This is a tough one to get started. Given to us by Liz Lambert the hotelier, and hospitality guru. She does stuff right, with flair and creativity. Usually, you can expect the bar to be set high at her properties. El Cosmico is now 17 years old. Hard to believe since ive been keeping up with it in hopes of one day staying here. I finally made the trek way out to southwest Texas and it was imperative I stay at El Cosmico. Part campground, pasture, motel army camp, unique is an understatement. You have your choices of several types of stay be it, Teepee,Vintage House trailer, Safari tent,Yurt and others. Plans are in for an expansion next year involving 3D printed structures! I chose the Yurt this trip. Even though there was a common bath, I still wanted to experience the yurt. Im glad I did. Each one has independent climate control, heat, and air. I needed it one night as it got down to 32 degrees. it was interesting going out in the cold night air to the restroom!!! Not for everyone but, if you want to Glamp, this is definitely a great option if you're coming this way. The front lodge office has a great fireplace, free coffee, wifi, and a great place to hang out and meet new travelers from across the country. Easy check-in with carts to haul your possessions to the Yurt etc, it's a very easy pleasant stay. Highly recommended for the unique experience it is.
I read mixed reviews but booked a yurt for 2 nights on a drive adventure. What a great place! Very magical and perfect for me and 2 dogs. The yurt was equipped with a big bed, a sleeping size couch, two side tables and a table at the foot of the bed. It had heat, AC, electricity and a cute deck with table and chairs. Communal bathrooms, kitchen and showers all quite functional and clean. The grounds are so well kept while it maintained its funky style. The options are many for different shapes and sizes of accommodations. It's right in town but feels far away. Great staff, convenient and just plain groovy. I went in early August and was surprised by the awesome weather!!
We loved this property! So much variety in unique places to sleep. We got a retro camper, but everything else looked equally fun. The only thing not fun is an outdoor shower when it's cold out! We def skipped out on that! They do camp fires, live bands, hammocks, all the things. They have a bar but no food is served on the property. The town is so close it's perfect. When in Marfa this is a great lodging option.
Winter stay in one of the trailers. Kinda worried reading other reviews but this place was outstanding for the Southwest Slow vibe I was going for. Having done other camping experiences in the Southwest, I was definitely prepared for a lot of DIY (food, heat, toilet stuff). This place had enough of the essentials (heat, coffee, toilets) that it felt like a fancy camp without losing the "roughing it" vibe that's integral to SW "outdoors" experiences. The main building has a boutique shop, comfy couches, and good heat (again, winter stay) as well as a nice cup of coffee in the morning. Large trailer fit two adults and a kid; could have brought the dog and fit nicely. Two burner stove, very small fridge, and a big hot water tank made doing my own food easy without taking up all the inside space. Beds were comfy, warm, and clean. Heat worked well. Old trailer so the window and door seals were meh but the heater and warm blankets made up for it. If you go in winter bring some slippers or slides - the floor gets cold! Bring your own entertainment. This area is not a scene - classic camping in that you need to make your own fun. Books, puzzles, etc. Trailer had lots of outlets and a great Bluetooth radio speaker so music can play all day and night if that's your thing. I'm not sure I'd come out here in the middle of the summer because being in a trailer all day when it's 100+ isn't great. But this place would be a lot of fun to try in spring or autumn as well. Definitely an Experience and one that's worth a stop if you're in the region.
El Cosmico is THE place to stay when you're visiting Marfa. Before you make the journey to west Texas, here are a few tips: 1. I would suggest setting up your own tent instead of booking a tent/yurt/trailer/teepee. You're technically still "glamping" with all the "amenities" included (ie: communal bathroom, one wifi spot, fresh coffee served in the morning) minus the extravagant costs 2. Pick your poison, either suffer the smoldering heat in the AM and cool down in the evenings (summer, spring, fall) or freeze in the AM & PM (winter). 3. Pack light! Paths are NOT paved, but rather unpaved via gravel (suitcases are a B to go back & forth) 4. Bring your own food & drinks, don't bother purchasing at the shop as they up-charge (still water costs $7) 5. Bring a flashlight or any other camping gear you have. Though there are some solar paneled lights along the paths, they are very dim. 6. Bring your own personal wifi, as wifi is only available at/near the shop/lobby We stayed in the Safari tent which included a queen bed, one extra thick blanket, one standing fan, two lamps, two towels, a trash bin, one dim light fixture, outlets, a wooden bench, console table and chair. Warning: NO A/C! We arrived at the normal check-in time (3 PM-ish), but noticed not many people were here. There's a reason why: it is scorching hot in the summer! Crowds started rolling in around 6 PM and later (shop/lobby closes at 8 PM). There are communal showers and toilets on the grounds, and yes, hot water IS included. Surprisingly, all were clean! What was also a nice touch was seeing the usage of Dr. Bronner's Soap everywhere (it's truly an all-purpose cleaner). There is also lots of space to take walks and see the grounds, our pups loved it! Unfortunately: you can hear the train and cars run, as they are located next to the highway.
Wow! Let me first start with, i read the reviews after already booking and got worried. Upon arriving, seeing the Pride flag on their pole and though out the city relieved the anxiety! Upon check in, Angie was so friendly and nice, and gave excellent recommendations. First day, we came in around 4pm to a couple walking around in towels, and a women standing in her Safari tent shirtless. I was curious to at first did i check into a clothing optional, but figured oh, she air drying from her shower! Anyhow we stayed in a tent, and it was just beautiful! It was raining and storming and we were worried at first but it bypassed and was just an excellent evening! 2nd day, we stayed in a yurt! What a beaut! The folks out and about we're so friendly, the bathrooms are very private and the showers are easy to use and comfortable temperatures. The place was neat, cleanliness and pure quiet. When they say, stay on the path - stay on the path because there are a lot of grass stickers! The hammocks are nice, the little kitchen area was good. It def was a safe and secure place and people were trustworthy and friendly. The only thing i would suggest, are two things - fire pits, bbq grills by the teepees, yurts and Safari tents AND because it's so hot, some steel stock tanks to cool off in around the property! Haha excellent place! Def will be back! Not as loud as people were saying, throw on a fan and get some white noise and you'll sleep excellent. It's def really quiet, the only loud noise you'll hear off the road are the annoying loud folks who want to drive with their exhaust all loud but the fan helps - and everyone else is fairly quiet around the camp site.
Traveling west from Austin to Phoenix, my wife and I stopped in Marfa for 2 nights to explore this wonderful, west Texas town. We stayed at El Cosmico in one of their teepees in February. The first night was VERY windy, so it was loud sleeping at night, but in a relaxing and calming way. With the fire pit going, plenty of blankets, and our electric mattress, we were able to stay plenty warm during the cold nights. We rented the Dutch tubs both nights and absolutely loved capping off our days under the stars. Highly recommend getting a Dutch tub reservation. The staff was extremely friendly, the checkin and our process was super easy, and it's in a great location to explore the town.
This place is so dreamy! It feels like we're back in the 70s! The trailers were my favorite but all the options - yurts, tents, tipis, etc were thoughtfully created. The XL Trailer was huge, with it's own bathroom and kitchen. It even had a nice seating area and a full closet. The outdoor shower didn't feel clean enough to use. And I have the same feedback for their shared facilities - wish there was a bit more upkeep of it. The they so many hammocks to enjoy sunsets from and your own outdoor seating area too. The second night we were in a yurt and it didn't hold a light to the trailer. It was pretty but dimly lit. It was on a raised platform so we didn't have much of an issue with bugs, but the bathroom was a turnoff. The common areas are nicely designed, with free WiFi.
Magical magical place. I can only imagine how much more awesome it would be without all of the restrictions. Stayed in a safari tent-- it was cold (went in November), but the bed (with a mattress!!) was heated!! So obviously we were glamping. There's electrical outlets, fans. Other accommodations you can book: vintage trailers, teepees and tent campsites. There's a communal kitchen area, hammocks, and plenty of bathrooms and showers-- again with HOT running water. Yes, please!
El Cosmico was the perfect spot for a sister trip. We reserved a Teepee and it was super cool! The set up was very nice and luxuriously furnished. We ended up staying in a camper because it was suppose to storm and the teepees are a tad bit open at the top. They kindly allowed us to get into a trailer, thank you Angela! The trailers are very nice as well! The beds, I can't say enough good things about them, I wish I could take it home and we spent several thousand on our bed at home. The comforters were very cozy. A good weight, not too heavy, not too light. Perfect!! The campgrounds are very clean and nice. The souvenir shop is a little pricey but they quality is there. Met a cutie named Oscar, very friendly and welcoming. He needs his own merch. I've told friends and family about our trip and 10/10 recommend staying if you're visiting Marfa. A very unique experience.
First I just feel so bad for the people who left 1 star reviews and didn't have a good time. My advice to those considering staying here is to first, temper your expectations. Even though this is considered some form of "glamping" the word camping is still part of this. Don't expect comfortable and cushy surroundings. You're still sort of sleeping outside. It gets cold. Yes it's off a main road. There's nothing 5 star happening here, despite the pricing. Ok? Do we understand each other now? K good! First recommendation, splurge on a large or extra large trailer. Don't mess with the teepees or safari tents. You'll have a much better time. Our trailer was awesome. It was clean. The bed was comfortable. We had a flushing toilet. The trailer came with a radio and we found this 24hr non stop radio station that is only exclusive to Marfa and plays undoubtedly the best music for your surroundings. When we were at the trailer we hung out a lot on the deck, relaxing to the quiet nothingness of the desert. Now to those dissatisfied with the customer service. Please remember where you are. This is West Texas. No one gives a rats ass about your lavish lifestyle and expectations back in LA or wherever. Look, the staff wasn't annoyingly smiling at us every 5 minutes. But they were nice. They did their jobs. We have no complaints about the staff. Yes the gift shop is unnecessarily expensive. But if you feel that way about it, don't buy anything. Do like we did. We bought two lighters and two bumper stickers lol. Done. Yes the free coffee is amazing. Wished it was available sooner than 8am. Pro Tip: Don't overpack! There's nowhere to put your stuff. Bring what you need and that's all. The only reason why I gave this place 4 stars instead of 5 is because I just think the accommodations are a little pricey. But whatever we'd definitely come back.

Go there for the aesthetic, hype, and experience. Don't go there for the customer service. - The entire time we were there the bathrooms were out of soap - Zipper on tipi was faulty and would unzip at times (we notified them) - Rain caused damage to our personal items When we went there was a spike of rain -- which would be fine except none of the attendants warned that black soot would drip down and soak our items. Several things were ruined/stained our personal pillowcases, clothes, bags, & electric blanket (not cheap!). When we went to get fresh blankets and sheets it seemed this was a normal occurrence and we were given no sympathy. You get what you paid for, but maybe not with the pretentious El Cosmico. read more

I adore this place! Can not wait to go back and relax on the hammocks. If you want to be one with nature, this is the place. This is not your typical campground...There's tent camping- for the glampers, there's safari tents, teepees and also rv's. Outdoor showers, that are very hippie-ish... you'll definitely connect with nature once you shower - or decide to soak in the bathtub. There's a hot tub (I don't remember the actual name of the type of hot tub) that you can rent. An outdoor kitchen in the common area, along with hammocks... I can't not even explain how amazing this place is. Even the front desk people go above and beyond... I was running late for check in, they left me a personalized check in envelope- they took the time to make it artsy fartsy with my name and highlighted where I had to go... they definitely made it super easy! This was definitely one of the coolest campgrounds I've ever been too. The experience is out of this world! If you like the cool hipster feeling- put this on your bucket list. read more

My first visit to Marfa and El Cosmico was the Railroad Revival Tour (Mumford & Sons) in 2011. It was a cosmic, spiritual experience and I have returned several times. Most recently, my buddy and I rode our motorcycles to Marfa and spent a few days camping at El Cosmico, riding and hanging out. El Cosmico is my fav place in Texas and I truly mean that. A couple of years ago my wife and I stayed three nights in one of the safari tents. That was awesome. This time, my buddy and I pitched our tents under some trees. We had a hammock there and a picnic table. I love just chilling out in the main house, drinking coffee in the morning, reading in the reading room (great selection of books), visiting with people from all over the world, listening to the great selection of old records, taking a nap in the hammock under the tree...just relaxing. That's what El Cosmico is all about. I love the outdoor shower/bathroom and I love the cookhouse. I love the natural layout and all the plants and flowers. Well, you get how I feel. Go there. You will love it! read more

Do not book a self camping spot and bring an RV. You will be in a dusty parking lot on a noisy road and not in the actual camp ground itself. El Cosmico is cool but this option (which is booked through their partner Hipcamp) is damaging to their brand and isn't worth it. I suggest the owners stop offering this altogether as we were terribly disappointed and had to scramble to find an alternative. The front desk person even said "yeah if I were you I won't stay there in that lot like that." read more

Upsides: *The safari tent was really cosy, well designed and aesthetically pleasing. The bed was also big and comfy. *Outdoor showers - super refreshing (when it's sunny and warm anyway!) *Calmness. The entire campsite is so chilled out, it's the perfect place to relax and unwind. Downsides: *Our tent wasn't ready when we checked in at 3pm. The staff told us to sit down for 5 minutes, but then they never came back to get us. So we made our own way to the tent! *No hot water after dark. Had a freezing cold shower at 11pm *This isn't El Cosmico's fault - but there's a train that beeps it's horn for ages at 3am and wakes you up! read more

Great place to pitch a tent unless it's rainy and windy that is -otherwise opt to throw in just a little bit more money and grab a safari tent. El Cosmico is a great place to stay with friend(s) and my dog, mostly hang out , meet some new people, hear some music , doze in the hammocks ( in the shade!) and relax in general.. disappointed that there was not much to see in the art galleries in town (maybe because it's August and artists are for the month but still recommend a visit. read more
Come. Come here now. Not for the fancy shampoo that never exists in your trailer. Not for the free wi-fi that - once again - doesn't exist in your trailer. But for the experience! Stay is a disco funk, Texas-style trailer - in one of the most happenin' city's in Texas (yes, Marfa is a "city.") and thank your lucky stars you did. Trailer, safari tent, camping, TEEPEE - you name it - it's gonna be an experience. So here's my experience for staying in a trailer. And trust me. I know my trailers. I "done grew up" in a trailer when I was a youngin'... The trailer experience: *No A/C. Just fans and screen windows. But the weather can be close to perfect, so those hot nights turned to cool nights are peeerfect. Don't bitch. *There are flies galore. No skeeters like in Houston, Texas but be prepared fo' flies. *Like another yelper explained, the price of ~$150 per night is pretty hefty, considering you don't get cleaning service every day, no new towels, no shampoo, soap, coffee, wi-fi, new sheets ... the way you check-in is the way you leave. *Indoor plumbing (toiletes) but outdoor showers. That was kinda remarkable for me. The hot sun beating on our nekkid bodies; I felt like I was in Mexico again. Bathing outdoors is underrated. And though it was our own private shower, it was definitely a liberating and fun experience - minus the occasional breeze. Woooweeeh. *Community center where you can bbq, party all night and sleep all day - unless you have lame-ass neighbors at El Cosmico. (rare, but it happens) *Friendly staff. They're there to please. I CAN NOT WAIT to come back. My girlfriends and I had the most awesome times of our lives in our trashy little trailer, and would certainly take that freak show on the road. Editors Note: Beyonce recently visited here. Yeah. My group is waaaay ahead of the curve. http://iam.beyonce.com/ read more
Dang. Talk about an adventure and complete retreat from most worldly things! I've been wanting to come to Marfa since high school and finally got the chance - I am quite pleased it happened to work out in the month of January. I'm not good at camping in the heat but am damn good at layers so winter is just fine. Checkin was easy and quick. We were directed to our designated safari tent already built (I can camp but I can't build a tent out of anything else but chairs and blankets.) The bed easily fit both my over 6 foot husband and I and even had a heated blanket. I've been told over and over again cell service doesn't exist here but my AT&T phone worked just fine. However, I recommend tucking your phone away and detaching for a bit. A storm rolled in around 1AM that night and I thought the wizard of oz was taking us to the yellow brick road. Really. The storm shook our tent around a good hour and I am beyond impressed the tent remained standing. Bring a book, bring an open mind, live simply and make friends. Our tent neighbors were from Denmark and I met a group of girls my age from all over the US in the magical hammock land (you'll know what I mean when you see it.) Here's the thing: If you're able to camp or airstream it, DO IT. I don't think one can get the full experience outta the majestic-ness of Marfa if they don't stay at El Cosmico. PS- Nice dogs are welcome to stay here too! Mister Olof might need another year to work on his camping skills but he is so coming with me the next trip. read more

My gf and I stayed 2 nights here and it was a blast. Everything was open to the out doors and this was good for Houstonians like us. It's a sad day but I journey shall continue to Austin...but before I go I would like to share what I enjoyed about the trip or for those planning on coming here and want to be prepared for this type of season (Summer Hi: 90/ Lo: 55) Make sure to bring all of your bathroom needs except toilet paper they provide plenty of that lol Everything is outdoors of course (showers, bathrooms, community kitchen etc.) bring sunscreen and bug spray too. There are 3 bathrooms on the property. I will rank them in levels of privacy. 3 being the most private Bathroom/shower 1: located directly behind the check in office. This bathroom is more for family's no doors on stalls or showers. Does offer bathtubs too for relaxation. Bathroom/shower 2: located next to the bathroom 1 is more private provides doors on showers and stalls and a sink with lighting. Bathroom/shower 3: located on the opposite side of the property, so if you don't want anyone to catch any nude shots from you or bad bathroom times come right over lol. There is an open kitchen with hot plates and a small amount of kitchen utilize if you want to cook for yourself and socialize. Also, if you want to BBQ there are a few pits on the site. It's pretty hot during the day so bring shorts and shirt sleeve/tank top for sure but at the night it's nice and chilly and stars are so beautiful too. Oh if you want to capture the Stars your phones won't work so bring a nice camera with a great lens to capture the light from the stars. The town seems to be open primarily Tuesday l-Sunday and thing open around 10am it's weird but I will take a picture of things to do for you so you can plan around it. Also, if you are interested in the hot tubs...ONLY AVAILABLE WEDNESDAY-FRIDAY! Other then that. We had a Great stay and will return more prepared for more adventures! read more

Glamping. Unless you bring your own tent... then you're just straight up camping. El Cosmico (EC) is located right off the bustling main strip in Marfa. You'll see a small building with random teepees, tents and trailers on the land. There is plenty of parking and you're given a little wagon to drag your stuff to your spot. You'll meet lots of hipsters and young families, so don't be afraid to be friendly. Two of us ran into friends from high school... which is nuts when you think about how far away Marfa is from a big city or an airport. We stayed in a tent and loved it. It's the very hottest time of the year, in my opinion, and we made it through. The tents have a nice canvas floor that you can walk barefoot on, a light switch to turn on a lantern at night, outlets, a chair to put things on, towels and plenty of blankets. Surprise! It gets super cold at night. It felt amazing after such a hot day. My least favorite part was the communal bathroom situation. It was more of an outdoor bathroom with some covering over it. But no one in Marfa is really dressed up, so the air dried hair, no make-up look is really in there. I found that taking a shower in the afternoon was perfect - you don't really want to hang out in your hot tent during the day, so cool off instead. Tip #1: Definitely take a nap in one of their hammocks. So relaxing. Tip #2: For some extra privacy, you can snag one of the bathrooms indoors during office hours. Tip #3: Those who stayed in their own tents, spent the most time in the EC hang out area. They were able to charge their phones in there. read more

This was our second time staying with the beautiful people at El Cosmico. Ashlie & her staff were amazing with helping to plan our small wedding on the property. They were very attentive and so fantastic with communication and hospitality! I cannot express how impressed we all were! I'll forever recommend this magical place and we'll be returning for years to come! Thank you again to all who helped make our special day a real dream come true! read more

I visited Marfa on a cross country road trip with some friends. We got in late at night and settled into our Teepee at El Cosmico. It was stunning and so comfortable. From the outside it didn't look nearly as big as it was. We had a full size bed and twin bed, plus a twin size air mattress that we had brought with us. 4 girls and their stuff fit around the fire pit, couch and beautiful light fixtures. We woke up early and watched the sunrise over the desert while making breakfast in the outdoor kitchen before settling down to eat in the hammock grove. It was so wonderfully peaceful we didn't want to leave! Note: The restrooms for tents and teepees are outside. It is still very much glamping. The toilets are clean and there is a shower available in a vine covered shelter. read more

OMG omg this place is an Instagram haven. The absolute coolest place I've ever stayed. Most amazing idea for a hipster paradise. I would have absolutely given 5 stars if not for the bathrooms not being the freshest and the service not being the friendliest. I have recommended this place to everyone and their mother, though! We rented a teepee in May. The days were pretty warm, and the nights were cool. The teepee came equipped with an electric fireplace which was excellent to fall asleep with. The town was so fun, we rented bikes from el cosmico and rode around during the day and checked out local bars at night. Be aware that most things in marfa are closed Monday-Wednesday. Enjoy!! read more

Had a great stay here! The staff was very friendly at check in and the guest lodge area is nice and inviting. We stayed in one of their XL trailer- the battleship which is also handicap accessible. It was nice to be able to bring our three dogs with us. There's no WiFi at any of the sites (just the lodge) but it's nice to unplug anyway. Our trailer had a full bathroom inside (sink, shower, and toilet) which was a plus. The bathroom situation varies by site with some using a communal bath house. Beautiful at night. Marfa is a quaint town- would definitely visit again. read more

Is it full of hipsters? Yes. Is it in the middle of nowhere? Yes. Are the bathrooms kind of weird? Yes. Was it amazing and would I go back? Yes and yes. We stayed in one of the teepees and it was awesome with the exception of not being able to get our propane heater to light. It's spacious and really well decorated. The zipper on the teepee is not very high so getting in and out is kind of tricky of you're tall. It's very comfortable and everyone is nice. They offer free coffee in the mornings and there are lots of little spots on the grounds to just sit and hang (even hammocks!). There's a small outdoors kitchen if you're into that kind of thing too. There's a gift shop on site where EVERYTHING is horribly overpriced ($40 t-shirts) but it's cute. If I ever venture that way again I'd stay only here and not in the Thunderbird hotel where we also spent two nights. read more

We only got to stay here one night (a Friday night) as we were spending Saturday night in Ft. Davis, but I would definitely have enjoyed at least another night or two. We stayed in the safari tent as all their yurts were full for that night. A queen size futon on a hard floor, extra blankets, towels and electricity were all provided (I loved the Moroccan themed metal light fixture hanging over our futon). The bathroom is a community activity, haha. Toilets, and showers especially, are not completely enclosed. I had a little reservation showering in the morning knowing that if someone really wanted to, they could come stand at the door and look through the gaps and see me in all my glory, haha. But I didn't catch any creepers and overall found it somewhat refreshing. I'd do it again. I was disappointed that the Dutch tubs weren't in use (an open flame coupled with EXTREMELY dry conditions made it out of the question) but hope to come back once they've had some good rain and try one out. I also wished I had had the time to take advantage of the hammock grove. Overall, I had a really good experience but didn't get to take advantage of everything the El Cosmico had to offer. I will definitely be coming back in the future! read more

Loved our stay at El Cosmico! We were staying there for my son's wedding. We stayed in the Vagabond...it was great...a bit cold in the early morning but warms up quickly.. We had an indoor shower in our trailer but I loved the shower outside. Everyone in the front office was very helpful with whatever we needed. read more

Just returned from an epic West Texas road trip over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, which included a two-night stay at El Cosmico. Wow, what an experience! It's a really special place with a unique sense of community, and I can't recommend it enough. It also makes the perfect home base for visiting attractions like Balmorhea State Park, Fort Davis, Big Bend and, of course, the famous Marfa lights. However, you do need to know what you're getting into at the outset. No, this isn't a normal hotel situation. I would describe it as "half-camping." You get a soft bed and maid service (if you're staying in one of their structures and not your own tent, which is also an option), but yes, you do have to walk to the bathroom in the night. And the shower/toilet situation is...adventurous, let's say. (It's a little more open than many may be used to.) But, seriously, if you're staying at a campground called "El Cosmico" with retro trailers and teepees in the middle of the West Texas wasteland, should you really be complaining about stuff like that? It's probably just not for you, and that's fine. But for those of us who dig stuff like that, who like a little adventure and enjoy trying something different, I would encourage a stay at El Cosmico. I thought the decor and general landscape of the grounds were a perfect combination of rustic and hipster--it was exactly what I was expecting and hoping for. I felt like I was on the set of "Easy Rider" or something. My fiance and I stayed in a safari tent the first night and a teepee the second night. Both were great, but I really loved the teepee! So cool. Highly recommend. The staff was always helpful, and I felt like I had everything I needed (including electric plugs for my iPhone and hairdryer, wifi in the lobby and free coffee in the mornings!). We brought things with us like a wine bottle opener, plastic cups, a flashlight, a cooler, etc, because we go camping every so often and anticipated "roughing it" a bit. It was an overall great experience, and we're already planning a return trip to try out one of the trailers. read more

It pains me to write this as I am a huge fan of Liz lambert and this concept!!!! I have stayed in the past without issue and we were looking forward to hanging out on the porch with the stars. A huge storm came through and the whole place flooded. I'm from Texas and I know that you can't do much about a flash flood of this magnitude so we just made it part of the experience. The problem was that (not sure if due to the flood or not?) we were awoken at 3am by a horrendous stench of sewage. We were in trailer 18 and by this time of night, the ground was mostly dry. We tried to air out the trailer and when we left for the day the office said they would send maintenance and if they couldn't fix it they would get us a hotel in town because they were sold out. Cool, that is respectful! When we arrived back late afternoon we checked in with the office before heading to the trailer. She said they couldn't find anything wrong and it didn't smell. Ok, cool, we will go check it out. Back to the trailer and all was well, no smell... so we blamed the flood and settled in for another night... about midnight we noticed the smell was coming back and it again got stronger as the night went on. We got up early and bailed because we couldn't stand it. I explained the situation to a different girl at the front desk but she was much less accommodating than the other one the prior day. She just said, 'yea, that's too bad, we're sorry and will send maintenance out again'. The trailers are too expensive for this type of experience. :(. Girl one was a 5 star. Girl two was a 2 star. Sewage stench at full price was a 1 star. read more

We were booked for 3 nights in a medium trailer(#13-Branstrator) and a tee pee! Husband wanted all of us to stay in a tee pee but I had to draw the line at walking to the outdoor toilet in the middle of the night (snakes-ugh) so we settled on the medium trailer! The outdoor shower took some getting used to (it was not fully enclosed) but the water was super warm, which was great! The toilet in the trailer was wobbly and didn't feel like it was connected to the floor. On our 3rd day, the door to the trailer no longer latched/shut and had to be held shut with the table. I was worried about the dog getting out. Maintenance came pretty quickly but we noticed that the Cosmic Kasita was empty and decided to upgrade to that room for the last night! If we come back, I will book the Cosmic Kasita for the entire stay! It was amazing and roomy! The window seat was spectacular! The kids had fun in the tee pee! The grounds are large and peaceful. There is a communal kitchen and hammock garden. We picked up pizza to go one night and ate at the tables in front of the lobby. Overall we had a fun trip and are thinking about our next trip! They had a music event one night but we missed it as we had tickets for the McDonald Observatory and didn't get back until after 1 am. read more

El Cosmico is a great little spot to enjoy the full Marfa experience. I stayed in a yurt one night and a safari tent the next (I booked last minute and had to take what I could get). It was like camping, but you don't have to do any of the setup and you get to sleep in a really comfy bed. Along with the comfy bed are beautiful repurposed electric lanterns, heated mattress pads for chilly nights and mornings and gorgeous blankets from (I believe) Bolivia. Keep in mind that Marfa is HOT! The trailers have A/C, but you are out of luck if you aren't staying in one. There aren't many shady spots so the only way to find relief from the heat and sun was to leave in an air conditioned vehicle. The outdoor communal kitchen was perfect for storing food and preparing meals. I especially enjoyed sharing/trading food with fellow guests. The bathhouse is neat, but definitely not for the bashful. It is mostly private, but I couldn't shake the feeling that everyone was peeping through the wooden slats. I would love to come back and stay for a week one Fall and just enjoy doing nothing at all. read more
