So, I've been to this place 3 times for lunch. The lady at the register is really rude, no customer service at all. There was an issue with my order the very last time I went, and she totally caught an attitude with me and it wasn't my fault. She had no accountability. Now the food. The chicken tacos are okay, I only go here on lunch when I'm working so they are decent in a crunch! But the steak tacos, I got millions of little crunchy burnt pieces of meat for my steak taco! It's been three years since I started coming here and I STILL love this place. Authentic Mexican food, fast service, and open late night. The pulled chicken tacos are seasoned well and always tender. The red and green sauces are made fresh and very good. And unlike most places, they don't skimp on the cilantro either. The owner is REALLY friendly too and keeps this place run well. My first visit - the burrito was quite good. Got it to go and enjoyed. Subsequently, I went back for lunch to dine in with my husband the next day and the burrito was so salty, and greasy as hell! More importantly, I noticed that when I tried to compliment them on my first visit, making small talk and being friendly; which is my nature, there was ZERO, ZILCH NADA interaction from the employees. I should've prefaced this by saying I'm white, yanno...CAUCASIAN?!? When patrons of color or Hispanics came in, there were abundant smiles and a difference in customer service. Listening and being knowledgeable are huge parts of working in customer service. Came here and ask what was in the veggie fajita burrito and was (cashier had to ask the cooks what was in basically everything) told everything on a regular burrito but with fajita veggie with carrots and jalapeño. I asked what was in the avocado "egg rolls" and was told cheese, avocado and cilantro. I order said fajita burrito(no meat or sour cream, add cilantro, the carrots and jalapeños) as a dinner, the avocado "egg rolls", and a shrimp fajita dinner (add cilantro) and limes on the side. I repeated the ordered. $31 worth of food.. (expensive for 2 dinners and a side). I get home.. the burrito is ridiculously small. Oh.. there was no lettuce, tomato, cilantro,rice or beans in it. The "egg rolls" were only filled with guacamole and came with a side of nacho cheese (those don't even go together‍). Fajita dinner was the fajita lunch portion and no cilantro or limes. I feel completely ripped off, lied to and I'm still hungry. Won't go here again. read more

Stopped here because our tesla was charging close by on our trip from Chicago to Cincinnati. The yelp reviews of all the surrounding restaurants were iffy except for El Burrito Rey. We walked in and told the person behind the counter that it was our first time. He took the time to explain the menu and the favorites. He showed the type of care that an owner would but when I asked he told me he was the manager. I would definitely want this person working for my business. The food came quickly and was presented well. This is authentic and made to order. You can see the cook behind the counter preparing all the food. The chicken is FRESH and REAL and marinated properly. It is shredded breast meat that is moist. The beef was also well prepared. The shrimp was perfectly cooked and melted in your mouth. Too many people tend to overcook shrimp turning it chewy. The service was as friendly as it gets. When we received our drinks we were told it was free refills. The food was presented as it was cooked. We ordered a lot of food between the four of us so the manager brought out the food that was ready after we started eating. Just a cool vibe from this place. This will be our go to from now on on our Chicago road trips!!! Side notes: Food is presented with two sauces, a green mild and a hotter red. Both are flavorful and not over the top. read more

What I was expecting were fajita veggies cooked and got a medley of what reminded me of frozen veggies thrown in a burrito. Also it was wrapped badly, no rice or beans, and just a mess. Terrible customer service. The older lady at the register always has an attitude and is rude. I used to live in Markham and remembered their food was decent. Now I live over 10 miles from this place and decided to take the trip. I went over my order with the lady four times to ensure it was correct and got all the way home to find my chimichanga had chicken instead of steak . Upon traveling all the way back to the restaurant, said owner Mike only offered a refund and 10% off my next order ($2 off which In coming to Yelp I find out is pretty much offered to everyone) or to just remake the food. The surf and turf burrito is the perfect combination of steak, amazingly cooked shrimp, and fresh tomatoes, onions, and lettuce, sour cream, and cheese. This is a new place and I wanted to try and support local spots. I had steak tacos, tongue (lengua) tacos and steak sopes. I loved the tongue tacos, but the steak is not very good. I am not sure what cut of beef they use but is was not what appealing or tasty. The sope also had some problems. The dough they use for the sope was just bland and seemed to just serve to take up space in your stomach. I will go back when I have a taste for the Lengua tacos (very good) and will probably try some other items on the menu, but for now, I will stay away from the steak and sopes. read more

I usually drive to Pilsen or Little Village for my burritos and tacos. This is the first place on the south side that is flavorfully seasoned and cooked properly. I can't wait to come back. This place was just okay for me. I got a chicken taco, chicken burrito, Mexican corn and horchata. The chicken was a bit salty. The Mexican corn was not good (to me). That was the first time I've had Mexican corn so I don't have anything to compare it to. The horchata was the best thing about the meal for us.
