We had sopes, chicken flautas and chicken quesadillas, guacamole and chips and salsa. All was delicious! We only had a few hours off our cruise ship. I had seen a video showing the rotisserie chicken here and wanted to give it a try! It appeared we were the only Americans in the restaurant which is always a great sign to us! Our server was responsive and her English was great so communication was not a problem. Service was fast. Our food was fantastic. My husband said it was the best refried beans he'd ever had. Beers were nice and cold. Our friends had margaritas and said they were great. I may have had the best mole sauce I've ever had here. We were traveling with a chef from San Diego who used to live in TJ and knew Ensenada pretty well - he guided us here for a long time local spot. I tasted several other dinners around our table and everything was really good. It is a block or so down from a bunch of nightclubs and trendy (read: expensive and loud) spots. We had an excellent experience at El Charro today. I actually contacted them by telephone (with use of a translator friend) and via FB Messenger from their Facebook page to schedule a large party of 42. They were accommodating, professional, and helpful. Our reservation was for 1pm and they scheduled us in the second floor so we could have a private area. The tables were set and ready when we arrived. Unfortunately half of our party was unable to arrive until two and the staff was understanding and worked with us with this situation. With that many people a lot of the menu was ordered and I haven't heard any complaints. I ordered the Mexican Combo with a taco, an enchilada, and a tamale. I loved it. My husband ate tacos, parents shared tales and my aunt and uncle shared child rellanos. Everything looked great and I believe everyone enjoyed their good. We had one snafu with a group of four not receiving their food. Because it was late they opted to just cancel it, but even with that, the woman in that group still wanted to "take care of" her server because everyone working our party was kicking butt! They were a little stressed about doing separate checks but they adjusted and made it happen. For six of us with alcoholic beverages our tab was $63!!! I've posted a bunch of photos so you can get a feel for the place. It's such a nice respite from the hustle of downtown Ensenada's tourist district but it's literally a half block from Papas $ Beer, so great location I highly recommend El Charro for a place to dine in Ensenada, especially if you've got a large party to accommodate! The menu is traditional Mexican dishes with a focus on their wood fired rotisserie chicken. They also have a few shrimp and fish dishes. We have been looking for a nice quiet restaurant near downtown. We happened to go on a Saturday when 2 cruise ships were in so the street was very busy but when we ducked into El Charro, all was quiet. The restaurant is large with seating near the window or in back where it is cooler and more quiet. We ordered two margarita. They were very large and tasted good-though a bit strong for me but my husband enjoyed that because he always gets to finish mine! They brought chips and salsa which were really good though the salsa a bit spicy for my hubs. My husband selected entrees of a half chicken with fries. I asked if they had Chile rellenos and they said yes-even though they aren't on the menu. The chicken was amazing-the skin perfectly crispy and fries were pretty good. The chili rellenos were in a light red sauce that was light and delicious. The rellenos were so stuffed with cheese that I took some out (not my favorite) and the chilis were soft and tasty. We ordered flan for dessert. It was a too bit thick for our tastes but that's personal preference. The price was excellent, customer service was good and food was good-the chicken enough to come back! We recommend this for a nice dinner. read more

Was looking for a place for dinner and wanted roasted chicken! This place was very appealing with the chicken roasting right by the window. The ambiance was very family-like, and definitely loved that my tia or abuelita would be working at. Got this chicken cream and rice dish. Didn't know the cream was smothered in the chicken. Was not very impressed. The chicken itself looked like it was boiled with no flavor, so maybe the white sauce to cover. Not impressed. Maybe I'll come back just to ask for the roasted chicken and rice/beans only. Not the boiled, barely cooked, flavorless chicken. read more

It's moist and the sides compliment it well. The portions are a good size and if you're looking for just a snack, I highly recommend sharing a plate. For kids, it's more than enough to share. Searching for a decent bite in Ensenada, but had no internet, so no Yelp Walking up and down the main street we stumbled upon this place. It was one of the few restaurants that didn't have staff outside begging you to eat their establishment. We were seated by the waiter after briefly reviewing their menu. They brought us homemade chips and salsa. We ordered a Mexican combo and a burrito along with a side of guac. My combo came with a cheese enchilada which not good, a chicken flauta since they ran out of tamales which was just okay, and a crispy beef taco which was okay. The burritos were small, more like fajitas. Prices were not too bad. The best thing about this place was they had pretty fast wifi after you order! read more

The architecture and furnishings were just beautiful. I talked to one of the family members who was working there, and he was more than happy to show me around. I wish I was more fluent in Spanish, as I didn't understand all he was saying to me. We only had drinks and chips, with queso. We had already had lunch but couldn't help but stop into see this place. At the start of ordering we had received the pico de Gallo and chips which was so bland. We also ordered the chicken enchiladas with Verdes sauce which was horrible and tasted like candle wax. Chicken flautas was so bland. We asked for additional salsas to spice things up with no success. All the salsas were boring and not flavorful. Hard to believe we were eating At a Mexican restaurant and in Ensenada. The $1 taco stand nearby offer better salsas. With all that we still had planned on paying for all our entrées. But upon exiting we asked for the owner whose name is Teresa to mention to her our experience to which she defended and said we didn't know what we were talking about. Didn't even bother to offer any type of restitution. Just took the money and threw it at the cashier and walked away from us. Very defensive and non caring about her customers/ guest experience. Fantastic! You could not believe if I told you hear how fantastic the food is here and how inexpensive. Beautiful decor, dresses up for Christmas to boot. Two types of salsa and homemade chips were delivered immediately. Mole chicken (their specialty) along with Chili relleno were our choices and they did not disappoint. While walking around the main party strip, this place caught our eye because they were making fresh tortillas and we could see them through the glass windows. The restaurant itself is very authentic and beautiful. Our waiter was super kind and we all were happy with out food. I got the enmoladas Dulces which are enchiladas rolled up of chicken with a sweet(chocolate)/spicy mexican sauce served with rice and beans ! Very delicious ! The Jamaica water was on point. I quit eating chicken after getting really ill in California in 1993. Except when I come here for the chicken mole. Been eating at El Charro since 1991 when it was across the street. I eat mostly healthy food. Chicken is natural and fresh off the rancho. Spongy texture , not rubbery El Charro is one the few restaurants I will order anything off the menu. read more

With so many tourist oriented places in Ensenada its often not easy to find a good restaurant. We were impressed with this one. We've been here several times for lunch. The food is fair to good. The best is the rotisserie chicken and the homemade tortillas. The only thing that bothers me is their very small serving of rice and beans. It must come out to two tablespoons of each on the plate. They shouldn't be so cheap. Hugh restaurant on the main drag. We decided to eat here after seeing the chicken roasting in the window and a lady making fresh tortillas. Two of the kids ordered chilaquiles, which wasn't even on the menu and they thought they were fantastic. Same for my wifes chili rellano. I had the combo with a taco, enchilada and tamale. The tamale was a little weird becasue it was filled with meat, potato and olive. The enchilada and taco were standard street fair. But the margaritas were fantastic. When I walked past El Charro's window, I saw golden, crispy roast chickens turning on rotisseries in front of a large brick-oven fire and knew I wanted to come here on my next visit. I did, and my son and I both had half roast chickens. He ordered his plain and I asked for mole sauce with mine, having read earlier reviews on it. There are two kinds of mole sauce: salty and sweet. My friend ordered the salty and I ordered sweet. Both were good, and I'll probably get the salty version next time, as it had a bit more rustic dark chocolate depth that I imagined in films like Chocolat and Like Water for Chocolate. Two fireplaces and Old Mexico-style dining ambience creates a nice, quiet enclave on a very touristy strip. The handmade tortillas were good and the roast chickens were very tender and juicy - definitely the star of the show - but everything else I tried was regular Mexican fare and underwhelmed: salsa, chips, beans, rice. Hands down THE BEST roasted chicken in town. They slow roast their chickens all day long, and an entire chicken, along with sides and tortillas, cost just $17 and will feed four people. All of the good is fresh, and there are drinks available too. Make a stop here to eat in or take out, and if you're driving there's a free parking lot in back. read more

Last night, we dined at this beautiful authentic restaurant near the popular Papas & Beer. El Charro restaurant is very eye catching from the street with it's large window displaying it's rotisserie chicken. Our waitress had great customer service and offered great menus suggestions for dinner. We asked which mole was the sweetest, as it's my favorite, and our waitress informed us that we can order sweet mole but it's not on the menu. As it turns out, the sweet mole was a total hit at our table. I had the house margarita & it was a great size but was disappointed with the overall taste.
