I had an excellent dinner here with a friend! When we saw how busy it was, we knew we were in for a good meal! They have a large inside seating area that gets a little loud. We sat outside on the patio, which is spread out and much quieter. Some place in the DMV charge for chips and salsa (which I hate), so I was very happy that they had included chips with a delicious and light house made salsa. We both ordered a combination platter and were pleased with our dishes. They definitely qualify as Tex mex, with generous sides of beans and rice. I ordered the "Steak A La Salvadorena" and while the steak itself was tasty, moist, and tender, I did have a few issues with the order. First off, they got my order slightly wrong. I wanted to sub the salad for a side of fries. When the food came, and I will say it was a pretty long wait time, a little under an hour, I pointed it out to the waitress and she had no problem bringing me the fries while letting me keep the salad. The salad itself was a bit plain, but it had a fresh, crisp taste to it which paired nicely with the heavy steak, so I can't complain too much. The rice and beans are classic, nothing that's going to blow you away, but still good and exactly what you'd expect. Outside of the food, I found the location pleasant. Trying to find the entrance was a bit more difficult than I would've liked since it's on the side of Georgia Avenue, but once you get inside, the tables and seating were nice. There were also a couple TVs in the back playing a live soccer match, which was a nice touch even if you can't hear much of it. The steak fajitas are the best! We order it medium. It is tender and always tastes fresh. The food is authentic. Service is solid. They get busy. We go about once a month. It was a bowl half completely full of sour cream. Like probably a full container of sour cream was emptied into that bowl. It was absurd. Anyway. I could go on and on. The menu has great choices and the staff are all friendly and attentive but honestly, the food is just mediocre. Tonight I ordered beef Tacos and they were literally just cut steak rolled in a tortilla, no sauce, no cheese. They did give me a very small side plate of pico, sour cream and a dollop of guacamole. From "soup to nuts" - the service, the ambiance, and the location (close to me - less than 4 miles), are perfection! The meals are authentic - tasty, served in copious amounts (GREAT portions), and I love their Margaritas! The menu is hefty, and my goal is to have EVERYTHING they offer - a serious bucket list item, people. Not joking! One of my absolute favorite foods is Chile Relleno.I fell in love with this dish when I lived in Los Angeles - it was authentic and so delicious! And for over 40 years, I was in search of the BEST in the US. I found it here in Maryland! Surprisingly, it's not an entree. It's a side dish!!!! I am begging the powers that be to please elevate this perfectly cooked and extremely satisfying staple (a delicacy for me) to the main menu, with the customary beans & rice, and maybe pair it with a choice of tacos (corn or flour tortilla)! El Aguila has either been a delight or a disaster based on which time we've gone. Sometimes the portions feel very skimpy, and pricey- usually 20% higher than other Mexican restaurants. This time the portions were wonderful, but the service was just terrible. But the thing that really made me give it only the stars is that they charge for refills on drinks like ice tea and Coke. So as long as you know they charge four dollars per drink and they're going to charge you for a refill, you'll be fine. But be prepared because it comes as a bit of a shock at the end of the evening. It's the only restaurant I know that's doing this. And that's why we're probably not gonna go back for a long time. There are other good Mexican restaurants in the area. I really can't complain about the food here, though. The food is great. As long as they keep the portions large like they had last night, I sure can't complain about that either. read more
