Try the vegetarian tacos. Surprisingly, they stand out more than the meat ones. The margaritas are also damn good. Everything about the place is casual. The small downstairs bar has a divey, neighborhoody feel, and the upstairs, partially open during the summer, is a great spot to eat during the summer. read more

El Chucho has a great happy hour. They aren't the cheapest Mexican restaurant but their food is great so do yourself a favor and go during the happy hour, which is daily from 4pm - 6:30pm. During happy hour, all tacos are half-price ($2.50 - $4) and there are cheap drink specials. They have a great little rooftop deck which is perfect for those spring and summer after work moments. My friend and I started with Strawberry Habanero and a Swirl margarita. Both were tasty, I favored the strawberry habanero one, but could have been stronger. Also, I would recommend the chili lime salt because it is addictively tasty. After trying various margaritas offered at El Chucho, I preferred the House margarita they had on tap. First off because it was the cheapest margarita and second, it was the strongest margarita I had while there. We started our margarita fueled munchie experience with the guacamole and chips. The guacamole was good but not the best I've had in DC and was accompanied by salsa. FYI - they don't give you that many chips but you can ask for more. After the chips and guacamole and we tried the Elote Callejero. I had read many Yelp reviews that said this was a must-try and I have to agree with them. Do yourself (but not your waistline) a favor and order the elote callejero. Essentially, it is El Chucho's take on "street style" corn on the cob. If you still aren't sure, think corn on the cob covered in cheese, chili and cilantro. Actually don't think and just get it! After several margaritas each, we ended our meals with tacos. We tried Al Pastor and the Pollo. Both were good and worth trying. I'll be back to El Chucho for more margarita filled happy hours. read more

I was sort of underwhelmed. The corn is very tasty, no question. The staff is knowledgable about gluten free options on the menu but they are surprisingly limited for a cuisine that relies more on corn than wheat in general (and this famous corn is apparently not included). They have A LOT of tequila and mezcal, but you know what? You don't really need every single one. You just need good ones in different styles and price points. The bar would be well served by some editing. We tried a mezcal flight, which was worth it to sample the pricier stuff at a lower price. read more

We were very rushed and the service was sub par. I think we waited for our table longer than we sat at it. The salsa was whisked off the table before I could request more chips to go with it. If you're going to charge me $2.50 for chips and salsa at least give me enough chips to eat the salsa with! The margarita was great. No watered down sweet and sour to be seen. But, this was the only high point. I ordered the asado tacos. I took this to mean something between BBQ (asado) and the carne asada I'm used to seeing in Mexican restaurants and was very disappointed when two little sad tacos with ground beef and a dabble of some green stuff appeared in front of me (there were radishes too, but it was stuck on the ground beef). I generally had a very hard time understanding the menu despite the fact that I consider myself acquainted with mexican food, both from mexico and american takes on it, have been to mexico several times, and am fluent in spanish. I have no idea what baja street food is so maybe that is my folly. Anyway, my taco plate was stolen from out from under me as I put my last bite in my mouth. I was going to eat my crumbs! I was also going to order more food and assume that I just hadn't spent enough time studying the menu. The server arrived again only briefly to deliver the check and walk away. So, I'll have to leave it for another time. I'd go back but more as a place to get a drink with a snack, not for dinner. read more

Okay so the food is great like really good. But the staff is questionable. I've been here 3 times and each time I am treated different as a black women on a date with a black man or in a group with black people. For example I was on a double date with another black couple and our server kept suggesting food that is better than " crack cocaine" or " deliciously deep fried food" which could have been subconscious, but it still didn't feel good. Me and two of my black friends went for drinks and my friend had her purse on the bar top and someone who worked their left their phone on the counter next to her purse and walk out to do whatever. But came back in a rush to slide his phone away further away from her and left, as if she had planed on taking it. I'm here right now and the server upstairs has seemed to make an effort to get the orders of every table that has white people at it (even if they sat down before me and my black boyfriend) before taking our orders even though I've made the 'I'm ready to order eye contact with home 3X' Great food but I don't think the micro aggressions is worth it at all. I leave full but feeling less than. I'm a paying/tipping costumer who is just looking for a nice experience. So unless you are white or have a white partner or friend I would say this is NOT THE PLACE TO GO. read more

When I first moved to Columbia Heights back in 2002, I befriended an El Salvadoran family that lives in the house across the alley from me. We used to get together and grill several times a year, big carne-asada grill-ups with handmade tortillas, Coronas, queso duro, raw jalapenos, and occasionally, "Elote Loco," (crazy corn). Now, I've been going to El Chucho for a while. I like the small tacos, the fresh ingredients, the friendly service, lively atmosphere, and the margaritas with chili-salt on the rim. But it wasn't until Cinco de mayo that I first tried their Elote Callejero (basically "street corn")...let me tell you...this stuff is a delicacy in its own right. The corn is perfectly charred and coated with a variety of condiments. It's very well done and a slight twist on the home-spun elote loco we used to eat back in the day. Don't take my word for it. Try it. When the sun is out the patio and front window are great places to sit and soak up some rays, and get soaked. The new roof top deck adds a little breathing room to the dining experience and since it's covered, is even nice during rainy weather. My date and I felt like we were anywhere but DC when we were sitting up there. Lovely, one of my favorite new spots. Oh, and happy hour, Mondays everything is 1/2 price...hard to beat! read more

Not your father's tex-mex The food: El Chucho is a real delight for Latino food lovers. The menu is replete with items beloved to those of us who have lived or worked in Latin America, but never found on American restaurant menus. We had the grilled corn appetizers, veggie chimichangas (not like you've ever had before), flautas, and a couple of other selections. While it suffers from the current DC small-plates craze, in this case it works, so you can get a little sample of all the wonderful dishes on the menu. As for drinks, the tequila list is long, but so is the list of mescal, unusual for DC. I tried a smoky mescal recommended by the "tequila king" and it was so good I had another. Two of my dining companions had the margaritas, served on the rocks and with a choice of chili salt on the rim. The draft beer list is small but well-chosen. The atmosphere is divey but clean and fun. We sat up to the bar that straddles two sides of a garage-type door that is open in warm months. The inside is small, but there is an enclosed rooftop seating area as well. It was our first time there, but I hope our server, Maria, is exemplary of the service at El Chucho. She was all smiles, made us feel welcome, and was attentive without being smothering. While you might say El Chucho draws a hipster-ish crowd, there was zero attitude from any of the staff we encountered. In short, I (we) couldn't recommend El Chucho more. read more

Pretty good! I like the vibe upstairs on the porch. It's pretty cramped downstairs with the bar, but if you can get a table upstairs, I'd recommend it. I ordered a can of beer, and then the corn on the cob. WOW! The corn is outstanding. Next time I will likely just order that. For dinner, I ordered what was essentially a Mexican flatbread, with green peppers, mushrooms, and some various sauces. Everything was fresh, and the floury bread was excellent, but it didn't all come together as I had hoped. For the drinks and the corn, this place is 4 stars. However, my dinner was a 3. read more

The Washingtonian praised El Chucho as being one of the best new Mexican restaurants, so of course i had to go and see if all of the buzz was deserved. After perusing the menu it is very reminiscent of Chicago's Big Star, or Toronto's Grand Electric. We came out midweek, and the weather was raining on and off throughout the day, however it cleared up just around supper time, allowing us the opportunity to dine on your fabulous roof top deck. We started the meal with lime margaritas, of course. They were perfectly blended, and on my next visit, i am going to man up and order the swirl with strawberry habanero. While our food was being prepared, we took the servers suggestion and ordered the chips and salsa. There is no better combination than of salty chips with a lime margarita. Disappointment number one of the night, the chips never came. Our meal had come and we told the server to forget about the chips, because the whole point of a starter is to enjoy with a drink, and to consume them before you main comes. For great customer service, they should have been comped, they were only $2.50. My sis started with the street style corn, and it looked delicious. It was buttery and cheesy, and a great way to start the meal. We ordered the asada tacos with miso marinated steak, charred onions, radishes and salsa cruda. These were the first and the best. The steak was super flavourful and tender. The charred onion were a different topping for me, and they made the dish, they were smoky, and they added texture. Next were the calabacita tacos which had squash blossoms, fried zucchini, and black garlic. These were forgettable for me, they were decent but nothing stood out about them. Finally we had the al pastor with adobo marinated pork and classic toppings. Again, these were pretty pedestrian, they tasted just like any one that i have had in the past. Overall, there were moments of greatness in the night with the corn, and the asada tacos, and the great margaritas. However for as many highlights, there were equal low lights, and to top off, the service was insincere, and ineffective. read more

A few of us made it over to El Chucho for a post-work happy hour (which is all day on Mondays!). Their specials are pretty good - $2.50 corn, $3 tacos, $4-5 margaritas, and discounted chips/salsa/guac. A lot of other reviewers seemed to like the corn and I agree that it is amazing. I also got to try all 3 tacos that were on special (vegetarian, chicken and pork - they have a steak one too, but it isn't discounted), and thought that the pork tacos stood out for their great seasoning. The chicken tacos were good and filling but on the bland side, and I don't really care for bell peppers, which the vegetarian tacos were filled with. The margaritas were decent. You can order them with chili salt which is awesome. I tried the draft and strawberry habanero ones, and slightly prefered the draft. Overall, great for happy hour. I don't think I would very happy paying $6 for those tacos, but at $3 they're a deal. And the corn and margaritas are delicious. Would not mind going again! read more

This place is very good. And the servers are knowledgable and friendly without being overbearing. I've been here a handful of times and have always had a fun time and good meal. A previous commenter said that this place is not authentic and that the elote doesn't deserve its name--I feel mixed about this because I think what makes this place great is that it sticks to some traditional Mexican dishes (ranging from many different regions in Mexico) but also is able to add some creativity and thoughtfulness to the menu (e.g. tarragon crema in gazpacho, inventive margaritas, radishes for some extra crunch in the tacos). I think the idea is well executed and the food is delicious. While the street corn may be a more nuanced version of what you may find on the streets of Mexico, it's still incredible delicious--on occasions I have thought about going back for seconds. The tacos are good, but they're better at El Chilango. Order the flautas or a torta instead. You can't go wrong with the house margs or a $4 Tecate tallboy if you're not feeling the tequila. The atmosphere is fun and vibrant--the space is a little small but it doesn't usually feel cramped, just may not be the BEST spot for a huge group of people. Upstairs is a good bet as well. Nice, covered patio. read more

I'll admit it. I've denigrated El Chucho since it opened. Mostly because it was too crowded for us to ever get served. A few weeks ago, I flew into town early on a Monday. A friend met up with me and we waddled over to El Chucho for happy hour. It was early but the staff was super friendly. **Magic Mondays** Their happy hours are all night long. That's right. Cheap margaritas, elote loco, 1/2 price tacos, need I go on?? We ended up having to leave (I was also househunting) twice to look at houses. We tried pretty much everything on the menu and loved all of it. The corn (elote loco) is as good as everyone raves. Yes I can make it at home, but for some reason, I feel like the hh prices justify me just coming here. The staff was UH.MAZE.ING. If you go during happy hour or on a Monday the prices are more than good, they're....GRRREAT! read more

Came here for brunch with my boyfriend and thought this place was cute and divey. We got bottomless mimosas (regular and hibiscus, which were really good but tasted like they had less champagne) and split the skirt steak and eggs and the chicken breakfast burrito.Loved whatever sauce was on the burrito and the potatoes that came with the steak and eggs. It took some time to come out but it was worth the wait, and the chips and salsa kept us occupied. As mentioned, I feel like service was a bit slow and the staff was not in a hurry to refill our mimosas/get us the check/etc. Overall solid experience. read more

El Chucho - Steak and eggs and chicken breakfast burrito! - Mexican Near Me - Washington, DC, District of Columbia

Updating my review. I go here a LOT of Mondays for the happy-hour-all-night prices. They redid the roof deck; it is way better designed and now has this sort of garage door-with-a-tarp thing going on. Was awesome in the summer, sort of too chilly now. Downstairs is a little cramped for my taste, so maybe the winter isn't the best time to try them, but still. The veggie tacos have vastly improved, I love them now. Recommended. On a Monday, four drinks, two elote, and four orders of two-tacos-each comes to like $35. They have some interesting things on their non-HH menu too. Last time I was here, had vegetarian squashblossom soup. read more

I went here specifically because they stay open late which I love! The vibe was nice and the margaritas were tasty and a great price! Everything we ordered was awesome. 2 tacos for $5 is a steal when they are some of the best that I've ever come across. 3.75 Stars This is like a hipster, less fancy/expensive (1/3 the price) version of Mike Isabella's Bandelero in Gtown. I've been twice with friends from out of town who absolutely loved it. I personally think it's a great spot in the CH hood where you can grab a cheap yet delicious margarita on the rocks ($5) with the option of chile salt (if you want a kick) and some Mexican snacks. The deck is really cute as well, and will be nice when the weather gets nice again. I've had various things from the menu, but by far my favorite is the fried cheese appetizer (name?), it's like the Mexican version of a mozzerella stick and to die for. I've also tried the guacamole (yummy), various types of tacos (the first visit the asada ones were delicious- the second visit the meat was chewy and not tender.). As long as El Chucho keeps its food quality as high as it was when it first opened, it should be a great success! read more

Love this place. Because of how small it is it can get pretty busy, loud, and you may have to wait. Service is helpful, prompt, and friendly. Atmosphere is also great. Happy Hour specials are on point! Here's the food break down: guacamole dip - $5 during HH, $8 regularly, perfect to split with one person, they should give more chips, but they refilled upon request (I don't remember if they charged extra). Very fresh, perfect texture, tastes home made (in a good way). fried cheese - I don't remember what it was called, all I know it is fried freaking cheese, 4 pieces, delicious, get it. chicken tacos - $5 for two (small) tacos, can't beat half off for HH until 6:30, marinated in tomato sauce. pork tacos - my favorite, also $5 and hald off for HH. Drinks - I have always gotten the $5 margarita on tap with spicy (bacon?) salt of some kinds, amazing. Will continue frequenting, can't wait for the roof top to open back up! read more

Another SAD excuse for Mexican food. (I lived in Puebla, Mexico for 2 years and have spent the past 2 summers in Guanajuato, Mexico for grad school, so I been able to have lots of delicious and REAL Mexican food.) My husband and I came here on a Saturday morning for brunch. I ordered the torta ahogada and my husband ordered what was supposed to be chilaquiles with carne asada. My husband's dish was a plate of scrambled eggs with ONE tostada, a pathetic amount of sauce, some canned beans, and OK meat. I was certain that it was a mix up because chilaquiles are supposed to be torn up fried tortillas covered in green or red sauce and then topped with cheese, crema, onions & maybe meat. The waitress assured me that he had received the correct dish and that that was how they "did" chilaquiles. A tostada on a plate with other things is NOT chilaquiles. They need to call it something else. The bread for the torta ahogada was grilled with a ton of butter or margarine, which ended up being the main thing that I could taste in the sandwich (YUCK). I've seen others complain about how the sandwich was drenched in the sauce, and well, folks, that's what a TORTA AHOGADA is. Ahogada means drowned (in sauce). The sauce was really bland and reminded me of a sloppy joe. I'll be sticking to Oyamel or Casa Oaxaca for Mexican food in DC. read more

This review relates specifically to a New Years Eve experience at El Chucho: Great! I live in New York, and New Years is an awful time in New York. Tons of out of owners, crowds, mayhem, insanity. Forget about your favorite lounge/club or bar, even: they'll charge you hundreds-thousands (depending on how deep that account runs) of dollars for the privilege of standing in line to later stand for six-twelve hours in a crowded and inevitably inadequately clean space, unless you know people and play the game. And if you do, you REALLY want to get out of town, because conflicting invitations and envy and better to disappoint everyone evenly than some severely. Enter DC. Close friends all, we wanted a comfortable, not insane or overly crunk environment (read: clean bathrooms, ample seating) which wasn't sepulchral: lively, with unlimited bar of some sort and food. El Chucho did this for ~$50, unlimited tacos and wells drinks, 9-2AM. We sat on the heated roof, had incredible service (as in remarkably attentive, cheerful, relaxed, patient), matched drinks with unlimited tacos (right? no hangover the next day!), did champagne at midnight--it was easy! We went on and had crunk times at Mambo Room and Madam's Organ--phantasmagoric--but El Chucho put us on the right path for 2015. Thanks all! Happy New Years! read more

Fantastic in every way!! Each cocktail we had was beautifully crafted and every bit of food was delicious morsel by morsel. Our party was made up of foodies, who had nothing but rave reviews for each dish and drink that arrived. All small plates, don't be afraid to order a little of everything. I think we actually did that and were thrilled each time something new came to the table. We started with the home made Guac, salsa and fried cheese. Do yourself a favor and get all three. The prices are so reasonable, you be glad you did as all three are amazing. The salsa is unique, spicy and delicious and the fried cheese could be a game changer in the city. This is such a simple idea, but so many places do it wrong. The lightly spicy, peanut style sauce that comes with it is also unique. Nobody does it better and you will want one for yourself so don't order to share, get your own. The tacos were excellent as was the pork sandwich my husband had. His sandwich was drenched in an amazing sauce that we spent the evening trying to identify, but came to the conclusion that it didn't matter because we would be back to have it again. The chicken flautas were PHENOMENAL. Get those, really. Do it. The soup was fantastic and the native Mexican who was with us said they nailed it in every way, even the hominy in it added the perfect amount of authentic taste. It was passed around to everyone at the table and she had a hard time getting it back. The care and time taken to invent and prepare this food is something to behold. Its clear the owners and chef put their hearts into this and love what they do. Down to the perfectly roasted shallots, the perfect pairing of sauces and spice, to the lovely staff they have on hand, this is going to be a raging success. I can't say enough about this place. We had a wonderful time and enjoyed every single thing we ordered. Get there early and be prepared to wait a little (but you can wait with a cocktail, so its really not that big of a deal), trust me, its worth it. read more

Coming from Mexico and finding " elote con queso y chile " is like just impossible unless you make it at home. This place nailed it perfectly. Tacos were a 8 of 10 also incredibly good and fresh. Due to some enthusiastic friends, I was expecting to be wowed by el Chucho, but I'm putting it down as a drinks/snack place, but not a true dinner place. The asada tacos were a real disappointment, mostly because they were dry and tough. And the chicken with mole was just very washed out. I do like the cheerful look of the place and the patio upstairs, and margaritas are great - try the spicy one, and the elotes. Yes, get yourself one, maybe two. read more

I spent a couple hours enjoying the rooftop on Saturday, 10/8. Pollo tacos were mediocre - if they'd thrown the corn tortillas on the plancha for a minute or two it would make a big difference. I wasn't in the mood for any of the cocktails on their menu so I only had one drink - spiked their housemade grapefruit soda with Tito's, which was good. Biggest problem I encountered was a duplicate charge on my credit card. My bill was $18.20, inclusive of tax and tip. Both that transaction and a second transaction for $25.30 posted to my account. I went back to the restaurant in person to dispute the charge but the GM, Michael Audi, wasn't there; exchanged a few emails with him to try and sort things out. In his last email, he simply said, "I will try to find it." The irony in this situation is that I myself am a restaurant manager in DC; I have sorted through hundreds of credit card receipts over the years and poured over dozens and dozen of credit card batches. Yes, it is a real pain in the ass - unfortunately, however, "trying" won't cut it. I WILL NOT pay someone else's bill. I have since been in touch with my credit card company - hopefully Michael doesn't give them the run around too. All in all, the highlight of my evening was the adorable family of little brown mice who were scurrying all over the roof top deck. read more

It's really a shame- I live about 100 feet away, and maybe my expectations were just too high. I've been three times now. The 1st was for drinks, and we were very happy with the prices and quality of the margaritas. We haven't been back for drinks, however, because sitting 4 deep at the bar really killed the conversation, and there are no tables for people who are just drinking. The second time, I went for dinner on a sunday night, the tacos and guac were half off, most of what we ordered was pretty good, one was pretty bad, and the price was fine. I was overall satisfied. The third time was more of a disaster. I went with my parents, eager to show that my neighborhood is cool! that I live near fun restaurants! And after waiting for about an hour, we were seated. Drinks were good, service was good, but the food was just terrible for some reason. My mom and I ordered a leafy green sandwich whose name I forget, and and neither of us could finish it. My mom said something like "it's not that often that I go to a restaurant and really don't like what I get." . The food needs to be a lot better, and if there could be some tables set aside for people who are just drinking, we'd consider going back. As is, there's just too much competition on the 11th st. corridor to make going here worth it. read more

If you can cut through all of the hipster bullshit, this place is pretty outstanding. The grilled corn is worth the trip alone. Margaritas were tasty and well done. Tortas are enormous and delicious. They do not have tonic water. Don't ask me why, because I'm sure its some asinine millennial nonsense, but thats really my only complaint...and its an old man grumbling kind of complaint. Our waitress didn't seem too bright, but she was otherwise prompt. Not terribly helpful with the menu, but its self explanatory, would have liked some clarification but got the vibe that she just didnt give a shit about us (in a non-ironic way). I suppose we would have gotten more thorough service if I had ironic jorts and boots on, but again...the food makes it all worth it. read more

This place is bigger than it seems - try to snag a table upstairs/outside, if possible. The staff were more than welcoming to our large party (including le bebe) which was a relief. The brunch cocktails came with the options for booze - instead of a Bloody Mary, try the Bloody Maria (with tequila). I passed on the elote callejero because I wanted to try 3 tacos but it had rave reviews. I ordered the pork (al pastor), the chicken (pollo) and the squash blossom tacos (calabacita). The pork was my fav - flavorful and satisfying - while the chicken was my least - odd combo of toppings that didn't go together, IMHO. The calabacita could have used more flavor - could only pinpoint the zucchini honestly - but was better when I put their hot sauce on it. I really liked this place though - staff were super friendly, and the place made for a perfect Sunday brunch. read more

El Chucho is an experience. It's a very Columbia Heights-esque restaurant (hipster!) and is one of the few areas/restaurants that has a neighborhood feel. As opposed to a crowd of wealthy Chevy Chasians slummin' it in DC for a meal before zipping away in their Mercedes SUV, or some semi-committed DC yuppies who spend most weekends out of town, El Chucho felt like that spot around the corner where true DC residents enjoy some cheap Mexican. This place has personality--the menu, the art, the employees, and DUH food are a start to finish experience. Even on a Tuesday night at 8 o'clock, we had to wait about 10 minutes to be seated in the tiny downstairs dining area. Our hostess and waiter were great--not pretentious, willing to take time to explain the menu and recommend items, and attentive without being overbearing. We started off with some margaritas--a spicy blackberry poblano margarita and the "todos naturales," both rimmed with chili salt. They were both awesome, especially the blackberry poblano; interesting twist on a margarita. Also, neither had that nasty super sweet aftertaste. Next, we had some chips and guac. The guac was honestly the best I've had .... ever? It was perfect. For dinner, we had flautas and swapped two orders of carne asada and al pastor tacos. The servings are small enough to share or double up, which is awesome because I love getting a little taste of every thing. Very conducive to sharing or ordering many items. The prices are very, very fair. For $45 (pre tip) we enjoyed a full meal. The atmosphere was casual and fun, and had it been warmer, the roof deck would be perfect for dinner & drinks. I wouldn't say you need to go out of your way to try El Chucho TOMORROW, but I would say that if you are in CoHi (see, I'm a hipster sometimes!) or love Mexican food, make the trip! read more

THAT CORN THOUGH. Happy hour deals are pretty sweet. $5 house margs (with your choice of chill salt), other flavored mags vary in price, and super cheap appetizers. If you didn't catch it by my intro, you should most definitely try the corn on the cob. It's topped with amazingness like cheese and sauces and spices. You might think corn is a weird thing to have for happy hour, (so did I) but it's amazing. The margaritas are decently sized and delicious as well. We also got the chips and guac which were meh, though the salsa was great and spicy. This place is rather small and divey, so try and come early especially if you're with a larger party.
