I am from San Diego, CA. I am out here in Hampton due to military obligations. Yes, I have been to Mexico and eaten some of the delicious, authentic Mexican food ever! Been going to Plaza Azteca for years and all those times have given me the impression that Mexican food was just meh. My wife and I decided to try this place and they've completely turned me around. El Azteca actually season their food. We've been here more than five times and it was no fluke. Every order we've had has been so good and flavorful. The prices are okay and the food is so-so. I ordered three dishes a la carte and the waiter forgot one of them. Their salsa was great, but the rest was mediocre. The quesadilla was literally a tortilla with cheese in it and came with nothing else. The tamale was a mixture of ground and shredded beef with beans as if they couldn't be bothered to make a proper tamale so they just stuffed it with random bits of fillings for other dishes. The enchilada was okay but you could do better yourself at home. The servers appeared rushed, even though there weren't a lot of customers, and made one feel like they could not possibly get away from your table fast enough. The portions are massive! But sadly the steak was dry and tough, the salsa and tamales are heavy in salt. The rest was delicious though so it could be one of the cooks has a heavy hand with the salt. I was in town visiting for the day and stumbled across this restaurant. The service was a bit slow because it was a pretty busy Sunday afternoon. Nonetheless, the food was delicious! I had a potato burrito and a bean burrito. My husband had a vegetarian fajita platter that included a guacamole salad. All of the food was delicious! We were served chips with salsa and a spicy white sauce. I wasn't expecting that sauce to be spicy and be that good. Authentic Mexican food is what you'll get here. I'm not a meat eater so I can't speak about any of the meat dishes, but I think that the fact that the restaurant was really busy suggests that their food is authentically Mexican and authentically delicious. The carne asada tacos remind me of taco places back home in Phoenix, though still not on par with an authentic LA taco truck (delish). We came here last week to order takeout. I got the vegetarian #9, a potato burrito and mushroom quesadilla with rice and guacamole salad. My boyfriend got the Super Azteca. Unfortunately, our order was missing my mushroom quesadilla and his chalupa. We didn't call or go back for it though. We realized this when we had gotten home and were just too hungry to deal with it at this point in our evening. In the future, I would make a point to check our food before paying and leaving. Regardless, the food was delicious and authentic and we did truly enjoy our dinner and the chips and salsa. I wish we had gone back for the food missing from our order, but oh well. I decided to try out El Azteca after passing this place 20 times a week on my way to my other PTC favorites. There was nothing extraordinary that jumped off the menu. They served their customary tortilla chips with a creamy ranch sauce and salsa for dipping. When it comes to Mexican food, I'm predictable. I always search out the chicken chimichangas. They had a smaller lunch portion and a dinner portion with 2 chimichangas. My internal fat boy was working this morning so I opted for the dinner portion. I asked for the fried, but I think I may have received soft. Either way, the food was pretty good. My only knock on this place is that they did not offer both beans and rice with your meal. I had to pick between the two. I picked decried beans and my meal came with shredded lettuce, sour cream and Guacamole. Not a bad meal except for them not offering rice with the meal. I understand that this area of Virginia is a wasteland for decent Mexican food, but my hotel (I'm in town for the week for work) recommended this place and Mexican is probably my favorite cuisine, so I decided to give it a shot. Oops. The servers were friendly and relaxed, if inattentive. I had to flag one down to refill my water, and nobody ever stopped by my table during the meal to ask me how the food was. Speaking of which... I ordered the Steak Azteca, a thin slice of ribeye cooked with onions, peppers, and mushrooms. The steak was hammered, past well-done, and under-seasoned. The veggies were also under-seasoned, and very greasy to boot. The tortillas were obviously straight out of a bag, and the margarita was sickly sweet. It's not that the food tasted bad... it really just didn't taste like much at all. The one exception was the beans. Surprisingly, the refried beans (though probably out of a can) were well-seasoned and pretty tasty. I didn't walk into the restaurant with high expectations. I knew this wouldn't be good So-Cal taqueria Mexican. I just wanted a cheap, relaxed, mediocre Mexican dinner, and I was still very disappointed. read more

Best Mexican I've had in Virginia. I grew up... Let's just say a lot closer to Mexico and in the towns in my home state, good Mexican food is sometimes the only decent restaurant in town. I've had a lot of Mexican dining in my life. This place has what I'm familiar with and it's prepared well. Food is always hot and tasty. Unlike the larger competing Mexican restaurant in town, the food actually has flavor. I'm not a huge spicy-hot person, but I like my Mexican food to have good flavor and theirs does. Their salsa is clearly homemade and delicious. I love their cheese dip; it has the perfect amount of heat. We usually order from the combination numbers. My friend is a vegetarian and really likes this place too, so they apparently have at least some good vegetarian options. The service here is pretty nice. They aren't going to chat it up with you maybe (although the manager is always very friendly) but they're quick and check on us regularly. We're regulars here so maybe they treat us well for that reason. But they earned it. We wouldn't come back if the service was bad. On top of all that, they've done some remodeling including new booths and knocking down a wall that makes the place feel fresh. We loved it before, but it's nice to see them investing in their business for their customers. Overall: food is delicious and people are good, and the value for your money can't be beat. So I just ate here last night and I LOVED it! I got enchiladas, and They were scrumptious. Nothing compares to the enchiladas I had In Puerto Rico, But I gave it four stars. Lastly I had to give an extra star, because I ordered a delicious Margarita that tasted like juice, next thing I knew I was saying random shit at the table. The margarita was strong, and it only took one. Our waiter didn't understand English much, but who cares, she even got my husbands drink wrong.
