Found by Yelp, really didn't want Mexican but stopped anyways . I from out of town and like to find more local style restaurants that whole family would eat but I am glad I stopped. Whole family did eat even my I don't like Mexican son. Got there about 6:30 pm on a friday , it was storming they was just about 5-10 minutes wait. Chips was thicker then I like and the salsa was different hard to explain like they grilled it. It was a great pairing. All The food was great. Kids chicken and rice, steak fajita salad and verde pulled burrito. Would stop again when I pass back through town. Staff was super nice and food came out when ready one plate at a time so it was hot, unlike a lot of restaurants that wait on whole table to be ready. read more

Margaritas were good. Service was eh. The food was ok, portions were large but the food lacked any seasoning. It was extremely plain. I would go back for cheese dip, the guacamole dip and the 2 salsa. I really like both salsa a lot. Bar was huge! Place was busy so it must be popular. We started with the Chaparro margaritas (not too sweet or overly boozy) and the George Poppers (must try! - savory, affordable and perfectly spicy app) Combo of house salsas with chips offer a range of fresh to savory flavors and the house made hot hot sauce added the heat we love in our Mexican experience. House special entree "tex" was only above average, but the street corn (they call corn on the cob) was perfectly (temperature) hot with crema, cheese, lime and salt served on the side for you to dress the corn as desired. use it all...Best we've ever had! Service was also notable. The darling boy seemed to anticipate what and when without being asked without "bothering us". Like a five star steakhouse. While I enjoyed the service and the take out queso I purchased to take back to the office for a party, my meal was a total disappointment. I was pleased with the chips and salsa... there was a spicier, slightly chunkier one that was very good. My meal was not good at all. It does take some skill to do poblano peppers correctly and it wasn't there. The peppers were very much over cooked and tasted old, the upgrade to grilled chicken was a costly mistake, and the beans and rice were ho hum. I think there are a couple of other Mexican restaurants to try nearby- I will move on. read more

I regularly come to this restaurant with colleagues and I always enjoy the meal. During the week there are usually a lot of customers, and on Fridays you may have to wait a little while to be served, but in general it's always fast and the staff is very friendly. This is my favorite Mexican restaurant in Covington! For a beer and a dish you pay about 20$, which is reasonable. You have a large parking lot next to the restaurant so it's easy to park. You can also enjoy watching sports on TV, there are many screens available. You can also choose to sit at the bar or at a table in the dining room. I recommend this restaurant, if you want to eat a good meal, served quickly, and not expensive. read more

The first time we tried this restaurant. Noisy and the ambiance is ok-typical strip mall restaurant. The service was excellent. The food was great EXCEPT the one chile relleno I had. It tasted very bad, I brought this to the attention of the server and the manager and they both basically shrugged their shoulders. Apparently this is not normal. If I make rellenos at home I make sure the chilis are not damaged or rotten. This one chili must have had a moldy soft spot but was overcooked and used anyway! There were two on the plate and the other one was ok. If you have a restaurant you have to use ingredients that are exceptional quality. I'm not sure if we will return because of this situation and last night, after about 7 hours and all of today I have been ill with diarrhea! Seriously, be scrupulous in your preparation and with the cleanliness of the kitchen!!!!' Since this was our first time here this has left us with no desire to return. We are from Texas where we have a lot of good Tex Mex spots. This place was awesome! Even during the week on a Thursday night they had the parking lot full. It seems you can call ahead and do a reservation or you can just walk in. Either way there was not a long wait. The dips were great! They had a wide variety of food to choose from, some that we don't even have in Texas. It all was very yummy. The service was great. The inside was nice and kept up. Their cheese and beef is made with ground beef instead of brisket like in Texas and with white cheese. Would go back again!! read more

4 stars for a solid Mexican restaurant. My wife and I were checking out historic downtown Covington recently and were looking to grab some food. Unfortunately, places like Mystic Grill had multi-hour waits, so we decided to think outside the box. I then remembered a fun little Mexican restaurant I had tried back in law school called El Chaparro. Located in a generic shopping plaza on US 278 near the I-20 highway ramps, El Chaparro provides pretty much everyone one would want in a standard Georgia Mexican restaurant experience. We arrived and were able to grab a booth right away. The restaurant has that traditional yellow interior with some cool paintings in a set back style that gives the place a slightly unique flair. Our server came over to take our order soon after we sat down. She wasn't terribly charismatic and we only saw her a handful of times, but that actually works pretty well for me compared to some of the other negative service experiences I've had at other restaurants over the prior year. The work crew did bring out some fresh chips and 2 containers of salsa pretty fast that held us over as we waited for... our large pitcher of skinny margaritas! We planned to play a round of golf after lunch and thought this would be a good way to start. The alcohol content of the pitcher was a little weak, but it was a good size and getting the large (#thankyoupastexperience) provided us with a good margarita experience. We then moved on to ordering. We got George Poppers as an appetizer and I got the pollo relleno as my dish. The food came out in pretty short order. The George Poppers were a little spicy for me (my wife LOVED them), but my pollo relleno was excellent. It was really salty (a plus for me, maybe not for others) and came with some great mango salsa on top as well as plantains and solid french fries on the side. Plus, our entire bill was about $50, which is pretty awesome considering everything we received. Overall, El Chaparro provided us the good and tasty Mexican experience we wanted. While nobody will confuse this spot with somewhere like Superica, it definitely can hit the spot for you when you are in the area and craving some well-priced Mexican food. read more

First of all, this is the first night after the winter storm that hit Atlanta and surrounding areas. Seemed like most of Covington came out to eat. Arrived at 6pm. There were quite a few people waiting to be seated. Fortunately we were seated in about 10 mins in the smaller dining area as you enter. The place was packed and the staff were hustling serving customers. Our waitress was very polite and helpful in making our dinner and drink selections. Within 10 minutes or so we had our meals. Unfortunately we were well into our dinners before our drinks came. Food was plentiful and good. Here's where things go downhill. Being seated in the smaller dining area in front of the door, every time people would come and go, we got blasted by cold air since the outside temperature was 34 degrees. When there were big parties arriving or departing, the door would remain open for long periods of time, i.e. 30 seconds. Several times we had to pull our coats up to stay warm. We must have waited for 30 minutes to get our check. The waitress leaned over the back of the booth where my gf was sitting to hand us the bill instead of walking 2 steps to properly hand it to me. My recommendation if you go here, is to request the MAIN dining area which is away from the front door. The restaurant needs to install a partition that would separate the dining area from the front door. read more

It came with marinated steak, rice, onions, and peppers, pico de gallo, sour cream, and I had beans on the side. I also had a delicious red sangria. For dessert. Me and my sister split the churro. DON'T ORDER THE SPECIAL NACHOS!! This is historically my wife and I's favorite Mexican restaurant in Covington. The service is usually quick and every entree we've ordered has always been great. I guess that's what made this visit so shocking. The restaurant was less busy than almost every other time we've been and it took over 30 mins for our food to come out. That's not really a super long time to wait but it took another 10 mins for my wife's "nachos" to come out which is pretty confusing when you look at the food we received. I guess it takes extra time to make 8 individual nacho chips vs the El Pasiano Special (cheese enchiladas topped with carnitas, grilled vegetables, queso, etc). It took that long because it had to have been 15-20 mins since the server had last been to our table last so she had no idea my food had been brought to our table and hers had not. So who knows how long it had been sitting there waiting for her to bring it. I think it took 45 mins before I even got the first refill on the Diet Coke I ordered. We ordered the "Special Nachos" and were pretty surprised that they weren't traditional nachos. We assumed that the "Special Nachos" was a special because they had sliced jalapeños and you could choose a protein such as steak or chicken instead of ground beef. I feel like if you are going to have a "special" that deviates that much from the norm, the server should inform the patron to mitigate the potential of disappointment. So either the server was just ignorant of the menu or doesn't care about the patron's experience. I'm assuming it was the latter because when she came back to the table (which was a good 5 to 10 minutes later), she could tell that we were confused by what we received so she asked if everything looked good. We asked if this is how the nachos were typically served and my wife said "she didn't realize that it came with melted cheese instead of queso" because the menu just said cheese for each nachos menu item. The waitress pretty much just told us that what we should have ordered was the "Nachos Mexicanos" instead of the "Special Nachos" which would have been great to know while we were actually ordering but seeing as we've never had nachos like this at any restaurant we've ever been to (except maybe Chilis) we didn't know to even ask that... My wife ate maybe half of the "nachos" because she didn't really like it and it wasn't really what she expected or wanted. So when the waitress came back she saw her plate, asked if she was done, and then stacked everything on top of the plate to take it away. My wife and I aren't the type of people to complain and request a refund because we don't really like to make a big spectacle while we are trying to enjoy a dinner out. We just asked for the check and it took the server over 5 mins to bring the check knowing that we were disappointed with the dining experience. It was very obvious that the waitress felt awkward but made no attempts to remedy the situation or anything. The worst part was this special nachos plate was $15-16 for 8 chips. The picture is after my wife ate one because I was so flabbergasted by this entree we ordered that I had to take a picture. It makes me not want to come back because of this experience and my wife and I come here at least once every week or two. The server was not very attentive to us, the service was slow despite it not being super busy (for them), and bad customer service. We weren't even specifically looking for them to not charge us for the entree but she wasn't empathetic about our confusion and disappointment by the "nachos" we received. When my wife was confused about there not being queso on these nachos, she could have offered to bring a small amount of cheese dip out or something. She just dismissively told us what we should have ordered instead which isn't good service. read more

Wonderful Mexican food. El Charro was a favorite restaurant of my families since the 80's. I got the Texas Fajitas which was a combination of beef, chicken, and shrimp. However, I was able to get just beef and chicken. It comes with grilled peppers and onions. This was enough for at least 2 people. You also get refried beans, guacamole, and lettuce. As an appetizer we got queso as well as the chunky guacamole. Both were delicious, as were their chips. Others at my table order the grilled veggies and one of the combination dinners. Tried this spot out about 3 years ago and I really enjoyed the food. I had the carnitas plate. This evening I wanted a burrito so I was in the area and decided to stop by. I ordered a carne asada burrito to go and I was told they didn't have carne asada, that should have been my first clue that something was amiss. I asked if they had carnitas and she replied "yes" so I ordered a carnitas burrito. When I got home what I had was carnitas wrapped in a flour tortilla..that's it! That is not a burrito!
