these were very similar to ones I get at just one place in my neighborhood. However the portion size was almost triple, same amount of crispy tortillas, but each was piled high with melt in your mouth ground beef. The large pup was amazing too. This was rice based with cheese diced tomato and probably tilapia. The most unique one I've had. Service was friendly and there was no language barrier. We always do delivery so we called to straighten the issue out and have it delivered today and when we called the restaurant they told it's no one there speaks English. They can't help us. WHAAT?! My head is spinning. I will be back to follow up on this one. Ok I left that so that you could see what my initial problem was, but I am extremely impressed with a quick response from Ricardo, who I believe is one of the owners and the help I got from the restaurant itself. And yes, I found several people that spoke English. And I'm so happy to be able to update this because the food is out of this world. But they did tell me that I have to order through DoorDash that I can't order for delivery through them so just note that And definitely stop by because this food is so outstanding that I don't believe there's any other Mexican restaurant that can touch this I lived in Arizona for five years and I found out what real Mexican food taste like and all the wonderful fresh ingredients they use like the American version of Chinese food. The American version of Mexican can be way way off and that's a shame because Mexican food is so healthy and so fresh when it's made by the right people that you can eat healthy and be extremely happy at the same time.
