I discovered this place during COVID. I'm super picky about my pastries, and this place is so good for traditional Mexican pastries. My teen kids also loved their paleta selection. Tortillas are amazing, and now I'm waiting to try their tamales, since the rest of this town has gone nuts with overpricing less than mediocre tamales for this picky Mexican food eater. After I gave them a poor review, I went back months later. Same woman was there. Greets me but that's about it. What really ticked me off was I got sweetbread and two square cakes. She didn't separate them or put wax paper, she put them in the bag as is. When I opened the bag at home, the cakes were upside down and got the icing everywhere. The pastries are ok. Very overpriced. As she was packaging my picks, she leaves a cookie on the tray as she's ringing things up. She sees the cookie and ignores it. Im looking & waiting for her to it in the box; after she noticed I was looking, she finally puts it in the box. Also she's is not very welcoming. Very rushed & assumes people can speak Spanish. Won't be returning and will definitely get my pastries elsewhere. Also, she asked me if I wanted a receipt and I said yes because why almost 30 dollars for some pastries. She tears off the paper from the register. I get home and look at the receipt and its not my own; its the customer's before with card info and etc. A big No Thanks for this place. Just moved to the area and drove by on my way to work. I was so excited to stop by the next morning to bring some pastries in for my coworkers. It was my first time ever going to a bakery like this where you self serve. The lady with the tight bun hairstyle was soooo RUDE. I am a cheerful and friendly person, and I get along with everyone. She wouldn't say a word to me. Even still, I kept it super cheerful and polite and even wished her a good day. My coworkers enjoyed the pastries. Second visit, I took my family on a Saturday. The same lady was chatting it up and extra smiley with a Hispanic gentleman. As soon as he left, she was completely rude to me and my family. She wouldn't say a word to us even though we wished her a good morning and a good day. She over charged me ringing me up for 12 cinnamon twists and I got a variety of plain donuts and a few speciality. My husband was very upset in the car because he couldn't believe how rude the lady was although I kept my polite friendliness towards her. At first I thought maybe it may be a language barrier, but no, it wasn't. I have so many Hispanic friends, some who have familia that can't speak English, and nobody has ever acted the way she did. She is just down right rude. Strolling thru the comments, I see I'm not the only one who has experienced this rudeness. It's a shame too. Because I won't be back. This business should move her to the back if she is going to have an attitude towards certain customers. Your customers are what keep doors open. No need to be rude especially when you're being treated with such cheerful kindness. I'll have to find another small business to support. Again, it's the lady with the bun pulled tight. read more

Stumbled across this bakery because I had to take a detour off of 35 on my way to work. I make it a point to stop by anytime I have a detour. Apple fritters are the best I've had in a long time. This is the third time and last time I come to this bakery. The past two times I figured it was just bad luck. But it seems like a trend that on Sundays they have no problem selling all stale bread. I bought one maranito, two chamucos, one jelly roll and one cookie with sprinkles. ALL of them were stale. I was going to buy the pink bread but I saw that the frosting had started to run into the cake, which is a clear indication that the bread is old (that should have been my factor in not buying there). Anyways, this happened the last two times, too. I called them to ask about this and they just said "Sorry". If they didn't do anything about the last two times, I doubt they will do anything about it now. Lesson learned. But I'll definitely be taking my business elsewhere instead of paying so much for two day old sweet bread. read more

Went to El Folklor Bakery this afternoon. It was my fourth Mexican bakery visit in San Antonio. I didn't find anything special about this place. We purchased a lot of their pastries. They were terrible. The good reviews were n here must be fake reviews or the people making these positive comments have never been to a good bakery and have low standards. I have been to Mi Tierra restaurant downtown; they have a decent bakery. I was raised in a larger city with many ethnic choices for baked goods; I know what good bakery products taste like. This place is absolutely terrible. I will never visit them again. I've included the aftermath of my bad experience in the photo. I bit into and chewed out $20 worth of baked goods. Not much money but not worth the $2 it took to make this stuff... skip this place and spend your hard earned money elsewhere. read more

Decent pan dulce. It's not extraordinary and you may get day old bread in the fresh section and sold at normal price. May be best just to get the packaged day old bread for a deep discount. Tortillas aren't bad and buñuelos are brought from somewhere but not bad. Haven't tried their cakes or American doughnuts, so can't say much about that... We go quite a bit bc it's convenient but recently I've noticed the prices have gone up. It's about $1.30 per regular sized piece. Also, check your receipt, especially if total was a bit high! Lately it's been higher than normal and noticed they charged for two extra pieces of bread. I'm not sure if it was intentional or a mistake but I didn't ask for a receipt the previous time and it was also seemingly a bit too high for what I bought. ASK for a RECEIPT and check it! read more

Heard how great this bakery was and decided to get a birthday cake there instead of making my own this time. Walking in everything looked and smelled delicious, was also clean in front. Not a large selection of cakes, but all looked very tasty. Once wa got it home and cut into the cake, it started going south. The cake was extremely dry, may have been a few days old by the taste of it. I paid the made today price, expected it would be fresh and moist. Also it had a burnt flavor inside. I think it was coming from the thin inner layer of chocolate. Very disappointed, except for the fancy icing detailing, I could do a lot better out of a box. I did not try any of the beautiful cookies or doughnuts. I hope they keep them fresh. read more

9/30/16 We had family in so, of course, we came here to get breakfast for the weekend! We bought 4 kolaches, 20 pastries, 2 dozen pork tamales, & 2lbs of Barbacoa (with lots of corn tortillas). Plus 2 frozen fruit bars for the nephew. Total = $60. Given everything we purchased and enough for breakfast for everyone for 2 days ... WE SCORED! And, yes, they speak English as well as Spanish so all good! I'm picky about tamales. These were really good! We loved them! The Barbacoa was PERFECT again. They know how to make Barbacoa! I searched on yelp for a bakery that would have pan de muerto for our Day of the dead celebration which was November 2. I am new to this area so took a chance and called first , looking for Mexican bread is not easy. I was thrilled to find out that I was in luck , the woman who answered told me they did have 5 left, but that they would sell out fast. I went and picked one up for my family's celebration . I am so glad I did , as soon as my grand daughter arrived she asked for the bread. It was perfect and delicious. It had a lemony taste along with the sweet taste of sugar and other ingredients added. It was topped with a sugary sprinkle on top . I will continue to visit this delicious bakery from now on. Thanks for a nice dessert for our evening of celebration. read more

So I'm gonna start off this review by saying that my dad is a regular customer so I figured I'd have a better experience... Went this past Wednesday to order a cake for my aunts birthday. One of the girls took my order, charged me and gave me a receipt saying that I had payed. Thursday afternoon I get a call saying that they actually didn't charge me, but refunded me money instead. I was also told that because it was one of the girls fault they were gonna have her pay for it. Of course, I was still gonna go and pay. Well I'm in the area an hour or two earlier than what they had said the cake would be ready so I called to see if maybe by some chance it was done. Turns out the girl who answered the phone is the same one who took my order. She says "oh yeah, I remember you. We didn't charge you correctly so I'm pretty sure we didn't make the cake." What?! So she says to call back in 5-10 minutes to make sure that they actually didn't make it...yeah, right! I'll be taking my business elsewhere! So disappointing! read more
