Let's start with the salsa...if you spicy things- you will like this. I loved the chips that came with it, crispy and tasteful. Real Mexican sodas!! I got the fajitas and let me tell you- 9.2/10 Sizzling hot, with flavorful green/red/orange peppers! The steak had a nice flavor as well. My friend got $2/tacos for their Tuesday special. Then I got some flan for desert.....yummy in my tummy! The wait staff was amazingly friendly- smiling all night and checking in often. It's fairly quiet, but you do sit close to the other tables. This was our first visit and we were so pleased!!! The service and food were OUTSTANDING!! The Owner was so pleasant to talk with , his family has been running this establishment for over 23 years .. we HIGHLY recommend this restaurant if you are in the mood for authentic delicious Mexican food food we got the homemade guacamole and chips and salsa. My husband had the steak fajitas which smelled and tasted amazing. I had the shrimp tacos with beans and rice. We cannot wait to come back. El Cactus is the best restaurant ever. Hometown bias for sure, though I've been going to this restaurant for 15 years. Something to be said when the menu doesn't change over that period of time, and the quality of the food is second to none. The ambiance is comfortable, colorful, and some beautiful local paintings. This is our first visit under new ownership. We always liked the fact that the food was very authentic and well prepared, so we were concerned about the change. First thing we noticed was a refreshed dining room. We were then promptly seated and attended to by two waitstaff who were super friendly. We were offered the complimentary Margaritas (weekend special). We enjoyed homemade chips and fresh pico style salsa while looking at the new menu. I orderd the Envueltos de Mole and my wife the house salad with chicken. Both came the same high caliber authentic food we enjoyed in the past. The mole which can be a risky choice, was spot on. We met the owner, Ivan who also checked in on us several times and was super friendly and hospitable. You can tell he is taking great pride and wanted us to have a great experience. We read the reviews, and perhaps had too high of an expectation. Started with a plate of about 14 chips and 1/4 cup of pico (both of which were good, btw). Very attentive and professional server took our drink order and we ordered appetizer of queso that was apparently made to order and took longer than we expected (and was not exactly worth the wait), again with a small handful of chips (not used to a Mexican joint being stingy on chips). The entrees were well-presented and my steak with sautéed onions and jalapeños was very good but my wife's dish (forgot to get the name) was a bit dry. Dining room was very clean and pleasant (even "cozy"), and service was good. Food was good but wasn't the second coming of Jesus that other reviewers are saying. We're new to the area and not snobs but we'll keep looking. read more

This BYOB's interior is surprisingly cozy, psuedo sand-blasted walls punctuated with Mexican paintings and a hanging sombrero, framed with green neon lights. A charming cactus sits in the back, and Mexican music adds to the mood. Love the complimentary chips and salsa. Their salsa is fresh and tangy, and had enough kick to make me sweat, so I asked for extra for my tacos. Speaking of which, try their tacos "El Cactus" and get the grilled steak ($7.99; credit cards accepted), the meat's moist and pleasing. I like soft flour tortillas, but if you're into hard shells, they have those, too. Bring friends - El Cactus can handle a crowd. First time ordering and likely the last. We have lived in many places throughout the US and have tried all sorts of Mexican (and my wife has had actual Mexican food in Mexico) so we aren't Mexican food noobs. Ordered Fajitas for my ten year old. Here's the description online: Fajita $13.95 Your choice of grilled marinated strips of steak, chicken, or combo. Served with cheese quesadillas, guacamole, pico de gallo, sour cream and flour or corn tortillas. Have you ever had fajitas with no grilled peppers or onions? Wish I could post a picture because what we got was curlicue "steak" with ABSOLUTELY NO FLAVOR other than grey meat. Marinated? With what spice? Warm water? When we got it home, we doctored it up with some flavor. Dud. My wife and I ordered Enchiladas . I asked the person taking our order specifically if we could get a combination of cheese and beef and he asked someone else and the answer was 'yes'. You know how this ends. Both orders were both all beef. Here's the menu description: Enchilada $11.95: Soft folded corn tortillas stuffed with your choice of cheese, shredded chicken or beef. Topped with our hot or mild sauce, sour cream and mexican cheese So beyond not getting the "combo" we asked for, the enchilada also had Verde sauce all over it. We are ok with Verde but no mention of that in the description. I also asked if we could get flour instead of corn tortillas and the answer was no (despite the fact that the fajitas gave the choice). What's with the tortilla rules? Pre-made maybe? hmmmmm... The refried beans were okay, though we expected a thicker version with cheese (like everywhere else in the country). We also ordered guacamole, and we are guac snobs. "Guacamole $4.95+ Daily handmade fresh avocado dip served with nachos." Now, I have had gauc made at my table, bought it in tubs at wholesale clubs and sides at Moe's. We also make our own versions. Never have I had guacamole with at least a third of the volume be chopped tomatoes. If I wanted pico de gallo I would have ordered that. This was an obvious and overt way of thinning out the more expensive avocado for cheaper tomatoes. And it tasted cheap. We wont be back anytime soon. read more

We've eaten here in times past and had always liked it. The pandemic has created a new world for restaurants, however, and I was glad to see this family business has risen to the challenge. We have a Vegan in our house, so when we get takeout, Mexican food isn't compatible for us all. So tonight, taking advantage of a temporary absence of our Vegan, we finally ordered a big dinner from El Cactus. Fantastic! Everything was homemade and delicious, proportions were ample, and it was better than expected. They have tamales and other dishes not all Mexican restaurants bother with. This place is entirely deceiving from the outside. It looks like it would be nothing special, but the food is phenomenal. I have eaten there 5 or 6 times, and had a superb meal each time. One of those visits the service was probably not quite a "five star" level, but the others were all just great. There is a shrimp dish in a chipotle sauce that is actually more like a chipotle bisque... it's AMAZING. So flavorful. They close between lunch and dinner, and that is probably a good thing, because I drive by there before they open up at 5:00 pm. I have eaten at this BYOB many times over the years. Very good authentic Mexican food. The decor is South of the border with lots of browns and oranges and paintings on the walls with simple country Mexican themes. They start you off with complimentary chips and salsa that is very fresh tasting. There are a lot of choices on the menu for such a small place. The food usually comes out very quickly and I've always been pleased with the food. The portions are generous and I don't think I ever haven't left with a doggie bag. Service has usually been very friendly and efficient. My only complaints are that the service has been a little spotty at times and the last time we were here they had a sign stating that they had complimentary sangrias but when I asked for one the server said they didn't have any??? We were there early and the place wasn't packed so I don't think they ran out. Pet peeve of mine, don't advertise something you don't have. Be warned that the place is very small for a sit down restaurant and it can get crowded at prime dinner time on the weekend. With so few Mexican options around El Cactus is a great little place. read more

Wanted to try another local Mexican food place and based on reviews it seemed middle of the road. I'm from California so I know what good Mexican food should taste like and this place doesn't make the cut. The burrito was tiny and missing the ingredients that you would except to be inside of the burrito like rice, had to add it myself. The rice was lacking as much flavor as I except from rice at a restaurant. They gave me a crazy amount of Salsa wished I got more chips but overall it's not the worst but not the best either. So much did I want to like El Cactus. The place is cute and the service is very friendly. Unfortunately, the food was not all that great. The combination platters my wife and I selected looked great when they came out. The food wasn't bad, I just felt like the I could have made us a tastier Mexican dinner at home myself. This little place has some great, authentic Mexican food. It's a little on the pricier side (only reason I docked it a star) but I wouldn't go so far as to call it "expensive." And the quality of the food is worth it, IMO. My wife and I are still returning and trying to get ourselves to try more dishes, but it's hard to stay away from the excellent chimichanga.
