This places literally hidden in plain sight. I've lived in the area for a decade and never been until now. I pass the strip mall every day on the way home, but to me it's just not a very inviting strip mall, as there's only one business in there that I used to regularly attend, but I haven't been there in a long time either. However, I'm slowly trying to hit things that I should've tried long ago, so I walked down the street and checked them out. Generally with Mexican food you can't go too wrong and you will leave full and content. This is a family, friendly and family owned restaurant and the staff is pleasant and professional, the menu has the staple items that you would expect to see, and everyone should be able to find something they will enjoy, even vegetarians. The food was decent, served hot and fresh, but other than being content with a full belly, it was nothing extraordinary to rave about; however, I would recommend it to someone in the area. read more

Solid place to eat breakfast after a long night. I will say that it does get really busy, especially on the weekends. Always go for the Menudo, or the taco special. They also have plenty of parking in their main lot as well as options for kids too. They always also have the kindest servers, and bump some great classic tunes. read more

I just came home from having dinner at a restaurant I loved for years, but I was disappointed about 2 years ago it was not as good as before. But I went today after two years and it is under new ownership and I couldn't be happier with the food it was delicious. I had camarones aguacjile 10 out of 10. And fajitas mixtas the owner was tbe cook and he was very welcoming I had a great dinner I would highly recommend it to anyone who loves authentic Mexican food. I came here solely for menudo, I read a review saying best menudo in the valley. Menudo is tripe for those of you that don't know it's a tasty and flavorful meal with different organs spiced up quite nicely. This wasn't what I had unfortunately. The revered Mexican dish tasted like the bottom of the barrel at best. It had 3 pieces of meet and a whole lot of caldo. I found myself adding everything in sight just to get flavor. Who ever said it was the best maybe had a low bar. The other dish I had was good, the rice and beans were traditional, tortillas were good, and I got to see them cut the tortillas up to make the chips for the chips and salsa they set at every table. Molcajetes where big and plentiful and honestly made up for the menudo. The atmosphere was okay but it was close to the holidays. The service was good except for the snarky manager when I said i didn't like the menudo because it was just caldo. I'd go again just to try the mole, but not anytime soon. I come here quite a lot for lunch for the same meal every time: enchiladas de queso with mole. Their mole is so freakin' good. It's delicious! It pairs perfectly with enchiladas. This place had some of the best Menudo and friendly faces at the register but ever since it changed ownership it has gone downhill. The menudo tastes watered down and not fresh at all. I would have to call and save myself a menudo bowl since it would be gone by 9am now it's available all day sometimes I wonder why. I still don't understand why they sold out. So far haven't been back in a couple of months and most likely won't be coming back unless they bring back the Menudo guy. I love coming here because it is walking distance from my house. I'm going to talk about the food first then I'll get to why I'm giving them 3 stars. My favorite dishes: 1. Birria de chivo o res (goat or beef): depending on the time of day they will either have both options, but they always seem to run out of chivo first; as it's the most popular meat used in birria. I gotta say, being from the gorgeous state of Jalisco in Mexico, this dish is something we Jalisciences are VERY proud of. This place does our dish immense justice. I normally get this dish for breakfast or lunch. I really prefer chivo, mostly because goat meat is more tender, lots of bones within the meat but most people and myself don't mind it. Pair it with rice and beans and top it with onions, cilantro, lime, and some dried oregano and you're good to go! 2. Chilaquiles: red or green, they're delicious. They'll serve you a hefty portion so make sure you order this on an empty stomach... not even joking. 3. Camarones a la diabla: SPICY shrimp with white rice and salad. The sauce is sooooooo flavorful, I freaken love this dish. They could be a little more generous with the amount of shrimp that they give but it's still great. Did I mention it's spicy? 4. Camarones in agua chile: this dish consists of semi cooked shrimp (some shrimp may be raw) that is cooked in lime juice with Serrano chiles (so it's spicy). This dish will also have cucumbers, red onions, and avocados. Eat it alone or with tostadas, it's fantastic both ways! Great dish for hot summer days... or whenever your heart desires it. Some things to mention: 1. The tortillas are made fresh, to order. They are from yellow corn... MY PERSONAL FAVORITE. So they get an A+++++ 2. The salsa is great! 3. Agua de jamaica is refreshing (my fav) 4. They have fantastic café de olla. Highly recommend it! 5. Prices are very fair. Now to the reason they get three stars. The service could really be better, they are a couple of waitresses that are phenomenal and super attentive but there are also a few that seriously suck. To the point that you'll be waiting for refill for eveeeeer. Another thing I have to mention is that the music they play is annoyingly loud. Some days it's not like that, but when it's loud as fuck, you can't even have a conversation with whoever you're there with. That's it, this is why they got three stars. The servers take their time taking and delivering your order. As far as drink refills...you have to constantly ask and call them over to your table. Decor and restaurant atmosphere is okay. The food was horrendous and the service was less than what I would receive on a cotton plantation in the 1800s. The food looked old, the rice smelled funky, the beans were without flavor and the best part of my tacos was the tortillas. All of my friends were highly disappointed with their meals. The chicken flautas tasted like pork (that should've been an indicator of things to come) and so did my friend's mojarra. After tonight I don't see myself coming back and that's sad because I really liked this place before. Never again, it will take a lot for me to give El Compadre another chance.
