This place is delicious and always fresh and the best Mexican food I have found since moving to Oregon in 2013 from San Jose where there is good Mexican food on every corner!! I have tried almost everything on their menu and haven't found anything that I didn't like. Its very affordable as well and they run daily specials. The portion sizes are huge so majority of the plates can be shared with a child or another not so hungry adult be prepared for left overs! While driving through Canby, I was looking for a bite when I can across this tiny restaurant - two tables, a small counter, and some outside seats are all the accommodations it could afford - but even after getting out of my car, I knew i was in for a treat. El Chilito is perhaps the single best example of authentic Mexican cooking in Oregon - everything from the asada tacos to the rich and flavorful menudo is cooked with great attention to even the smallest of sensory details, with plenty of fixings to add whatever zest you wish to your meal! I am from San Diego and am SO happy I have found some authentic Mexican food. This was my second time here, and it proved the first visit was not a fluke. Ordered the Carne Asada plate. Healthy portion with beans, corn tortillas, lettuce, tomato, rice and a scoop of guacamole. Definitely enough for 2 people. Food is flavorful and beef was seasoned perfect. The best Mexican food in Canby by a long shot. There are a couple other restaurants here that serve decent "American Style" Mexican (lots of melted cheese) but nothing is as authentic and delicious as El Chilito. It's in what used to be an old, tiny burger joint and seating is limited to a few stools at the counter and two tables....there are some picnic tables outside if the weather is decent. I don't know what kind of "authentic Mexican food" some other people have had but this is trash can slop. We had fries with no seasoning, a fish burrito that was literally made with 5-cut up frozen fish sticks with some beans and rice tossed in. That's it. Flavorless junk just to move people through the door. The worse part is they could have easily made this better, most other area places at least use fish filets cooked and chopped, but this one included fish sticks (literally) that when broken up didn't have any flakes indicating real fish but rather was some sort of mechanically formed fish-paste that was full of air pockets. I'm not going to waste too much time writing this since I am not coming back, but try any of the nearby Mexican markets that serve food, real food, that you can see in the cases before it's cooked and served to you with love. The staff is amazing except for one lady who looks like she's mocking everyone that walks in, but overall I'm so glad they managed to stay up and running despite being closed at the beginning of the pandemic. The only downside I've food to this place so far is the wait. If you don't want fresh food and can't wait 10-20 mins depending on your order call in advance for pick up. This is my favorite take-out mexican place! I always get the chile relleno with a lengua taco. So hard to find good chile rellenos and I crave this after a while. My husband loves chimichangas. We even introduced the kiddos to it, I was nervous it was too authentic (they like Taco Bell) but they really liked it too! Hint: call ahead for your take out order. Sometimes they are so busy they won't answer the phone. Also expect to wait at home about 20mins before heading down to avoid a long wait. I once saw an angry woman who thought her food took way too long and I just shook my head because obviously she had not been here before! read more

You have to try the fish tacos! This is a tiny place but worth the crowd. The food is fresh, huge and delicious. You can eat outside on nice days or get a table inside but the lobby is very small. I love that this place is so inexpensive for a family. I'm bummed that they microwave foods in plastic wrap. Plastic wrap should never come into contact with hot foods, especially with fatty foods like meat. The toxins in the plastic will leach into the foods. If you are going to microwave with plastic wrap, you're supposed to leave 1" or more between the food and the plastic wrap. I don't think El Chilito's methods are up to FDA standards, and therefore may be putting their customers' health at risk. :( read more

So this place doesn't serve Chips and Salsa, so it escapes my List and wrath. The Food here is superb. I'm not so sure about authentic, but all the local Mexicans seem to eat there. Phoning in your order usually helps, but I've done that before and shown up only find out the order hadn't been started. Over all though, you get a lot of food for your money. El Chilito is all about tasty Mexican food. They do all the classic taco shop tacos and burritos like al pastor and carne asada.. and they do them well. But don't be afraid to go the deep end of their menu because they offer tasty options all around. I would suggest their chile relleno which is cooked to perfection and topped with a delicious sauce or their camarones a la diabla. This is the friendliest business, run by the sweetest people. The food is fantastic - just simple, very well done mexican dishes done right every time. There really is no place to feasibly sit inside, but tables outside if it's a nice day. Most people carry it out. We go here at least once a week because the food is so good and we have NEVER ONCE had a wrong order or a bad experience. Not once, in YEARS! They are consistently good every time. While I wouldn't frequent this place everyday, El Chilito covers all the basic Mexican food bases pretty well. It has an awesome burrito, and the sides that come with it are the standard rice and beans, but boy does that fill you up. Portion sizes are on the larger side. They also have awesome salsas and hot sauces there that seem to be homemade(?). Seating is limited, and lunch gets pretty crowded. I usually get my stuff to take out, which they wrap nicely and include plastic utensils. I just wish they had better hours. They're only open until 9pm, and aren't open on Mondays. read more

I moved behind this little place about a year ago in the appartments where the employees park their cars. When I first went there the woman was so friendly, I told her I lived right behind them and she said "well welcome neighbor!" The whole staff is so friendly, they always great you with a smile and a nice hello, and are very helpful. But of course there is the food. So so very good. And reasonably priced. My experience at el chilito was okay. It is a total hole in the wall but that's where you find the best Mexican. I lived two years in Mexico, so I know a thing or two about Mexican food. It's definitely authentic, but it's just not very flavorful. It was still good, but I won't go out of my way to eat there again. I had te tacos al pastor, and they were pretty good.
