I may have caught them on a bad day. but the food was bland, and I was not a big fan of their chips and salsa.

There used to be a national chain called Chi Chi's..this place reminds me a lot of it. The food is good. Not Amazing, but worth t he occasional trip. In a factory town in Muncie Indiana this would be five stars.... but because this is Texas and there's a lot of Great Mexican to be had... it is simply good. My favorite things there include their chips and salsa (they have a nice hot blend) and the queso. Most of the menu after that is forgettable but nice. The waiter we had was awesome. read more

A solid four and a half stars for El Fenix! I have been going to EF for many years at this location and have never been disapointed. Good food, good prices, and good service from a staff that, for many of them, have been there for years. The biggest problem I have with the location is parking. They share a parking lot with Olive Garden, Hooters and a strip mall with a popular antique store, so it can be a chore at times to find parking. The food, though, is great. It has been a while since my wife and I have been to el fenix. I believe they changed hands a couple of years back and there seemed to be a drop in quality, taste etc. She ordered the chilaquiles and I went with their chicken nachos. The staff did a great job keeping up with our drink and salsa refills. Food came out and we were pleasantly surprised to see that they seemed to have retuned to their original standards. I have been coming to El Fenix since I was a child in the late 50's Last night I was with a group of 4 people. The waiter we had was having trouble understanding us so we stopped a manager and told her that we were having trouble ordering and needed a waiter with a better command of the English language. She seemed offended but said she would take care of us. She simply went back and got our appetizer and brought it out and put it on the table sharply and walked away without saying a word. We spoke up and asked for some jalapeños for our nachos and she brought them back after a few minutes. Once again placed them on the table sharply and walked away without a word. That was the last we saw of her. The same waiter took our dinner order and brought it out. The manager never even came back and checked on us. She was standing at the hostess station when we left and did not speak either. Two tables around us overheard me asking for help from the manager and said they were having trouble communicating with the waiter as well. I don't blame him, he was doing the best he could. Also, we asked for corn tortillas and butter and we were almost through eating before we got them and we were through eating before we got the butter. My request had nothing to do with ethnicity it had to do with the service we and the other customers were receiving. I don't know why the manager would have taken it any other way but she obviously did. All of us at the table got cold food (room temperature) but did not say anything. My girlfriend and I came here for a good Tex mex dinner and started out with getting two Dr peppers we didn't order and chips that were stale and queso that was supposed to be homeade but unfortunately tasted like velveeta. We received our order quickly but I believe that was only because our food tasted as if it was cooked this morning. For example the steak was chewy and the beef picadillo was cold. Been waiting to try this place for a while, we finally did. Service was great. We were seated immediately, and our order taken quickly. Food did not take long, and our server Moises consistently refilled our drinks and chips and salsa. My wife and I both had the 'Special Mexican Dinner' ($11.69) which came with two tamales and a cheese enchilada in chili con carne sauce; a cheese enchilada in queso sauce; a beef taco and rice and beans. All in all it was pretty good. The tamales had an unusual flavor -- not bad necessarily, just something I wasn't used to. And the neon sign out front was pretty cool. Ordered the Fiesta Burrito with shredded chicken, chili con carne with a side of queso. Burrito was excellent and the Chips n Salsa were great. Elenita from Columbia was a simply wonderful server. Very polite and courteous. She told me about the employee discount program for companies so my entire office can get a discount when dining here. We'll definitely look into that. read more

My fiance' and I frequent this particular place at least once a month. It's sacred to us as we had our firdt date there. For the most part, it is pretty awesome, however, every once in a while, something obnoxious happens. The last time we were actually in the restaurant to eat (we ordered it to go last night), the waiter we had was beyond terrible. Didn't act like he wanted to be there, just meh. I asked for extra chile con carne and he brings it before the food even gets there. Our food comes, and my rice (my second fave only to the tamales) was hard and unedible. Never before in 15 years of eating there (even before I met my fiance) has this happened and believe when I say I was livid. Of course, the waiter was nowhere to be found. When he finally appeared,imagine my annoyance when, instead of apologizing outright and promptly fixing it, he proceeded to hem, haw and argue. Now, I had just been at work all day and had spent the evening playing with my two year old which is equally tiring and the last thing I wanted was someone arguing with me. Granted, he did fix it,finally. But,he was a butt about it. However, with all that being said, we have found a server who has gone above and beyond and makes a point to greet us every time he sees us,whether he's on the clock or not. Chips and salsa are okay. But, the salsa bowls are tiny and hard to use. Entree portions are tiny also. Chicken Fajitas for one is more like a snack. One small side of the breast meat sliced along with mass servings of beans and rice for $13? They are just about giving away chicken breast in the grocery stores now, but El Fenix acts like it's Beef Tenderloin! Forget this place, save your money and find better, or eat at Home! I have been to El Fenix on Webb Chapel in Dallas, El Fenix on Beltline in Addison and El Fenix in North East Dallas on Skillman. Well yesterday, I went to El Fenix in Plano, and I must say I received horrible service. Upon arrival, we were seated. (We were a group of 8) The server dropped off one set of chips and 2 salsa containers and left. No hi, hello, welcome, nothing. How exactly does one set of chips and 2 salsa containers accommodate a table of 8? She came back about 5 minutes later, with 2 additional sets of chips and salsa and proceeded to take our drink orders. The waitress looks like she's having a bad day, she's not friendly or warm towards us in even the slightest way. She makes a mental order of our drinks and appetizer and leaves. Sure enough she messes up on a drink and has to go back to correct it. The appetizer was the guacamole and cheese combo and it also was below my expectations. There was more lettuce in the guacamole than actual avocado and the cheese dip was cold. Its funny that the appetizer also took time to come out that we were already down to crumbs in our chips and she didn't replace them at that moment. She took our order and left, and eventually brought more chips. When our food arrived, two bad things happened. My husband and his brother both got the exact same order of fajitas yet one had more meat on his plate than the other. The portion was small and pitiful for being said dinner size. If they would of chosen the lunch portion, it probably would of been 3 fajita strips. The second thing that happened was that my niece and nephew had both ordered the chicken nuggets and fries. Well one received a dipping container with ketchup and the other didn't, but catch this, the container that we did receive was used! Used container. How unsanitary is that? We knew it was used because the container was less than half full and there was crumbs in there as if someone had already dipped something in there. My husband asked a separate server if that was how they normally served ketchup and he looked extremely embarrassed, apologized and said he would get us new containers and left. My husband flagged down the manager on duty (Alex) and asked him if that was the way they served the ketchup and the manager replied with a confident, YES! instead of apologizing for giving us a used container with close to nothing , already fingered ketchup, he got a mocking attitude and offered to give us more. Our server returned with the other server with new ketchup and left. The manager just shrugged it off and went back to walking around doing nothing. We were all pretty angry to at the fact that our table was overcrowded because the server didn't take the time to clean off the table of the used appetizer plates or 3 empty chip bowls until we asked her to. We looked visibly angry and the manager walked by and asked if everything was okay, we replied no, and he just walked as if we had replied yes. My food was great! I had the cheese enchiladas with fajita on top. My sister got the shrimp and chicken fajita combo and that was cold and the shrimp tasted rubbery. Our drinks didn't get refilled, until we asked. She knew we were visibly upset that at the end of our lunch, she dropped off 3 desserts for the kids. We finished up and left. I hate not tipping so I had to leave her extra money when my husband wasn't looking or else he would of been pissed. I would most definitely not recommend anyone to eat here. The servers all look so unhappy and channel it through their service and the food is decent but not great. read more

El Fenix - Their pathetic order of dinner fajitas. - Mexican Near Me - Plano, Texas

Based on my experience, El Fenix is decent. I love me some authentic Mexican food, none of this Tex Mex stuff, although I hear that they do offer Tex Mex dishes. At any rate, awesome prices for the two of us as it was under $22, and we had full plates (lunch special, enchilada w my choice of sauce or chili con queso plus beans and rice 7.99) plus guac on the side, complimentary salsa n hot fresh chips. I gave El Fenix a 2 however as my beans tasted aged or old or like old refrigerator that has no baking soda inside or that has some really old baking soda inside. IDK but they were not as fresh as they could have been. Also, I got a pecan praline, they're at the register and are shaped into a ball, looks all moist and good and caramelish(my own word)...well, I got it home only to realize that it's a ball of high fructose corn syrup, and that is a big no no for me. These should be made with real sugar as they use to be. In addition, I requested chili con queso atop of my enchilada, and they brought me a watery looking cheese sauce with some tomatoes and bell peppers sparingly mixed in it, and put that on top of my enchilada. It was lunch time, I didn't want to send it back and it come back worse off or take time out of my lunch break to address it, so I just ate it. It smelled better than it looked or tasted. But the other ppl there were grubbing, I may have to give it a second chance...after all, it wasn't BAD~~~~...I think they just had a bad day or something. read more

What happened El Fenix?! This WAS always the go-to Mexican with good food and fast service, but Hubby and I showed up a couple of Friday nights ago to an uncrowded restaurant. There was no hostess in the front, simply a young girl at the cashier counter. 5 then 10 minutes elapse. Hubby and I are still standing at the hostess station. Cashier girl keeps talking into a microphone for someone to come up front rather than taking the 10 steps around the cashier counter to seat us. Waiters are walking by staring at us, but not one person greeted and seated us. I turned to the cashier girl after 10+ minutes and made the comment that I guess they are not seating for dinner tonight. She told me to wait a minute. No thanks, Hubby and I walked out and went to On the Border across the street. A taco is a taco, but service is what distinguishes a return visit. No service = we will not be back. read more
