This place as compared to Versailles for my review on my other Cuban Restaurants, is pretty close in quality to that. The menu is similar and has the famous: vaca frita, roasted garlic chicken, ropa vieja plaintains and basically the famous black beans. I ordered vaca frita and it was not bad. The only issue was that the flank steak was not fried crispy although the amount of steak was enormous. The black beans they had tasted canned but am not sure. It had a weird after taste to them. The prices are also high, close to 20$ per meal and you're getting the same quantity as a Chinese fast food take out. The customer service was nonchalant. Although the pandemic is rampant, the interior was quite nice inside. The food filled me up, I wasn't much a fan of the rice and my stomach became bloated. The taste is not bad either. The plaintains were nicely sized and tasted just as good as Versailles. The parking lot outside is pretty small and is surrounded by other small chain restaurants. However, it is difficult to get inside the parking lot due to the small opening to get there blocked by a crowded street. Street parking elsewhere and bigger parking lots walking distance abundant. Healthy I wouldn't say so, but if you like Cuban food, I would give it a shot. If not or have not tried it, it's better than fast food. read more

The Beef Empanadas were suprisingly good. I really liked the flavor as well as the thin flaky crust, not thick and doughy like some. And there was no need for a dipping sauce, they were perfect as is. And because the Beef was so good, it really made me want to try the other Empanada flavors as well. The Media Noche was ok. The sandwich plus fries made for a substantial meal. However the sandwich itself didn't wow me, I actually prefereed the fries. Cuban food never fails! To begin with, had a sangria, loved it! To eat, I ordered a 1/2 chicken which came with arroz, frijoles y bananas fritas. Just the taste alone of the chicken made my mouth water! It was garlic and lemon juice, topped with onion. Sooooo good! EL doesn't disappoint whenever we come to have a nice meal. Came on a Sunday early afternoon and the place was jumping. We had tostones, rice and beans, and half a chicken on butter garlic sauce. The chicken had the crispy skin and juicy inside, and the onion slices had that nice touch. The meal over all was very satisfying. They also have the liquor license which was a plus for us! We had the pina colada and the mojito. The pina colada could have used an extra shot of rum but otherwise it was Bert good. The mojito I definitely tasted the rum and it was just right. I'm so sad that El Cubano is going down hill... they started off so amazing!! I am an Uber Eats/Door Dash girl but I also sometimes pick up my food. Specifically, with delivery, my orders have become routinely messed up... missing and/or incorrect items the last 3 deliveries in a row! Tonight I requested no beans and instead of not giving me beans they mixed beans with my rice so now I couldn't eat my beans nor my rice (haven't tolerated beans since gallbladder surgery) and my chicken was very, very dry!!! My plantains were even dry! The entire plate went in the trash! I kept my two Materva sodas I hope they fix whatever is going wrong over there but I won't be coming back for at least a few months and then maybe I'll try one more time to see if they got back on track! Owner suggests ordering directly from them but 1. They don't deliver and 2. ALL other restaurants I order from call if they are confused and don't understand something. Nonetheless, the errors are ongoing and getting worse. Last time I ordered several Materva & received one. It seems obvious they aren't trying/paying attention but have excuses... not impressed! read more

This was one of the easiest 5 star reviews I've done. I've been missing out on Cuban food for so long! My fault though, this place has been for a long time now and I just never got around to trying it. The only Cuban food I've had is from Porto's but I get the Cubano sandwich there. I got the roasted pork combo that comes with rice, black beans, fried plantains, and onions. Cubans really love their onions, almost every dish pictured had a lot with it which I don't mind. I love onions. When I was a kid I used to just take a bit out of onions raw lmao.. I was a weird kid. Anyways.. every component of this combo was amazing. And the pork was cooked perfectly! Idk what they cook it in but it had such a unique flavor, juicy, soft. My first bite was the beginning of a possible new addiction. This meal's got me wanting to sing Havana by Camilla Cabello lol.. but she was in love with a person and I'm in love with food. The roasted pork meal was $16. Worth it! We were out and about on January 1st and not many places were open, however I called up El Cubano (where I wanted to try anyway) and got someone who said they were open normal hours. So we went on over...for anyone who has not visited it is located across the road from the Mercedes dealship in Valencia. Parking is there, but the spots are tight. There are several other eateries in the same strip mall location, but don't pass up the opportunity of going here or returning. We came in around 1 pm and were promptly greeted and were given a choice of seats. Service throughout the time we were there was friendly and prompt as well. Having not been for Cuban food in a while it took a few moments, but we decided on the Chicken cutlet for my wife (breaded and fried) served with rice, black beans and plantains and for myself the El Cubanisimo sandwich which is served on Cuban bread toasted with a slice of pork, ham (no it is not the same), Swiss cheese, topped with mustard and mayo and pickles. This was served with fries. We also started off with something called the Papas Rellenas for $5.99 on the appetizer menu which are mashed potatoes with meat filling rolled into balls and then breaded and fried. It was served with I think was cilantro sauce...whatever it was it was green and delicious. So those were eaten very quickly and I would definitely get them again. There were so many choices on the menu it was difficult to choose but we loved both dishes and I am looking forward to coming back again for the lunch specials. Fantastic! We were looking for a place with delicious food on our way back from lake Tahoe. We were not familiar with the Cuban rendition of oxtail stew but this dish was simply amazing. Meat fell off the bone and was extremely juicy. We also had a side of black beans and a sampler plate, both delicious. Inca Kola and Yerba Mate sodas to complete the meal. Dessert? My husband and I had another delicious dinner at El Cubano last night. I don't know why we always forget about this family run gem. As usual, I filled up on the amazing appetizers and took home my entrée. My favorites include the potato balls which have a crispy outside crust with soft creamy, mashed potato-like layer, and then a good portion of savory ground beef in the center. The empanadas, and the croquettes are my second-place favorites.. The roasted pork entree is tender and flavorful and you get a large portion with onions, rice, beans and plantains. I also love the crispy skin on the roasted chicken entrée. My husband prefers it covered with garlic sauce, but I like crispy. Although the plantains are usually dessert enough for me, we got to try the Cuban flan and it was excellent! A nice firm custard, and not too sweet. Our server Mike was great and made sure everything was to our liking. We learned that he is the owners' son who pitches in to give them a night off. SCV really needed a New restaurant other than the typical places we have all over town. El Cubano is definitely a spot everyone should check out. Honestly my favorite Cuban place. I used to go to one in Glendale years ago (corner of Victory and Western) but they fell down in quality IMO. I started just going to Portos to get their deli and bakery stuff, had given up on having a go-to place for Cuban food other than the enjoyable take-away stuff from Portos. The first time we tried El Cubano, they were brand new. It was good, I felt like giving them a couple other tries. They have only gotten better. I think the location (being in a strip mall) might keep people from visiting. But that would be a mistake. My husband is a freak about cleanliness, and he went here a few times with his coworkers and brought me back because "it's really clean and the plantains are delicious".
