I hate to update my reviews, especially when this place was one of our favorites. They have dramatically increased the prices (for example, fajitas went from $18 to $26). They also now charge almost $3 for chip refills and do not provide extra chips if you order queso. My meal was awful today. I took a bite of a moldy pepper in my fajitas. I was really disappointed because this was once one of my favorite meals. Not sure if there was a change in ownership or just rising costs but it's not what it used to be. read more

Love the food & atmosphere. Authentic Mexican food. The biggest drawback is now the portion sizes. I've gotten smaller, but the prices have gone up. The chips and salsa used to be complementary now they cost an additional fee. Also, it took a long time for our food to come out. read more

Came here for lunch around 1pm it was a little busy we got seated in wasn't a wait at all. The food was really good I had the nacho fully loaded and my friend has the fajitas wrap it was tasty and good portion. I think in all place of Mexican restaurant not a lot of them have camphechana seafood and ceviche seafood they all have shrimp ceviche in some restaurants. Service was good. No complaint. The service is always quick and the food is great. I wouldn't call it the best Mexican food at all , but our family keeps coming back and frequent this place often. Depending on your preference el Campesino would either be great or not your cup of tea. If you're looking for fast, inexpensive, American knock-off of Mexican cuisine then this is a great restaurant. They were very fast. My whole dining experience could have been completed in thirty minutes or less. If you're looking for an authentic Mexican restaurant then no, this isn't it. I ordered the beef tacos because I like tacos. One bite the taco shell shattered like broken glass. The second taco didn't last that long because once it was picked up the bottom gave way like one of those taco shell commercials. Just plop! And gone. Everything was rather typical and nothing stood out. The service was the best part. Our waitress was a hummingbird in human form moving incredibly fast and always working. El Campesino is expensive and they give you small portions. Every meal comes with chips and salsa. I ordered cheese sauce to go with it. HUGE MISTAKE. $10.50 for cheese sauce. Had I known it cost that much, I would have never ordered it. That's total insanity and it's easily the most expensive cheese sauce I've ever eaten. And if you want more chips, it's $1.50 extra. I got the combo with one taco, one burrito and one enchilada. All were small, taco bell style portions. I ate all three and was still hungry. The sauce they use is thin and they don't give you a lot of it and they only use white cheese with no cheddar or nacho cheese. This really brings down the flavor. It did not come with Mexican rice, so I had to order that ala carte. It was fine, but nothing special. I will not be going back to El Campesino. Chili's and Emilianos are the same price or cheaper and you won't be leaving hungry. read more

Okay, I wish I had more photos but as you read my reviews, you'll learn I see the food and begin eating. The ceviche, I was expecting a small portion and no flavor. Wrong. Large portion, fresh, and flavorful. I ordered tamales, many places do not sell tamales. So good. I ordered other items including the Mexican sodas. Get the soda!!! If you drink, I didn't try the margarita (next time) but they looked amazing. The food was really good. I enjoyed it and I'll be back. I stopped by with my spouse and some friends before visiting a nearby escape room. The restaurant came highly recommended by them and we enjoyed our food. Seating and service were fast and efficient. Chips were good, though note there is a charge (~$1.50) for each additional basket. Not too much but just a note. Prices also felt somewhat higher ($15-20/plate) outside of combo platters, but food was good quality and very tasty. If you choose a combo platter I would recommend adding on a side after, as I still felt somewhat hungry after eating (came in hungry after a busy day). However, that may be more of a "me" thing, and I would definitely recommend trying this restaurant and would like to return in the future as the food was really very good read more

So disappointing. The chips where thick, not crispy and the salsa was boring. We got the enchilada verdez. They had no flavor. The rice was dry, like it had been sitting around. I grew up going to the Altoona location and was so happy to find out there are several locations throughout the Pittsburgh area. I order the same exact thing every single time I go -- the fajita quesadilla. I can never finish it in one sitting -- it's loaded with steak or chicken, peppers, onions, tomatoes and queso. It's also served with rice, beans, guacamole, sour cream and pico de gallo. The chips and salsa are always fresh and the cheese dip is phenomenal every time. Service is always super quick and, as I said, portions are crazy. It's my go-to when I have a craving for Mexican food. read more

This restaurant sits next to my nail salon so I frequent here after my appt usually. I have tried several dishes from here and I have never been disappointed. The service is always great. I love this place. Went on a Sunday with a party of 3. Music was jamming on the speakers and service was so prompt. Parking is great because it's within a shopping strip. Ample parking for the restaurant. The menu is pretty vast. When you sit down you get free chips and some deee lisshusss salsa. Order the queso dip. It's a great addition to the free chips and salsa. I wanted a cherry Pepsi but they didn't have that, but they were able to make it for me. The server added a bit of grenadine to my Pepsi and voila it was cherry flavored! I also wanted a little alcoholic libation. The Sangria is strong!!! But good like I like it! I ordered the enchiladas rancheras. Loved them. You get 5 different enchiladas with 2beef, 1 chicken, 1 cheese and one filled with beans. The bean and cheese were my favorite ones. My husband got the quesadilla fajita. It's his favorite dish there. There's tons of space in the restaurant. Saw a couple of large parties. The only con about the place are the booths. The seats aren't that comfortable to me. The backs of the booth have very little give..so you have to sit either straight up or lean over your table a bit to be comfortable. A solid 3 star "A-OK" Mexican restaurant. I was craving Mexican food after shopping at Robinson Mall, and the Yelp App led me right to El Campesino. Much like everything else on McKnight Rd, it's nestled in a strip mall, and has ample parking. The decor is pretty standard kitschy Mexican restaurant but nothing that turned me off. The service was helpful, prompt and attentive. I ordered the Hornitos 16oz margarita ($9), and the carnitas dinner ($14). The margarita was tasty: perfect amount of tequila so you don't feel ripped off, and you could tell it wasn't made from bottled margarita mix. The carnitas dinner came with rice, beans, guacamole salad, and tender pork chunks with grilled onions. For me, the carnitas could have been more strongly seasoned and the beans were a little too thick, but the guac had a nice citrus brightness. I mean, it was good, but it didn't wow me. The chips seemed... not stale, but just not light and crispy and fresh. While I loathe chunky salsa, theirs was a little too runny (though the flavor was passable). I was left with the impression that they were maybe gringo-ing everything down a little too much. Looked like they had some pretty decent drink specials for happy hour and when Pittsburgh teams are playing. If I'm in the area, I would stop by again, but I won't be making a special trip from Sq Hill. They accept AMEX. read more
