On the northwest corner sits Rinconcito Latino, a small, but comfortable 3 meals a day restaurant, run by great people who take pride in their business and welcome the stranger with open arms. There are about a dozen tables. While I was there for a late breakfast several hombres came in, and they all seemed to know the people working there, because they were all received with warm conversation. My server brought me a menu and hot café within moments of my arrival. She spoke very good Ingles, and we communicated with smiling ease. Desayuno Tradicional (Traditional Breakfast) was my choice, and she approved. Three Fried Eggs, Grilled Steak, Black Beans, Fried Plantain, Crema and two Tortillas would soon be placed before me. While I waited, I had the distinct pleasure of drinking their just brewed café. It was hot and strong in a real ceramic mug. Loved it. I felt it flash in my cerebral cortex like I had set off fireworks. All the while, the women behind the counter were stirring large caldrons of soup and sauces for later in the day. It all smelled awesome. A truck stopped out front and unloaded provisions for the kitchen. Large sacks of potatoes, carrots, onions were carried right past me on a hand truck. This place was serious about feeding people. Chicken came out of the oven golden brown and was placed in a large chaffing dish in the water table that would keep it warm. My breakfast was excellent. The thin steak was grilled, but still tender. The over-easy eggs were unbroken until I placed one on top of the beef and began consuming them together. So good! The Black Beans were on the salty side, but when mixed with the egg, they lost their sharpness and became a pleasant mix of textures on my tongue. The Plantain was nicely brown with sweet finish. The large dollop of Crema was like Sorbet to cleanse the palate. Finally, I placed one of the hot, thick tortillas on the plate to soak up the egg/bean/beef/plantain juices. Perfect sponge for capturing the final essence of this exceptional morning meal. To tell the whole story, it must be said that the air conditioning was challenged by the mugginess of the day and the fact that the front door was open to allow the delivery of the day's provisions. So, I was mildly sweating in my shirt and tie, but it added to the ambiance and impression that we could have been sitting in any café in the capital of Guatemala rather than Trenton, and this would have been normal and accepted as part of life. It contributed to the authenticity. I am willing to sweat for a unique experience. It was great to get so far away, if only for an hour. At $7 for the food and another buck for the great coffee, the prices were downright Central American, too.
