If you want some mighty delicious Mexican food - come to Chencha y Chole! I have been impressed order after order from here with it's flavorful plates from the simplest quesadilla to their delicious meats. The best part is that like most local Mexican spots, you will get a delicious and filling meal without breaking the bank. My favorite item on the menu by far are the sopes de chorizo. They are a little (very little) spicy, with fresh slices of avocado, queso fresco, lettuce and beans. The order brings three and you will be so surprised at how filling they actually are. I literally can not come here without getting an order - sometimes I share them. Other items I really liked are the flautas de pollo, unlike in many other places, these are large and delicious. They are topped with a mountain of lettuces, tomato and cheese - making them feel a little healthy. An order is listed under appetizers but it is easily a meal for one. The chicken quesadillas sound super basic, but the quesadillas are hand made tortillas (made here) and stuffed with cheese and chicken. Sooo good! Normally I am not a fan, but these are particularly delicious. We have of course had the tacos as well, all items are fresh to order and have been made with care every time. It is authentic and delicious. As for the restaurant itself, it is a good size for large parties or small parties. The staff is always friendly and they tend to have good Mexican music playing as well. They have a variety of Mexican specialties for drinks and even pan dulce to take home. I highly recommend coming, street parking is also usually available right up front. Also if you are coming here for food, you are well aware of the neighborhood and therefore I am basing my review on my experience with the restaurant itself and their delicious food. read more

Wow I'm so glad I had lunch here today. The restaurant we planned was closed today, so my Mexican friend suggested we go to her favorite weekend place. Parking isn't good and the neighborhood is somewhat sketchy. I wasn't happy to park more than a block away, but all was ok. The place is lively and bright with 8 or 9 tables. Two of us had fabulous carnitas flautas; one had barbacoa quesadillas. Everything was delicious! The star was the guacamole.. Fresh and so well prepared & the chips were perfection. The wait staff were friendly, but I have no idea of their English abilities since I was with Spanish speakers. The menu was bilingual. I'll definitely come back! read more

Friendly service but really poor food. My mole' chicken consisted of undercooked baked chicken topped with a brown glop that had none of the depth or character of an actual mole' sauce. It may well have come out of a can, much like the black beans which tasted exactly as if they had come straight out of a can with no further effort to spice or flavor them. But that was nothing compared to the rice which had an "off" taste that made me suspect it had been left unrefrigerated and gotten spoiled. I'm praying that we don't get sick.... The only edible part of the meal were the toothsome, perfectly griddled corn tortillas, for which we were charged an additional $5. With so many great Latin food places in Trenton, I cannot understand how this place survives. read more

Had verde with eggs, beans and rice. It was okay, not much flavor, nor spicy. The guac was bland no salt, the chips tasted stale. Also I don't even get complimentary chips and salsa, which every where else locally I do. I went on a Thursday during lunch a couple weeks ago. I came because of the reviews. I will say Staff was very friendly but no one spoke English, and it was difficult for me to order and say no dairy or meat. I'm all about supporting local restaurants, but help me help you. Wow!!! Holy moly!! Fantastic!!! Awesome meal. Started with Pozole Rojo soup (pork and hominy stew Garibaldi style. So fresh, so tasty, gentle warmth across your body. The chicken mole was off the charts, meat fell off the bone, the mole flavor a mix of many spices was great. The tilapia a la Veracruzana was the best tilapia I've ever tasted. The fillet was so fluffy, soft and the sauce with stewed tomatoes and peppers enhanced the flavor. The best Mexican food that we've had since moving from NYC. We will be back often. read more

Chencha Y Chole is a very nice Mexican house at the corner of Broad and Cass in Trenton. It has been open for several months and still has the "Grand Opening" signs hanging on the sides of the newly painted triangular building. The odd angle of this intersection created an opportunity for the original architect and city planner to design a structure that fits snuggly in this narrow corner, thus adding interesting perspective to the establishment. Inside is clean and bright and feels like a bit of sunny Mexico right here in River City. The menu is diverse, and the plates leaving the open kitchen are equally colorful, and more importantly, very tasty. I asked for my Hawaiian Torta with Grilled Chicken rather than jamon, and was easily accommodated. The sandwich arrived loaded with bird, avocado, onion, lettuce, queso fresca ,fried pineapple, spicy mayo, and a few other unidentifiables that added to the overall finished product. The toasted Roll made the entire package very enjoyable. It came with good Fries. Most surprisingly delicious was the homemade Tamarindo drink. While I thought I was ordering a carbonated bottled of soda, in fact, I was getting something much better. The Tamarind was cool, mildly sweet and tart, and so very refreshing. It arrived in a large glass and was a mid-brown shade from the tree pods it was reduced from. Also, very high in antioxidants. It is great to be so pleasantly overwhelmed. Serendipity. The food was very Authentic - delicious homemade Mole de Pollo. We also ordered their weekend special, the lamb stew accompanied by two lamb tacos - absolutely delicate in taste and rich in Mexican flavor! We unexpectedly stumbled upon this place coming from the exit in Trenton - the chef/owner Miguel takes pride in his cooking, and we got to sample his special recipes from his hometown. The staff were very friendly, served quickly and the table was complete with everything a 5 star restaurant in Manhattan would have! I hope this place keeps up with their cleanliness, excellent food and absurdly low prices.. When you need a place to stop by for a meal in between NY and DC, Chencha is the place! Loved it! I bookmarked a few places to go on a "Trenton taco tour" and started here. The location is not in the greatest area, but I felt safe and there was plenty of parking. The first thing we noticed when coming here is that it's very clean. Great menu choices. The menu is in English, but much of the staff is Spanish speaking only. We ordered fresh juices, a variety of tacos and some chicken sopes. I really liked the somewhat spicy and limey guac here. Nice presentation and hearty portion sizes. My boyfriend and I were in heaven after eating here, talking about it for a couple days after. read more

Excellent, flavorful Mexican food. I took my son here for lunch today. Service was prompt and friendly. As with all venues in Chambersburg is clientele is local and probably from the same nationality. My son's quesadillas were outstanding, my carne adobato okay. The chicken in the quesadilla had the right mix of spice. My beans didn't taste much like anything. I missed a touch of something on the salad, I think it needed something. The reason for the three stars is that a homeless guy came in during our time, chatted with the server and started collecting the leftovers from the plates on the tables. Not necessary a bad thing but he was so extremely dirty that it really grossed me out. read more

A newer Mexican restaurant in town that definitely satisfies the cravings one might have for real Mexican food. I probably would give this restaurant 3.5 stars but it's ok. Their tortas are super yummy, greasy, and LOADED with all sorts of fillings, just like you would get in the streets of Mexico. The horchata was disappointing, it tasted like it was made from a powder, but it could be that they just put in a ton of sugar, which can give a similar effect. The chilaquiles were so-so. I think if the salsa rojo just had a littleee bit more salt it would've tasted much better. The service is friendly and fast and it's close to our house so I would definitely go back, I hope to try more things on their menu. read more

Discovered this place thanks to a review on Hidden Trenton. I dined here five times in the first week after reading about Chencha y Cholo. It's that good. I can give high marks to the Chicken Mole and Shrimp Quesadillas - these are the best I've had on both. Also their seems-to-be-homemade Horchata hits all the right cinnamon notes without being overly sweet. The tacos Al Pastor are righteous. Carnitas tacos are more pulled pork than crunchy fried pork but still tasty. Less stellar are the chicken enchiladas on their breakfast menu as well as the lengua tostadas / sopes. Guaterico Deli is still my pick for the best lengua in Trenton. The tres leches cake for dessert was decent. Service is very friendly and the dining area is clean and well organized. On-street parking only but I have never had any issues finding a spot. You should eat here. read more

This review is for their satellite branch at 2066 Brunswick Pike in Lawrenceville (it just opened a few weeks ago so doesn't seem to have a separate Yelp listing yet). We noticed the restaurant sign while driving and had to stop and are very glad we did. As it was a weekend, they had the seafood soup special available - it had just the right level of spice to clear your head and was a tomato-based broth filled with mussels, shrimp, fish and even crab. A perfect weekend food! The menu is extensive and other family members enjoyed the tacos and a vegetarian quesadilla. I also really enjoyed the tepache, a fermented pineapple-based drink that reminded me of kombucha. With very reasonable prices, and quick, warm service, we look forward to returning and also trying their main branch. read more

I had their Mole de Pollo (2nd time) for take out. The chicken (thighs) were huge! I wish they had put more mole sauce, which has a bit of kick to it and is really good. I tried this place after reading about it on Hidden Trenton. I ordered the mole de pollo after seeing the reviews on Yelp and because I LOVE mole. The chicken was so tender and the mole was a perfect balance of sweet and spicy. Served with rice, beans, and warm tortillas, it was a simple but delicious meal. I also ordered a strawberry milkshake that turned out to be enormous, but it was so tasty and the perfect thing to balance out the spice of the meal. The only reason I'm giving it 4 stars rather than 5 is because my boyfriend was disappointed with his meal (one of the pork dishes, I can't recall the name of it). However, I had plenty left to share, so he was satisfied and would definitely give it another shot. Certainly worth trying and I hope to return! read more

I really thought I had found a keeper for authentic Mexican food. The name fit, the atomsphere fit, they even had the Vicente Fernandez music in the background. The menu had choices but somewhat limited on the meat choices. I went for a traditional Mexican dish-chilaquiles! While also ordering 3 tacos and my husband ordering a torta. The waitress was friendly and quick, but seemed like she was unsure of some of the food related questions we asked. The tacos came first, and non of them stood out to me. The barbacoa one had the most flavor, but even that didn't impress me. My husband ordered a torta al pastor, which had some huge chunks of canned pineapple that just didn't mesh well. And then there where the chilaquiles, my favorite breakfast dish. They couldn't have done them any more wrong! The meat they served on the side was bland, I don't even think they salted it, the chilaquiles where the soggiest mush I'd ever seen! Oh, if you aren't familiar with chilaquiles, they are fried tortilla chips tossed with red or green sauce and egg, topped with onion, Mexican cheese and cream. I don't even think the tortilla was fried. It was literally mush when I tried to eat it, like pureed baby food. The red sauce was salty and the egg that I had specifically asked to be tossed in there was on the side. Seeing that I am Mexican and fluent in Spanish, I thought the waitress understood my egg request. I guess someone didn't understand, the waitress or maybe the cook. All I can say is I barely touched the meal and will NOT be returning. read more

Yummy yummy tacos, delicious salsa verde. GREAT find. A bit of language barrier the first time meant we got 4 tamales instead of two but that just meant more leftovers yummy (the tamales are a generous size). I loved the green sauce, the red sauce too although companion is not as fond of chipotle chilis which give it a nice spicy kick. Tacos al pastor nice and moist with generous filling. My companion had the sopes, which were a very generous portion of chicken and accompanying filings. Ordered to go, Chicken with Mole and it was great, the order came with rice, but no beans. Never been to a Mexican rest and no beans served with rice. Ordered Tongue Tacos, very popular tacos, but tongue was dry and bland, even thou green sauce it's served on the side, still dry. Grilled Steak was very good, but it's just one thin piece over rice, no beans. I really did like 3 leches cake. I eventually cooked beans at home to eat with the rice, most Latinos can't eat rice without beans. Chef said, I will not be disappointed and will come back, I don't think I will come back. read more

Had a delicious dinner here recently on a Friday night. It probably helps to have some rudimentary Spanish, but wait staff were cheerful and patient with us. I had a really good chicken mole, accompanied by yellow rice, black beans, and tortillas, with tamarind agua Fresca. My husband and sons had equally good entrees. We were all too full for dessert, but could have had flan or tres leches cake. There were baked goods in a case for sale, but not sure what these were. Imagine a chicken breast lightly breaded stuffed with Queso Oaxcaca fried to perfection topped with a white cream sauce that was prepared by the hands of God himself! Having lived in NYC, California, and such---I can say that this restaurant has probably the BEST Mexican food I have EVER eaten. The wait staff was extremely friendly and helpful even with a bit of a language problem. Upon finding our table, we were brought freshly made chips nice and warm served with incredibly delicious green and hot red sauces on the side. My dinner companion ordered tamales for us--chicken. They were big enough that I had lunch the next day. They were amazingly delicious. I opted for chicken sopas next for my main course. They too were wonderful-prepared just as I like. Only one slight problem was that I asked for some raw jalepeno peppers on the side. I like my food as hot as humanly possible. The waitress did forget them though might have been a language misunderstanding. Didn't matter though--the food was wonderful. Had barely any room left but tres leches is my very favorite dessert in the world. If it was the last dessert I ever ate on earth--I would want it from this restaurant. It was so good that my New Year's resolution is to go there at least once a week for dessert AND the amazing meal. Prices were very reasonable. You'd pay double the price in NYC and never get a meal as good as this. If you live anywhere within the area, this is a MUST for you to try. You will not be disappointed.
